Pyongyang, April 13 (KCNA) -- The DPRK launched its first application satellite Kwangmyongsong-3 at the Sohae Satellite Launching Station in Cholsan County, North Phyongan Province at 07:38:55 a.m. on Friday.

The earth observation satellite failed to enter its preset orbit.

Scientists, technicians and experts are now looking into the cause of the failure.

Kim Jong Un didn't mention the failed launch at all in his recent public speech. It's interesting, though, because his father only gave one public speech ever.

He's at least creative in his executions:

Kim Chol, vice minister of the army, was taken into custody earlier this year on the orders of Kim Jong-un, who assumed the leadership after the death of his father in December.

On the orders of Kim Jong-un to leave "no trace of him behind, down to his hair," according to South Korean media, Kim Chol was forced to stand on a spot that had been zeroed in for a mortar round and "obliterated."

The execution of Kim Chol is just one example of a purge of members of the North Korean military or party who threatened the fledgling regime of Kim Jong-un.

So far this year, 14 senior officials have fallen victim to the purges, according to intelligence data provided to Yoon Sang-hyun, a member of the South Korean Foreign Affairs, Trade and Unification Committee. Those that have fallen from favour include Ri Yong-ho, the head of the army and Ri Kwang-gon, the governor of the North Korean central bank.

Other officials have been executed by firing squads, including Ryu Kyong, a senior intelligence expert.

Since being elevated to second-in-command of the nation by his father in September 2010, Kim has reportedly been behind the dismissal of at least 31 senior officials.

The National Defense Commission, headed by the country's young leader, Kim Jong Un, denounced Tuesday's U.N. Security Council resolution condemning North Korea's long-range rocket launch in December as a banned missile activity and expanding sanctions against the regime. The commission reaffirmed in its declaration that the launch was a peaceful bid to send a satellite into space, but also clearly indicated the country's rocket launches have a military purpose: to strike and attack the United States.

Help me out here guys:

Someone here at OO linked a video documentary done in North Korea where a couple guys went undercover and shot a ton of footage inside the country. It featured highways that were totally vacant and outposts that never saw anyone traveling, etc.

Anyone remember this? Can you link it to me? I was trying to tell someone about it and can't find it.

Netflix used to stream all these. I went on a "Shane Marathon" one weekend with a few friends. My favorites were this one and the African trip. I really wish he would do more of these for Vice.

Thanks guys. I was trying to describe this to a coworker and instead just sent her the link. She brought up how crazy NK is after the news stories yesterday, and so I thought she'd be interested in those behind the scenes videos. Most of us think they are crazy, but most people have no clue how bizzare that society really is.

That guy had balls of steel to go into that country and do that. You can see in his face that he's terrified almost the entire time. He easily could have gotten tossed in a jail for the rest of his life.
