The judge has already set the precedent that he believes financial penalties to be patently worthless in this situation.

God is thicker than water.
Kentucky county clerk Kim Davis says she has refused to issue marriage licenses to her friends in same-sex relationships, explaining that even friendship couldn’t convince her to change her stance.
Part of her interview that will appear on The View.

"Some of my best friends..."

But the issue isn't whether she's cool with her gay friends getting married or not, it's whether she's fit to hold an office in which she refuses to do her job. Anyone she refused to give licenses to, friends or not, are just further examples that she can't/won't execute the duties of her office.

I am speechless:
“If I resign, I lose my voice. Why should I have to quit a job that I love, that I’m good at?” Davis said. “I’ve been a county employee and served the public well for over 26 years before I got elected.”

She added, “It just comes back to, you know, they can accommodate for all sorts of other issues, and we ask for one simple accommodation and we cannot receive it. I mean, it just doesn’t seem right.”
Maybe next year, maybe no go

One simple accommodation.

“So you have millions of Christians who object to this whole same-sex marriage issue,” Davis said. “Are their rights invalid? Are their rights not worth anything?
Hold the phone. Are they forcing these poor Christians into same-sex marriages?

Well, in Massachusetts they have already made same-sex marriage mandatory.

We should have had a pool. Or a poll.
Kim Davis, the Kentucky county clerk who was jailed after refusing to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples, has officially changed her party registration to the Republican Party.
...
But Davis added that, even if she is now registered as a Republican voter, the idea that she may campaign for GOP candidates remains "kind of far-fetched."
It's almost as if people are the problem.

Davis wins the "Cost of Discipleship" award..
Kim Davis, the Kentucky county clerk who became a hero to conservatives after refusing to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples, was compared to Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks as she was awarded a prize by a prominent Christian organization Friday evening.

“Whether it was Abraham Lincoln asserting the Constitutionally unsettled nature of the Dred Scott decision; Rosa Parks refusing to sit at the back of a public bus or Martin Luther King risking the … call of police dogs to end legal segregation,” Perkins said, “our nation has been ennobled and enriched by historic citizens who declare their unwillingness to accept rulings and statutes that conflict with the laws of nature and with nature’s God.”

So, Kim Davis' lawyer is saying that the Pope met with her in secret in Washington (inside the Vatican embassy) and urged her to "stay strong." The Vatican has said that it won't confirm or deny the meeting.

I was just reading about this myself.

This could be as true as the picture posted of a prayer vigil in Peru in support of Davis. Said picture was eventually proven false.

The pope did publicly say that government officials have a right to not perform same sex marriage. I'm assuming his meaning is that that includes not getting sacked for it.

And when a woman wants to be a priest within the Catholic church, she should just do it. If a Catholic priest wishes to perform a wedding ceremony for a gay couple, ditto. The Pope has already approved any attempt to adhere to one's religious convictions, even if it goes against the wishes of the employee. It's a new day, folks!

Personally, I think the Pope did meet with Davis...but not to praise her actions. He actually put in a bid for husband number 5 if this whole pope gig doesn't work out.

His argument, IIUC, is that of conscientious objection, that people shouldn't be compelled to do something against their beliefs. Not that you can are allowed to do what you want because of your convictions.

And there are people who feel that the church denying the sanctity of marriage to gay couples is against their belief in what the church should stand for. They practice a form of conscientious objection by performing these ceremonies.

Sadly, he did say that. As the leader of a theocratic state, he perhaps doesn't really understand how Constitutional rights work. Oh well, his batting average is still very high for a pontiff.

Which is completely reasonable. However, if your job is to issue licenses to people, you can't object to issuing licenses to people you don't like. You don't get to conscientiously object to a core function of your job and keep it, particularly when that objection denies other people their Constitutional rights. Just like you can't be a soldier and conscientiously object to shooting at people.

Actually, that can and has been done -- conscientious objectors have served as battlefield medics. That being said, Kim Davis is no Desmond Doss.
