He has a helmet, wearing clothing prepped for armor, and that banana peel is clearly a deadly weapon. I hope he's arrested before he kills someone.

I'm not the angry racist they all see. Yes, he really did say that. Along with this gem:
Cvjetanovic added: “As a white nationalist, I care for all people. We all deserve a future for our children and for our culture. White nationalists aren’t all hateful; we just want to preserve what we have.”

This pretty much sums up Trump's comments yesterday.

You know, when you run into a Nazi in the morning you ran into a Nazi. When you're holding a tiki torch with a group of them and shouting the occasional Sieg Heil then maybe you're the Nazi.

I don't follow the specifics. Do they really say they want to kill black people and is the other side really just standing around quietly saying they want to live?

Maybe the part that employs obvious hyperbole as a rhetorical device?

The statue is located near a quiet residential street, near a bus stop and abandoned businesses.

One business, the now shuttered Lincoln Gas Station, was once owned by Phil Blomquist, who had the statue erected in 1926, city historian Tim Samuelson said. The gas station was named after the street it was on, Lincoln

Yup. That's a statue of Frank Rizzo, who as Philadelphia's Police Commissioner and then Mayor in the 1960s and 70s did everything he could to encourage police brutality, homophobia, and political race-baiting. He had no civic virtues of which I'm aware. He was basically Joe Arpaio when a Joe Arpaio was still untouchable, but he controlled the nation's fourth-largest city.

That statue is probably coming down soon. Are you a fan?

Oh, and he was 1960s Democrat if you want to run with that. Go man go!

Be honest: if you're not from Philadelphia, had you even heard of Frank Rizzo before his statue became controversial yesterday and today?

The statue was funded by a private group composed of Rizzo's friends and political allies--it wasn't some kind of organic outgrowth of popular validation.

Ceremonial statues are a very interesting genre of art, but like all art, they reflect other conditions. They are not history in and by themselves. Instead, they indicate who is in a position to commission official statues, and they record how and what those people chose to celebrate.

Thanks! Very interesting video.

I still have my parents' 1950's high-school Mississippi history textbook. Its account of slavery makes it sound like a positive good. The War of the Rebellion was noble, and the KKK were about keeping law & order and resisting carpetbagger misrule.

This was taught in school.
