It's kind of interesting to think what the reaction to this would be if you swapped out all the angry white dudes with minorities. The level of open carry happening seems to be far greater than what the Black Panthers did in CA back in the 60s. I have to believe people would be losing their minds if the equivalent occurred today, more so than they did back then.

Anyone asking them why MLK day? That's the question I haven't heard. Most of what l I've seen from there are very angry white guys airing out random non focused grievances.

BTW this is allegedly from pre-Richmond militia-run event last night. The 2nd is the one to watch for it's fun anarchist/fascist content. I'm pretty sure corrupt = non-MAGA to these folks.

It's a state Capitol, not federal. But at any rate, the governor requested that non-essential staff stay home due to the rally so that makes me think they were otherwise supposed to work today. Which is surprising.

They appear to be have legislative sessions scheduled. Meaning that while many employees are off, it seems that some legislators at least are there to "protest to."

NPR was doing a bit on this and it seemed pretty clear that a lot of these protesters were coming in from other states. Their biggest concern seemed to be that Democrats were going to come in and steal their guns. The Democrats were going to take over. Some swear they'll die to defend their right to bear arms. The state legislature has no reason to care what out-of-state protesters think.

The legislation is for stronger backround checks, banning high capacity magazines, and giving police the option to take gun away from people deemed a hazard to themselves or others. The Democrats want these things, and it's a slippery slope!

The problem with the logic is that the Democrats are being elected by the People; they're not sneaking into town at night and stealing the elections. The People want this. If it leaks into other states, it's because people are tired of mass shootings and other gun crime.

The NRA and Trump whipped up a conspiracy theory about guns being snatched from the hands of legal gun owners, when the truth of the matter is not one of the Virginia Democrats’ proposed gun laws has been found to be unconstitutional by the US supreme court, and most of them have been repeatedly upheld by federal courts as consistent with the second amendment. But as we know, facts are not to be trusted in the Trumper world.

Those are the items that passed in the Senate. There is also pending legislation making its way through that has some much stricter restrictions on things like ranges and training. I think the initial intent, before it got flooded by .50 BMG wielding donut warriors, was to protest pending and passed laws.

As for in-state support, see sanctuary counties in VA.

They discussed that briefly - with some Sheriff talking about being willing to deputize thousands of citizens to skirt around the laws.

Exactly. It probably won't hold up to state law but they're doing it which means it's not all out-of-state pressure. Also gun sales in VA are at 30-year highs due to the legislation. That's a lot of grandfathered AR-15s in VA.

I didn't have the patience to listen to all 60 minutes of it to find that moment.

Some things I got from this - he got a crowd cheering for the death of someone in ISIS. He accused Democrats of standing for "crime, corruption, and chaos" and the crowd cheered. So really, he's just bringing out the best in people.
