I thought the change of use midstream was strange. I also thought it strange to graph with 0 at the top. The whole things feels intentionally disorienting. All in all it leaves me not making anything of the study.
And arbitrary endpoints are arbitrary. Show it per capita over a longer time frame with standard deviations and you might be able to make some sense if there is a difference before and after the law.

The issue with the graph, and why it's worth discussing, isn't really about its content. It's that the y-axis has been inverted so that a downward line actually represents an increase in gun deaths/murders/whatever.

Of course, these other questionable items raised further demonstrate what a poorly designed graphic it is.

I'm not going to get into another "misleading graph" argument. I'm just not.
It's almost as if people are the problem.

It's murders. Here are the numbers per 100,000 population (I'm not going to put them into a graph). I don't know statistics well, but I don't think standard deviation applies here, since these are concrete numbers, not estimates or averages.

Source (which goes back to the 70s if you want to see a longer time frame).

Code: Select all

1991	9.7
1992	8.9
1993	8.7
1994	8.3
1995	7.3
1996	7.5

I don't find it misleading at all. But then I look at graphs all day long and always take time to figure out what I'm looking at. I could see it messing up someone doing a drive by interpretation, but that's really on them.

Thanks. Yeah, standard deviation was wrong - this is better looked at in an Individual/Moving Range chart. From that, we see that the Moving Range chart is in control. The per capital death rate also shows a steady decline from 1991-2005 and then a slight tick up in 2006 but in decline since then. There's no statistical difference from 1997 through 2013. Fun.

They also refer to homicides which makes it even more confusing.

gun deaths != homicides != murders

Three terms with different meanings.

Not even touching on the issue that an increase in justifiable homicides might increase just because crooks get killed in situation they may have previously escaped from without harm and murders may increase because criminals that would have offended and escaped murdered someone confronting them who is armed.

That's the replacement for Corbet, yes? I know he was often on Stewart's show.

If an animated .gif can be that funny, I might have to stop by and see how the show itself is doing.

He was part of the Daily Show before getting his own show on HBO. See his YouTube channel for some clips. He has essentially taken the Daily Show to HBO except doing it once a week.

I knew W. was going to find a way to get around the two term limit thing! A little nip and tuck, some skin colorization, and BAM! Bush is now Obama.

That might actually explain a few things . . . .

Zarathud: The sad thing is that Barak Obama is a very intelligent and articulate person, even when you disagree with his views it's clear that he's very thoughtful. I would have loved to see Obama in a real debate.

Your point? The writer didn't claim to have invited the idea of redlining an article.
