And people that use the phrase "Lighten up, Francis". Get it? I wasn't talking about the author of the article. :)
And in banks across the world
Christians, Moslems, Hindus, Jews
And every other race, creed, colour, tint or hue
Get down on their knees and pray
The raccoon and the groundhog neatly
Make up bags of change
But the monkey in the corner
Well he's slowly drifting out of range

No, I don't; given Maajid Nawaz, whom I was quoting, resides in Europe and speaks with a thoroughly British accent, what did you find so egregiously offensive about his usage of the term "leftist" that it warranted your response? I understand it typically has a more derogatory connotation here in the US, which was why I provided the additional context. You also refer to "the author of the article" above, which only reinforces my initial impression that you hadn't watched the linked video, and instead took what was quoted from it completely out of context (because, within the context of the video, it's abundantly clear he was not using the term as some sort of derogatory brickbat).

If you want gun violence to drop to near zero, you just have to disarm democrats and their supporters in the hell hole cities that they've created. But y'all can't handle the truth.

Obama telling the FBI to lay off Islamic radicals probably doesn't help much. In fact it should be treason.

Someone is now claiming to have had a FWB relationship with the killer and claims the rampage was aimed at specifically at gay Latino men.
Miguel,” who said he first met Mateen on gay dating app Grindr, told Univision that he thinks the attack was primarily an act of “revenge” rather than terrorism. He said he believed Mateen was upset by Puerto Rican men who had rejected him and outraged to learn that one Puerto Rican man he slept with was HIV positive.

"He hate gay Puerto Ricans for all the stuff he did to him," he said. "I believe this crazy horrible thing he did was for revenge."

He said his “friends with benefits" relationship with Mateen lasted two months and involved 15 to 20 meetings at an Orlando hotel.
That's pretty interesting, as someone in the comments of the linked article said it seems like there was a report that when the killer asked someone trapped in the bathroom if they were black and the killer then said he didn't have anything against black folks. Did anyone else see that? I didn't, but it certainly adds another angle if true.

I read that in Time. It was reported by a woman named Patience Carter, who fled early, but went back into the club with a friend to find a third friend who wasn't with them.
At one point Carter heard him ask, "Are there any black people in here?" When a man responded, Mateen said, "I don't have a problem with black people. This is about my country. You guys suffered enough."
BTW, Carter ended up getting shot in both legs, but she lived. The third friend they went after survived, but the friend who went back in with Carter was killed.

Thanks much for the info. Also, to slightly modify my comments above it looks like he liked Latinos but specifically didn't like Puerto Ricans.

I'm curious why we can blanket statement gun toting citizens, but not Islam.

I would say neither is wise.

I actually fully agree with that, and I don't believe in lumping together all pro gun folks. The inane bumper sticker level arguments like the one I was responding to just enrage me, and I post back in a less than optimal way.

Despite numerous allegations that Orlando shooter Omar Mateen was secretly gay, FBI investigators have announced that the rumors are false. Authorities say there is absolutely no proof that any of the accusations are true.

Didn't get a chance to read your article yet, but did it refute the details of this article?

There are claims that the shooter was seen entering and exiting a hotel/motel with the witness as well.

edit: It did, sort of. Interesting.

Yes
While an unidentified man recently appeared on Univision claiming to have hooked up with the shooter repeatedly and that the motive for the attack was revenge on Latino gay men who had “used” him, authorities say the allegation is false. While the story was picked up by numerous LGBT news outlets, LGBTQNation editors decided not to run the piece because there were too many red flags that it was fake.

The Los Angeles Times reports that FBI officials say there are no photographs, text messages, smartphone apps, or gay pornography among Mateen’s belongings and cell-tower location data does not corroborate any of the allegations made by numerous gay men in the area.

I'm working through the episode, but I wanted to point out a mistake they made when talking about gun control. Florida is not an open carry state. In fact, the state is arguing in front of the FL Supreme Court that FL should not be an open carry state, specifically because concealed carry permits are so easy to get. And taking it one step further, even with a concealed carry permit, you are not allowed to bring a gun into a bar.

Pastor who said Pulse victims got ‘what they deserved’ arrested for allegedly molesting boy at church
Georgia pastor who said Pulse nightclub shooting victims got what they deserved has been arrested on child molestation charges.

Ken Adkins, of St. Simons Island, turned himself in to police about 9 a.m. Friday on aggravated child molestation charges, reported The Florida Time-Union.

The 56-year-old Adkins, who has congregations in Atlanta, Jacksonville and Brunswick, Georgia, is an outspoken anti-LGBT activist in the Jacksonville area.

He drew widespread condemnation for making offensive remarks about a fatal shooting that left 49 clubgoers dead and 53 others wounded at a gay nightclub in Orlando.

Speaking of acts of hatred perpetrated on the homosexual community at one of their night clubs, a dude in his 60's was arrested in Australia for trying to put hydrochloric acid into a lube dispenser (geez guys, get a room. A less publicly accessible one anyway) at an Australian gay club.

They caught him because the device had an alarm because of other, similar incidents.

At work. Feel free to ask google for details.

If the allegations against the pastor are true, then this is a prime example of why homophobia is so damn awful. A culture that teaches people that homosexuals are less than human will most likely cause those who are gay within that culture to grow up hating themselves. The end result is a vehement denial of their true selves that can manifest itself in some very ugly ways.

Lawsuit
Now, the families of some of the victims are suing Google, Twitter and Facebook, arguing that the tech companies had a role in radicalizing the shooter.

The families are accusing the companies of providing support to the Islamic State, the terrorist organization that appeared to inspire the attack.
...
Through their data-driven business models, companies such as Google, Twitter and Facebook even “profit from ISIS postings through advertising revenue,” according to the lawsuit, which was filed in a Michigan federal court Monday and was first reported by Fox News. The families of Tevin Eugene Crosby, Juan Guerrero and Javier Jorge-Reyes are demanding a trial and unspecified monetary compensation.

“Without … Twitter, Facebook, and Google (YouTube), the explosive growth of ISIS over the last few years into the most feared terrorist group in the world would not have been possible,” the lawsuit reads.

The suit is not the first to target tech companies over ISIS's influence. In a pair of separate court proceedings earlier this year, the families of people killed in the 2015 Paris attacks and in an incident in Jordan accused Twitter of providing material support to the terrorist group. In both cases, Twitter argued that it could not be sued because it was simply acting as a conduit for online speech, rather than a speaker for ISIS itself. The judge in the case about the Jordanian incident appeared to side with Twitter, dismissing the suit and saying that Twitter is protected by the Communications Decency Act of 1996. The other case is still pending. (Both were filed in California.)

Section 230 of the act shields “online intermediaries that host or republish speech … against a range of laws that might otherwise be used to hold them legally responsible for what others say and do,” according to the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a digital rights organization. The result, according to EFF, has been the flourishing of an Internet economy that includes Yelp, YouTube and Amazon — where individual users are held responsible for their own conduct on the platforms.

A lawyer representing the Orlando shooting victims' families said that Monday's filing contains a new claim that no lawsuit has tried before. It alleges that tech companies create new content that does not enjoy the protections of Section 230 when they marry advertising with an ISIS supporter's online posts. “While they didn't create the ad, and they didn't create the posting, by putting those things together, they created specific unique content,” said Keith Altman, an attorney at Excolo Law.
It's almost as if people are the problem.

Hero cop of Pulse shooting is terminated from force
An officer hailed as a hero after the Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando, Fla. and says he suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder from the carnage of the massacre is being let go — just six months before he’d become vested in his pension.

Omar Delgado, 45, a corporal at the Eatonville Police Department, was one of the first officers at club in the early hours of June 12, 2016 after a gunman opened fire and left 49 dead and dozens more injured in what is now the second-deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history.
...
Delgado says the department told him they needed to replace him because of his PTSD and because they need an additional officer on patrol, a job he can no longer do.

He said he’s ready to leave the department and concentrate on his mental health but asked his superiors to wait an additional six months so he can mark 10 years at the department and become vested in his pension.
...
The extra six months would have allowed him to receive 64% of his salary with benefits for life, the Orlando Sentinel reported, adding if he’s terminated before making it to 10 years he’ll receive 42% of his earnings.

Delgado said he partially blames his termination on his decision to speak up about his mental state, adding he did get help and regularly sees a psychologist.
...
Delgado said he plans to apply for disability but until he’s approved, it’s going to be an uphill battle financially for him, his wife and their three kids.
It's almost as if people are the problem.

Damn. I had heard the story but didn't realize he only needed to get 6 more months for his pension.

I'm sympathetic to the police department's situation here. They need a cop that can do the job, and unfortunately this officer can't do it (for completely acceptable reasons). Their decision to fire him at this point is cruel though. He's a hero who deserved better.

He's losing his job through no fault of his own. I can see forcing him out if he was being fired with cause (in that he was a bad cop), but yeah, this is about the budget (6 months salary is 6 months salary) and pension pressure (which is odd, because while I assume an extra 20% is huge for him, it's gotta be a drop in a bucket for the pension).

I hate when humanitarian situations break down over money. I get that money is not in infinite supply, at the same time, it's not like he doesn't deserve it. Time vested is already a pretty arbitrary point in time, so it feels arbitrary and needlessly punishing when something like this happens.

I don't know about Florida but in NJ he'd be eligible for a pension based on a work-based disability. Hopefully they have something similar. Tough situation. However, you would surmise that Orlando would be a big enough municipality to cover a slot for 6 months.

Edit: Ah I see - on a re-read it isn't Orlando metro PD.

If they don't have some kind of leave process where they can park him for 6 months to ride it out until full pension, they should.

Happens all the time for the wrong reasons, this is one where it would be a right reason.

It looks like they have an open Police Chief spot. They can't slot in another PO?

I assume they'll be pressured into taking care if this guy. So many cops working in Florida already collecting 1 or 2 pensions from northern deartments...

I was thinking the same thing - we have one in NJ who is on permanent disability because he stapled his 'trigger finger'. Seriously. Maybe that is the concern but I severely doubt it would be a well-founded one.

Despite not knowing their 'actual' reasons I agree that pressure from officers and the press will likely help someone step up and do the right thing here.

Acquitted
The 12-member jury returned their verdict on Friday morning on their third day of deliberations.
...
Defence lawyer Charles Swift had said in his closing argument: "She doesn't go to the mosque, she searches for Hello Kitty on her website.

"We're supposed to believe she had long conversations with Omar Mateen about jihads?"

Her attorneys also argued she was a victim of a "tragic marriage" to Mateen, with no prior knowledge of the attack.
...
Special Agent Ricardo Enriquez said that Ms Salman had confessed her husband had been watching Islamic State videos and bought a weapon.

Near the end of the trial, a forensic clinical psychologist, testified that low intelligence, stress, and lack of sleep can contribute to false confessions.

She had been interviewed by officials for 11 hours, and her IQ score is 84, making her "below average in intelligence," said Bruce Frumkin.

Orlando police released a statement after the verdict was announced.

"I believe in our criminal justice system and am grateful for the jury's hard work," Chief John Mina said.

Sovereign immunity. The police were embarrassed and coerced her into agreeing to something but they probably can't be sued for that successfully. I'm just as shocked that a (Florida :P ) jury saw through that.

Out of my ignorance, I'm confused as to why she was acquitted. The article reveals a number of her statements that were proven false. Since the charge was aiding and abetting a terrorist act, it seems on the surface likely she knew what was going on. However, I am not in the know enough to make an informed judgment.

Re: 50 Reported Dead, 53 Injured In Shooting At Fl. Club

More explanation in this article:
It is extraordinarily rare for the federal government to lose a terrorism case, said Mia Bloom, a terrorism expert at Georgia State University.

The government’s case was undone by the fact that its key evidence ― an alleged confession signed by Salman after an 11-hour interrogation ― was contradicted by forensic data, Bloom said.

“Why was there no video or audio of it?” she added. “It was very problematic.”

In a statement, which was handwritten by an FBI agent, Salman said she knew her husband was going to Pulse that night, had seen him looking at Pulse’s website, and had cased the nightclub with him the week before.

Those claims were undercut by evidence presented at trial that Mateen picked the club at random that night, and cell phone data showing Salman had never been near Pulse, contradicting her FBI statement. None of the couple’s electronic devices had ever accessed the club’s website either.
