[Philippines] Duterte

Post by Isgrimnur »

Probably deserved his own thread out of the Randomness thread some time ago.

Manila Times
Impeachment proceedings against President Rodrigo Duterte are expected to start on May 15 but numbers in the House of Representatives are not yet enough to impeach him, an opposition lawmaker said on Sunday.

Rep. Gary Alejano of Magdalo party-list made the admission pending referral of his impeachment complaint to the House Committee on Justice.

Alejano accused Duterte of betrayal of public trust and culpable violation of the Constitution in connection with the allegedly over 7,000 killings committed during the administration’s eight-month long anti-drug war, failure to assert sovereign rights of the country in the South China Sea and ownership of undeclared wealth of P2 billion, among others.

What, no vaguely worded subject about an impeachment starting next week, with details about which country you're referring to inside the thread? Disappointed.

Anyway, I hope it's successful.

You won't believe who's getting impeached! Opposition politicians hate him.

Given that it's an island nation, the chances of tentacle rape invasion without a strongman in charge are predicted to rise by 38%.

A dictator’s daughter and the commander of President Rodrigo Duterte’s bloody drug war were among the winners of the Philippines’ midterm elections, a resounding endorsement for the strongman leader’s policies.

Winners of Monday’s vote will allow Duterte to consolidate power and push through some of his most controversial policies — allowing children as young as 12 to be tried as adults and continuing a brutal war on drug peddlers and users — despite international condemnation. The president himself was not running, but he had made his picks clear. Twelve senate seats, 200 seats in the lower house and thousands of other positions were up for grabs.

Early unofficial results showed a landslide defeat for the opposition. Liberal candidates who ran on platforms of justice and inclusion lost to former police chief Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa, who oversaw the drug war, and Imee Marcos, the daughter of deposed president Ferdinand Marcos. The two were among the senatorial candidates who received the most votes, and they will almost certainly be among 12 senators elected Monday.

Imee Marcos will be the second from her family in the legislature, after her brother Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

Another poll-topper is Bong Go, a former special assistant to the president who rose to viral fame as a meme after his selfies with world leaders. An independent investigative report found that Go spent more than 30 times his net worth on the campaign, and he has been accused of using government resources to his advantage.

The populace is thoroughly jaded after many decades of corruption and abuse of power. Most people there aren't all that engaged, but are responsive to certain dog whistles like "drugs are bad, m'kay?"

Just how corrupt? This site says the average voter turn out is 229% of registered voters.

NBC News
The Philippines has banned two U.S. lawmakers from visiting and will introduce tighter entry restrictions for U.S. citizens should Washington enforce sanctions over the detention of a top government critic, the president's spokesman said on Friday.

President Rodrigo Duterte will impose a requirement on U.S. nationals to get visas should any Philippine officials involved in the incarceration of Sen. Leila de Lima be denied entry to the United States, as sought by U.S. senators Richard Durbin ( D-Ill.) and Patrick Leahy ( D-Vt.).

Duterte's move comes after the U.S. Congress approved a 2020 budget that contains a provision introduced by the senators against anyone involved in holding de Lima, who was charged with drug offences in early 2017 after she led an investigation into mass killings during Duterte's notorious anti-drugs crackdown.
...
De Lima, a justice minister in a former administration, on Wednesday expressed what she described as overwhelming gratitude to the U.S. Congress for its help.

She has won numerous awards from human rights groups, who consider her a prisoner of conscience.

She has constantly spoken out against Duterte and been calling for an international investigation into his war on drugs, in which thousands of people have been killed.
It's almost as if people are the problem.

NPR
At the direction of President Rodrigo Duterte, a fierce critic of the United States, the Philippines announced Tuesday that it would scrap a security pact that allows American forces to train there.

Duterte's foreign secretary, Teodoro Locsin Jr., tweeted Tuesday that the Visiting Forces Agreement with the U.S. would be terminated — a move that could have consequences for a counterinsurgency against Islamist extremists in the country's south.

"It's about time we rely on ourselves. We will strengthen our own defenses and not rely on any other country," Philippine presidential spokesman Salvador Panelo said at a regular press briefing, quoting Duterte.

He said Manila would be open to similar agreements with other countries. "As long as it is favorable to us and there is a mutual benefit to both countries, we are open," he said.
