New California Republic...Fallout not needed

New California declares 'independence' from California in bid to become 51st state

The founders of New California took an early step toward statehood Monday with the reading of their own Declaration of Independence from California, a state they describe as "ungovernable."

Their solution: Take over most of current-day California — including many rural counties — and leave the coastal urban areas to themselves.

There is some idiot in Silicon Valley who wants to divide California up into 6 states. All these type plans are crazy because there is no way they would be approved.

That at least makes more logical sense than basically kicking the southern coastline of California out of the state. Our state structure in general (combined with equal state representation in the Senate) makes no sense, so you could make the argument that states like California and Texas are too big and should be divided up in some fashion. Not that anything along those lines is ever likely to happen.

In before the move to R&P because this subject is the very definition of politics!
Well do you ever get the feeling that the story's too damn real and in the present tense?
Or that everybody's on the stage and it seems like you're the only person sitting in the audience?

You get one east-west line to divide California, that's it. Can't carve it up like a congressional district.

Agreed. Moving to R&P.

Oh, but that is exactly what they are aiming to do, gerrymander an entire state.

The "logic" behind this guys plan is that you create a red and a blue state by doing this. California is very liberal, but most of that liberal is concentrated among the population centers along the coast. The farther you get from SF and LA the more conservative you get.

I have to laugh they think getting San Jose (70% Dem) is a fit for their newly minted state. And really only north San Diego and Orange County are conservative, but most of the city is liberal.

That sounds very painful for that liberal.

Seems like there's a potential deal to be had involving giving statehood to D.C. in exchange for splitting off some part of inland California.
