Re: Trump Trade War
And Canada just applied the smack down. It’s officially a trade war. Although I’m sure Trump will claim it’s not and that he and Trudeau are besties.
We need to finish up the Mueller probe so we can impeach Trump, then Pence needs to panic and run off to Argentina where he’ll come out as a gay man trapped in a robot’s body.

Nah, Trump has been referring to Trudeau as "Justin" for a while now, in an effort to diminish him. I think it'll go to "Little Justin" before he tries to claim they're buddies again.

President Trump upended two days of global economic diplomacy late Saturday, refusing to sign a joint statement with America’s allies, threatening to escalate his trade war on the country’s neighbors and deriding Canada’s prime minister as “very dishonest and weak.”

If Trump collapses global trade, do real estate prices suffer - or will his mega-property values just increase along with inflation?

Bill text leaked that shows Trump's intent to leave WTO. This is an especially stupid trial balloon. Congress is not going to do it. Unless it does and then we might as well hang it up because it'll be over. Still in the end, this is one the oligarchs will never let happen to our benefit.
It is more another indication that wow this guy is a loon. I like someone's mention of Caligula earlier. At this point I'm waiting for him to make one of his hotels the new official residence of all future Presidents.

Honestly I kind of wonder if people in his inner circle suggested a bill in order to help kill the idea - basically to head him off from unilaterally withdrawing from the WTO. A bill like that would never pass, and so instead getting him to go that route helps avoid it happening (and lets him just fume at those damned Democrats).malchior wrote: ↑Mon Jul 02, 2018 3:34 pm Bill text leaked that shows Trump's intent to leave WTO. From what I understand he can't pull out of the WTO without Congress so I don't know if that was the concern. It could have been that he wouldn't shut the fuck up about it and they just drafted it to stop the word salad.

I don't think he's a loon, I think he is incompetent and stupid. He doesn't understand that it's trade (and our domination of World Trade and its rules) in conjunction with our allies, not the military which enabled the US to "win" the Cold War and become the strongest country (both economically and militarily) on the planet. The military, again in conjunction with our allies, only props up the Trade order.malchior wrote: ↑Mon Jul 02, 2018 3:34 pm Bill text leaked that shows Trump's intent to leave WTO. Maybe. It would be (will be?) easier to fix if it is only withdrawal. Sabotaging it could have longer-term ramifications which would be more difficult to unravel. Could. Regardless, I think we're going to be on international probation with all of our historic allies for decades to come if the rabid right isn't fixed.El Guapo wrote: ↑Mon Jul 02, 2018 4:40 pmI don't doubt it, but it's better than him being able to withdraw unilaterally.

Re: Trump Trade War
Fair enough. Given how much negotiation he has actually succeeded at, especially as President, there is no real evidence to support the idea that he can. I wasn't thinking of that in my post. About all he can do is bully, and most sovereign nations will tell him to take a hike, or if they're smart, screw him over. I have no doubt that if Trump were to successfully "negotiate" with Mexico to build a $25 billion wall, it would cost us ~$100 billion out of pocket.malchior wrote: ↑Mon Jul 02, 2018 5:24 pmI consider it loony that he thinks he is going to negotiate great trade agreements one-on-one with each country. From that article:
So much winning. Relax the environmental regulations and the cash flows in.Others have raised concerns about the impact on the environment and homeowners living on land within the boundaries of the Foxconn project, who say they’re being forced to move to make way for the development.
Kim Mahoney said she still hasn’t reached an agreement with the village of Mount Pleasant on selling the home where she lives with her husband and 12-year-old daughter. Appraisers working with the village said her home, in a subdivision on land promised to Foxconn, is worth considerably less than an appraiser she’d hired independently, she said. Mahoney doesn’t want to downsize or settle for a neighborhood that lacks the rural feel her family chose.
But she thinks she’d oppose the project even if her home hadn’t been affected, due to concerns about its environmental and financial impact.
“There was no consideration of the impact on residents,” Mahoney said Wednesday evening. “I don’t know how this plays out for the state, but it’s another example where big business is getting all this money and it’s only going to benefit so many people that get these jobs.”

I think in all of this trade war talk, we've forgotten the real problem. You make too much money and investors don't make enough. We need to make sure the world is buying American so our investors can thrive. That is what America is. And that can't happen with livable wages and high corporate taxes.

He campaigned and won on this shit."We are a country that is being beaten on every front — economically, militarily," Trump said. "Taxes too high, wages too high, we're not going to be able to compete against the world ... People have to go out, they have to work really hard, and they have to get into that upper stratum."

I'm sure this will end great.China is explicitly using tariffs as a wedge issue designed to split "apart different domestic groups in the US," according to leaked plans.
As a trade war looms between the two countries, Beijing issued a propaganda notice to Chinese media explaining the official game plan for handling the issue.
It was then leaked online and published by the censorship-monitoring site China Digital Times. Alongside instructions to avoid quoting President Donald Trump or other US officials and to focus instead on "economic brightspots," the government gave outlets a description of its trade strategy.

Re: Trump Trade War
Hilarious. They do the same thing here in NJ all the time - give major corporations or manufacturers all kinds of local tax incentives to build or relocate here. Insane tax amnesty that allows them to build/manufacture/conduct business and then not contribute to the local tax base. Meanwhile, the town might need to hire more police or specialized emergency equipment to deal with new infrastructure. Or maybe they need to run additional roads, stop lights or whatever and the tax payers fund it all. Then the workers relocate to the areas surrounding the new business and their kids all go to the schools, which probably need to be expanded to address surge populations. Local taxes go up and the business continues to profit and not pay taxes. Then after the 3 or 5 year tax amnesty ends, the business re-evaluates and magically decides to relocate, downsize and/or close up shop. It's happened so many times and yet NJ still continues to try and entertain these insane incentives because we're spiraling into a state debt crisis. Good to see it's about to happen in Wisconsin as well.

The EU has already angered the Mangerine, and it's not clear that they can do anything about it. Macron tried appeasing and flattering Trump, but that hasn't served him any better than other leaders' more defiant postures. War with North Korea or Iran? Nah, you fooled us last time.
Trade agreement to limit Chinese influence in the Pacific? Nope, you slapped us, your allies, with tariffs and demanded concessions.
International Climate Change agreement? Nah, you declined to commit, and then backed out.
NATO? WTO? Well, we're probably better off without the insane Americans.
America, you are on your own. We thought you were on the right path when Obama took over, but then you backslid even further. We want nothing to do with any of your so-called commitments.
