You mean send more people who tend to commit fewer crimes than the general population? We could actually use that here in Chicago. The economy could use the labor, too. Heck, we're in danger of losing a representative due to population drain, so maybe having more people would get us better representation in Congress, too!
I have been surprised this hasn't been mentioned that much.

^ Absolutely this. The casual racism gains him support from the MAGA crowd, which is why he continues to do it. "Not racist, but #1 with racists", and all that. Trump doesn't give a shit about anyone who doesn't personally benefit him in some way.

I know many people with racist attitudes that get along just swimmingly with certain individual minorities. One does not preclude the other. "I've got a black friend" and all that.

Racism, pardon the expression, is not just black and white. It's a sliding scale.

And Trump doesn't seem to date/marry based on any real affinity for a woman. It's more about having a pretty conquest on his arm. It's quite possible that he was happy to date a woman of color while at the same time feeling racially superior to her.

And while I would have avoided the direct insult, he does make a valid point. Holding that up as proof that someone isn't racist is...well...weak. As someone earlier pointed out...Don Sterling?

Back in my recent conservative days, I remember getting really annoyed with accusations of racism by the left. I thought it was just a slanderous blanket argument hurled against the right that had no basis in reality. Then I started seeing the actual evidence of it.

But when the GOP in your state introduce legislation multiple times that blatantly seeks to disenfranchise minority voters, there's not a whole lot of wiggle room to avoid the racism argument.

Most racists don't think they're racist. It takes stepping back and looking at the whole picture, and that can be very difficult to do.

Armed militia members kidnapping asylum seekers and turning them over to border patrol.

How the hell is every one of these GI Joe wannabes not in jail?
A right-wing militia group operating in southern New Mexico has begun stopping groups of migrant families and detaining them at gunpoint before handing them over to Border Patrol agents, raising tension over the tactics of armed vigilantes along the border between the United States and Mexico.

Members of the group, which calls itself the United Constitutional Patriots, filmed several of their actions in recent days, including the detention this week of a group of about 200 migrants who had recently crossed the border near Sunland Park, N.M., with the intention of seeking asylum. They uploaded videos to social media of exhausted looking migrant families, blinking in the darkness in the glare of what appeared to be the militia’s spotlights.

Well, their leader was arrested yesterday.
The FBI arrested a 69-year-old New Mexico man who allegedly illegally detained immigrants crossing the border under the guise of working for the United States Border Patrol.

Larry Mitchell Hopkins, who runs The United Constitutional Patriots (UCP), an armed border militia group that spreads far-right conspiracies and rounds up asylum seekers on the border, was arrested by FBI in New Mexico Saturday on charges of possessing firearms and ammunition as a convicted felon.

Not vigilantism, not holding people under threat of murder, but because he has a gun as a felon. If he'd killed them all, they probably would have booked him on driving with a taillight out, ignoring the body parts dangling from the trunk.

The arrested leader of the United Constitutional Patriots says the group was training to assassinate Obama, Clinton, and Soros because armed right-wing political activity is totally reasonable and sane.
A leader of a New Mexico militia that has been detaining migrant families at the U.S.-Mexico border said the group was "training to assassinate George Soros, Hillary Clinton, and Barack Obama," according to an FBI agent's sworn deposition describing reports phoned into the agency's public tip line.

Larry Mitchell Hopkins, 69, who was arrested Saturday on suspicion of being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition, made an initial appearance in federal court in Las Cruces, New Mexico, on Monday.

Hopkins remains in custody pending a preliminary hearing and a detention hearing April 29 in Albuquerque, according to the FBI and the U.S. attorney's office.

USA Today
President Donald Trump's new immigration proposal began drawing fire from all sides Thursday with Democrats dismissing it as a campaign statement and some conservatives arguing it doesn't go far enough.

Crafted by Jared Kushner, the president's son-in-law and adviser, the proposal would create a system to prioritize highly skilled immigrants, but it glosses over concerns Trump has raised for years about immigrants who are already in the country illegally as well as a spike in asylum seekers.
...
White House officials described the plan as an effort to rally Republicans heading into the 2020 election. Trump called on Democrats to work with the administration but said he would go it alone if they chose not to.

"We will get it approved immediately after the election, when we take back the House, keep the Senate and, of course, hold the presidency," Trump said at a White House Rose Garden event as administration officials applauded. "One of the reasons we will win is because of our strong, fair and pro America immigration policy."

Trump said the proposal includes a trust fund, paid for by border fees, to finance border security. The plan would change the nation's asylum system, he said, screening out "meritless claims" while expediting others. It was not immediately clear how the administration would decide which is which.
It's almost as if people are the problem.

Trump says future immigrants will be required to learn English prior to admission.

That's bullshit. We don't have a national language. Requiring them to learn Sanskrit would be just as valid.

Also, who wouldn't pay to see Trump sit down today and take a "civics exam"?

Immigration Policy

Post by Zarathud »

Kushner's representative in an NPR interview this morning was boasting about how "in a few hours, without lawyers, they came up with a plan after looking at the Australia and New Zealand immigration websites." It's like she bragged Jared could finish a college paper with Cliff Notes the night before it was due.

She also made it sound like Trump was turning the immigration office into a job search website -- "people can look up the requirements and learn the qualifications required to come into the US without a lawyer." Assholes don't understand that those with family ties are going to integrate better than those who can take a test.

This plan is definitely designed to block JeffV's mother in law from becoming a US citizen.

She's already approved for permanent residency. She doesn't need to become a citizen, she will likely not come here anymore after getting my wife's sister in (under 21, coming in as a child). Since she will be going to nursing school, she should have no problem staying as long as Trump's war against healthcare doesn't expand to banishing all healthcare workers.

I kinda wish my friend's wife and her daughter had been forced to learn English before they arrived. It would be nice if they could do more than possibly work in a Thai restaurant.

Of course, from what I've seen I doubt they ever would have put forth the effort, and my buddy would be unhappily alone. I just hope they don't start watching Mrs. JeffV's shopping channel.

I still think my idea for a dating site hooking up ugly Americans with adult foreign orphans who have no additional family to support has merit.

Joke's on them - she doesn't want to become a citizen! Permanent residency makes it easier for her to go back and forth - for starters, she can buy a one-way ticket (her current tourist visa requires round-trip) then leave whenever she likes.
