Winning hearts and minds in Yemen

Post by LawBeefaroni » Thu Aug 09, 2018 12:40 pm

Or blowing them up.

Dozens of children, many under the age of 10, have been killed in a Saudi-led coalition airstrike that hit a school bus in northern Yemen on Thursday.

The children were on a summer school field trip when their bus was struck at a market, the first stop of the day, killing 50 and injuring 77.

Most of the children were inside the bus when the airstrike hit, according to a medic, Yahya al-Hadi.

....

The Saudi-led coalition called the airstrike a "legitimate military operation," and a retaliation to a Houthi ballistic missile that targeted the kingdom's Jizan province on Wednesday night, according to Saudi Arabia's official news agency.

...

Following the strike, the United States, which largely supports the coalition's campaign, issued a statement.

"US military support to our partners mitigates noncombatant casualties," said Pentagon spokeswoman Rebecca Rebarich, according to the statement.

"Our support to the coalition consists of aerial refueling and intelligence support to assist our partners in securing their borders from cross-border attacks from the Houthis. Our non-combat support focuses on improving coalition processes and procedures, especially regarding compliance with the law of armed conflict and best practices for reducing the risk of civilian casualties," the statement added.
...

The United Nations has repeatedly criticized the actions of the coalition.

"Putting children in harm's way is horrific and deplorable and making them pay such a price is unacceptable," said Hodeib.
Ensuring hatred for the "coalition" for generations to come.

Also, gonna have to say our non-combat role is for crap if this is the result of our "intelligence support" and "reducing the risk of civilian casualties."

Its always uplifting to see that our "allies" are working so hard to create the next generation of terrorists.

I think Trump would agree with the idea to stop meddling. Particularly since our government does it so badly. The rest of the GOP, yeah that sounds like them.

Drumpf's decisions to meddle or not are based on the principled viewpoint of how that meddling affects him personally.

He's happily sticking his racist nose into South Africa's business right now.

Trump is the gift that keeps giving. Why American's haven't revolted yet is beyond me.

So true. The African Natives of South Africa would never have experienced anything like the government stealing their property. 🤔

You mean like the white ruled South Africa did to the natives in 1913? That's very forward thinking of you!

The war in Yemen is leading to a man-made famine.
“There is now a clear and present danger of an imminent and great, big famine engulfing Yemen,” Mark Lowcock, the under secretary for humanitarian affairs, told the Security Council on Tuesday. Eight million Yemenis already depend on emergency food aid to survive, he said, a figure that could soon rise to 14 million, or half Yemen’s population.

“People think famine is just a lack of food,” said Alex de Waal, author of “Mass Starvation” which analyzes recent man-made famines. “But in Yemen it’s about a war on the economy.”

***
But those [Saudi aid] efforts have been overshadowed by the coalition’s attacks on Yemen’s economy, including the denial of salaries to civil servants, a partial blockade that has driven up food prices, and the printing of vast amounts of bank notes, which caused the currency to plunge.

And the offensive to capture Hudaydah, which started in June, has endangered the main lifeline for imports to northern Yemen, displaced 570,000 people and edged many more closer to starvation.

A famine here, Mr. Lowcock warned, would be “much bigger than anything any professional in this field has seen during their working lives.”

***
The Saudi coalition is not solely to blame for Yemen’s food crisis.

In Houthi-held areas, aid workers say, commanders level illegal taxes at checkpoints and frequently try to divert international relief aid to the families of soldiers, or to line their own pockets.
The whole story is worth a read. The photos of starving children are devastating.
