I was just thinking about when I determined that I needed a break, and what was going on at that time, and realized that it likely wasn’t anything to do about this place at all.

Last May was about half way between when my brain went on the fritz (February), and when it went into total protonic reversal (August and then again in November).

Undiagnosed mental health issues are a bitch.

But, I know a lot more about me and what went off the rails, so hopefully my triumphant return will see a more zen-like RM9 than the one that left.

I'm sure that somewhere, Quinn has parlayed this crisis into evidence that he was right.

But yes, we were kids back then! It's getting close to 20 years ago, which is mind-boggling for many reasons. I've definitely lost my evangelism over all that through the years, but I don't disagree with the general premise and conclusion. We'll keep solving problems until we don't. I'm getting curious how the price of a gallon of gas is almost the same as the cost of a barrel of oil now...that doesn't seem reasonable to me.

Speaking of agriculture and such, I was recently rewatching Terry Nation's Survivors (because what better way to deal with a pandemic than watch a tv show about a pandemic that wipes out almost all of humanity) and when I saw this scene from the pilot, I was reminded of all that great agriculture/civilization/etc talk:

Find the metal in the earth, dig it up, refine it, turn it into wire? Could you make and cast glass for a light bulb? You'll need to know every part of every process. A carpenter, a man who works in wood. He doesn't chop down trees, he doesn't forge the steel for his saw. Could he make a hammer? Nails? For myself, I could perhaps, fashion some sort of stone tool.
