Netgear WGR614v7 Needs to be reset daily to allow connection

Postby jimbo » Sun Aug 19, 2012 3:43 pm

Greetings,

I have a Netgear wireless router (WGR614v7 as mentioned above) that needs to be reset at least once daily to allow new connections. There are two devices that are connected with a wire (AppleTV and DirecTV DVR) and several other devices that connect wirelessly (1st gen. AppleTV, 3 laptops, 1 iPod touch and 2 iPads). If a device loses the connection (i.e. is shut off in the case of the laptops or are removed from the house and returned in the case of the various iDevices) the router will not allow a connection without first being reset. The network will show up as available to connect, but the connection cannot be made. After resetting the router, all devices can connect without issue.

I was about to go look for a new router but thought I would see if anyone had this problem previously and was able to fix it. I checked out the netgear forum and there were other people with the same problem that did not get any help. Does anyone know if there is a setting I can change on the router, or if the router is just not cool with that many devices connecting to it and I need another/different one.

Also, if that is the case, are newer routers better able to handle many and more devices?

Thanks.

I will say that the network is secured, but connections are not controlled so that anyone with the password can connect.

I can't help you with your current router, as I don't know why it is doing what it is doing. However, if you get a new one, I would recommend the Airport Extreme. It is the Cadillac of wireless routers, but it is easily the best router I've owned (out of a half dozen to a dozen).

Sounds like a fried circuit. Have you been struck by lightning or flipped a breaker lately?

Firmware up to date? Might force a factory reset and then reflash the firmware. Or if supported try out dd-wrt on it.
No.

dd-wrt is not an option. I reflashed the firmware (which was up to date) and will let you know tomorrow if the problem persists. I know you are all eagerly waiting to hear what happens next so I will try to update this first thing in the morning.

Sorry for keeping everyone in suspense, This morning it was smoky and I got turned around so I took a chance... The reflash of the firmware was not I repeat NOT successful. I have decided that I am going to live with it until I get a chance to pick up the recommended Airport Extreme to solve all of my problems (both wifi related and just in general). Thanks to anyone who made a suggestion and if there are anymore keep them coming. I will try to keep you updated on the status of this situation as often as I can. Please bear with me if there are long periods of no communication, it is hard to say when I can get back...

I ended up getting the aforementioned airport extreme used off of Amazon for 85 bucks. It seems to work like a champ. Thanks for the suggestion.

Back again. Just to say a hearty thanks to Runningman69 for suggesting the Airport extreme. I have had an airport express in the past when I bought it it was called AirTunes) and used to use it to play iTunes through the stereo. The only problem I had was that it had to be plugged in to work with my regular router that had some wired devices plugged into it. Now that I have the Airport Extreme, it and the Airport Express work great together and both are contributing to the same wireless network, allowing me to have two stereos (in different rooms) and the computer speakers all playing music at the same time.

This also makes it easier for my daughter to listen to her tunes in her room while I listen to something else in the bedroom. Say what you will about Apple being expensive, the setup was stupidly easy and it just works.

I will happily buy anything else you recommend (within reason).
