Best mobo for an an Athlon 3000+ or higher?

Post by Eel Snave »

I'm always putting together systems for fun. What are the best mobos out right now for the Athlon series? Or, for that matter, in general? I used to be into building more, and I've gotten away from it and I want to catch up a little.

For the Athlon XP, the Abit NF7 is a great board. Abit has released the NF7 S and it is quite good as well. Pretty much anything with the Nforce 2 400 is going to be decent.

Hmm, yeah I have the same question. I'm going to be building a new box for dear ol mum. Going to put in a amd 64 3000 and I'm leaning towards an nforce3 board...

I would wait for the 939s to drop in price and the nforce4 boards to come out but thats a few months away.

The 939 Athlon 64 3000 is $179 and the Socket 754 3000+ is $161. Not a huge difference but there is a difference.

Well true but... I just dont see a lot of tried and tested 939 boards out there that are cheap.. the 754 boards can be had for an avg. $75-80. This isn't a machine thats going to be upgraded. I just need something that will do basic stuff and last for 3-4 years. I figure a 3000 on a 754 board will do just fine for email, web, photos, disc burning.

If you're just doing basics, then you could go with an Athlon XP 3000+ and that would save a bit more money.

Yeah I've thought about a Barton chip and a nforce2 board but I may just go with a 64 at this point. Though I suppose I should look at what intel's latest offerings are. Their prices arent too different these days.
