How to get IE to launch a separate Media Player every time?

Post by Papageno »

Sometimes when I click on a link on NPR's site, it'll open Windows Media Player, but other times it'll just open a little subwindow in the browser itself. I prefer the former because you can decide what part of the story you want to listen to-- surely there's a way to force the app to start separately. Does anyone know?

Tools->Internet Options -> Advanced-> Multimedia -> Play videos in web pages.

That should work.

Hmm, thanks for the reply, CeeKay, but now it doesn't seem to work at all. Maybe I've got something else running that is preventing it from working.

OK, I set things back to the default settings, and now at least it's playing them in the bar on the side of the browser. Is this something that the web page forces?

OK, I figured it out. When the bar appears, at the bottom there's a settings button. There you can tell it not to play media content in the media bar or something.

Glad everything worked out. I forgot about the option that shows up in the side pane. A friend of mine just had the same problem but had already turned off the side pane option.
