Mini Cabling Rant

Post by Madmarcus »

I have no problem with mini- and micro- USB. But I loath the fact that every now and again I find something that still needs a square printer style USB end.

A lot of larger peripherals still use the B type connector, like printers and scanners. I wouldn't want a small connector on large devices.

Was wondering if this was going to be a rant about mini cables or a mini rant about cables. I see it's the former.

I'd be happier if I could tell them apart by eyeballing them without having to take out cables to test-fit.

When I run into a situation where I need a really obscure cable, I feel vindicated about saving all those extra cables that I didn't think anyone would ever use again!

That's why it's so frustrating. I have tons of everything else but usb-B seems to be completely missing in my house.

Recently I bought one of those velcro morale patch things and some velcro cable ties. I mounted the patch "board" to the wall and with a combined with a label printer it's a great a place to organize all those cables. I don't have to dig through a tangled mess or put a bunch of nails in the wall.

I can just grab cables I need and stick them in my bag, already wrapped and labeled. When I'm done I can literally throw them at the wall to store them. Well, the smaller ones anyway.

I store my cables in a box, where they promptly become entwined with all other cables in that box. I'm fairly certain every cable known to man is in that box, one just has to have the patience to locate it, and then detangle it.

In most cases, I admit it's easier to just buy another damn cable.

My cable rant is when 20' Ethernet cables that are strung behind stuff and are the sole connection between my main PC and the router, suddenly decide to flake out.
