Nvidia loses in court ...must pay for GTX 970 memory lies

Post by Daehawk »

Seems rather harsh. Also as always the only winners in a class action suit are the lawyers...Get your $30 if you bought a GTX 970 and think that 500 meg ram matters being slower.

STORY
Earlier this year the GPU designer was hit with a class action lawsuit claiming the company had falsely advertised the GTX 970 as having 4GB of VRAM. Nvidia responded to the claims, however it will now have to pay out a hefty sum in compensation.
According to Top Class Actions, Nvidia will have to pay every buyer of the GTX 970 $30, and an additional $1.3 million in attorneys' fees. In addition, there's no cap on the total amount Nvidia will have to pay consumers.

I got an e-mail from Newegg on Monday notifying me of the decision and they'd send me something later letting me know how to file a claim.

Huh, I have one of those too. I guess I should see if I can find the documentation.

It seems silly to me but I'm not going to turn up my nose at $30. :P

I got a letter yesterday saying that my documentation was inadequate. I can't be bothered to try again.

Same here. I think I will try again, though. If they deny me again maybe I'll make a huge deal about it or something. Sounds fun.

Just a heads up - my $30 check from NVidia arrived today; must be cashed by 10/12/17 or it will be void. No additional checks will be offered, blah blah blah. Here's hoping some of you had success...

I got my check yesterday as well. <shrug> I'll take the money, didn't feel like the deceived me honestly. But it was an expensive card. :)

Yeah I got my check yesterday too. I had forgotten all about it.

I briefly considered putting it toward an 1070 - then I checked the going prices on those cards.

I think I'll stick with my 970 for awhile.

I overlooked this thread, but I bought the card in question during the window. So I missed 30 clams.

On the other hand, I've been pretty happy with the card, so I can't really claim that NVidia ought to have made me whole.

In short: congratulations to you timely claimants!

There's rumor that GPUs are cheaper on eBay when cryptocurrency miners are dumping their hardware due to drop in prices (and thus mining becoming unviable)
