Thinking of mood lighting for monitor...tips? Opinions?

Post by Daehawk »

Will this go better than vape? :)....For a while Ive thought about mood lighting for my monitor. Its lights you put on the back on the monitor so they glow on the background behind it ..wall, shade , whatever...and match the on screen colors as best they can. So if theres a lot of blue on screen then it glows blue around the monitor itself. Thought it might add something to games.

Anyone tried it or use it? Is it cool or not?

What in the name of holy hell is going on over there? :)
And in banks across the world
Christians, Moslems, Hindus, Jews
And every other race, creed, colour, tint or hue
Get down on their knees and pray
The raccoon and the groundhog neatly
Make up bags of change
But the monkey in the corner
Well he's slowly drifting out of range

The first video looks pretty cool and it's not over the top. The other 2 videos look kinda cool in theory but it would give me a headache sitting in a dark room in front of the monitor with all those colors flashing all over. YMMV

Do you want eye strain? Because that's how you get eye strain.

My recommendation: Go get a clip-on lamp for ten bucks at Wal-Mart. Clamp it to the edge of your desk behind your monitor, pointed directly at the back of it. Now grab a full-spectrum daylight bulb, not too bright, and put it in. Turn it on. You get top quality back lighting with almost none of the cost of backlighting kits. Since it is a daylight bulb, it does not alter your color perception (our eyes see daylight as 'neutral'.) It adds depth, makes your monitor stand out, lets you game in the dark without messing with your vision, and actually looks pretty good.

If it isn't bright enough, you can also tape a piece of white paper to the back of your monitor to increase how much it reflects back at the wall.

Heh, reminds me of that hilarious Simpsons scene where Homer is at the Kwik e Mart buying the most embarrassing stuff possible to cover up his wanting to buy illegal fireworks:

Homer:Yeah, um, give me one of those porno magazines, a large box of condoms, a bottle of Old Harper, a box of panty shields... [rapid undertone] and some illegal fireworks... [normal voice] and one of those disposable enemas. You know what? Make it two.
[Marge is looking through the grocery bag filled with fireworks and embarrassing hygiene and sexual products Homer bought at the convenience store.]
Marge: Ew, Homer. Whatever you're planning for tonight, count me out.

If you need that to enjoy games, try different games. Whatever it might add isn't really worth it IMO.

I can honestly say I've never played a video game and thought, "You know, this is fine but it would be so much better if I had a slowly pulsating orange light to set the mood."

Not bad but I agree it would probably cause eyestrain unless you kept it to only red.

That actually looks kind of cool.

My biggest problem with playing in the dark was my KB, but now that I have one of those light up ones I'm fine. I keep it at the lowest possible brightness, and it is also red.

Why red? Because as astronomy people know it doesn't mess up your night vision. Not as much as other colors, anyway.

Does the word "trippy" mean nothing to you. I would buy that if it came with a sheet of blotter.

That $89 one seems like the perfect thing...other than that price. I could probably throw some LED strip lighting together with free software for about $20 or less. But that does seem like a great product. Seems a really immersive item.

Funnily enough this just popped up on Monoprice . And its $13.
A Colorful Way to Reduce Eyestrain

Get professional backlighting instantly with the SmartFX LED Bias Light Strip. Designed for HDTVs and computer monitors, this peel-and-stick light strip produces a soft backlit glow that reduces glare and eyestrain and increases the viewer’s perceived image clarity and contrast. Choose one of the seven vibrant color settings, or set the strip to cycle through them at different speeds for a light show. If you’re feeling extra creative, place it in the kitchen, on the stairs, or in the bedroom to create soothing mood lighting on demand.

EDIT: NM doesn't appear to mimic on screen colors. Just a light strip I think.

Going back to what I said earlier: Unless you have a good reason, you want natural daylight color, not specific colors. It will not do much to reduce eyestrain, and coloring the surrounding area will affect how your eyes interpret the colors on the screen (ie, it will effectively alter the show's/game's colors.)

I'm using the cheapest Antec bias lighting strip, works fine. It really does make a difference. The amount of lighting is not so distracting as I thought it would be. If I wanted a bright room I'd just turn the lights on, I was worried that bias lighting would make it feel that way. I did recalibrate my monitor after adding the lighting though. One thing I wish I had is a way to control the bias lighting via the computer, it has an on/off switch. The light will go out if I shut off my surge protector, but I don't like to shut off my surge protector.

Came across some on Amazon for $8. I only wish these things knew what colors were being displayed on the monitor and match that. Thats what I want. Ive seen that. the stuff I see now is just on and the color you set. Not what I want. But then again what do I expect at $8.
