Reinstallation/Upgrade

Post by Rumpy »

I believe I've finally entered the 21st century! I was in dire need of an upgrade. My computer had been getting so sluggish as of late and I figured something was eating up at my resources. Turns out my registry wasn't quite working right either due to some crud I'd managed to get and an accumulation of many years, and a clean installation was in order. So, I took the opportunity to upgrade from Windows 7 32-bit to Windows 10 64. Upped my ram up from 4GB to 8GB too.

So in short:
Win 7 32 to Win 10 64
RAM: 4GB to 8GB
Processor remains the same: Intel i5 660 @ 3.33ghz
PC:
Ryzen 5 3600
32GB RAM
2x1TB NVMe Drives
GTX 1660 Ti

Do you have an SSD? I've found that even a cheap SSD perks up an older computer in a major way. Even if the SATA III SSD runs in SATA II mode it's still worth it. It could a cheap one too, like a Sandisk Ultra or Plus, it will still help.

Mushkin Enhanced Reactor 2.5" 480GB SATA III - $129.99

If you want speed and quality pay a little more and get Samsung 850 EVO models.

Crucial's MX500 has eclipsed the 850 Evo as the new standard. They are cheaper, faster, rated for longer use, and have better warranties.

Well, I'll probably eventually get a new HD, but that wasn't the issue. I desperately needed to nuke the current installation and move up to 64-bit. It was just time.

It's not that it fixes an issue, it's that an SSD will make a pokey older computer usable again.

I don't disagree on a general principle, but I think it does depend on what kind of issues one is having.
