This is why we never throw anything away

Post by Kraken »

Today I was computing away, and then suddenly I wasn't. My monitor stopped making pictures. Long story short, I suspected that the HD 6950 that AWS260 very kindly sent me for free three years ago had crapped out with no warning. I had kept my old HD 5700 so I swapped that in, and sure enough, I have pictures again.

This is also why we still have desktop machines. I would never try to change parts in a laptop, but I was able to swap video cards in 10 minutes. Replacing this 8-year-old machine just moved to the top of my wish list.

So...if a video card dies, it's just dead, right? Its fans were still spinning, but it was not putting out any signal at all. I presume there's nothing to be done for that.

A free video card that died after 3 years. Sounds like an untrustworthy source.
