MicroSD write protected

Post by GreenGoo » Wed Sep 19, 2018 5:10 pm

I'm trying to format a microsd card that is being reported as write protected.

I've tried just about everything and I'm completely at a loss. It's hard to read the printing on the outside of the card, but I think it's an Adata 32 GB U1 class 10.

I've tried everything I could find on removing write-protection on a microsd card.

Most notably:

There is no physical lock
regedit WriteProtect key is off (0).
trying to access the disk via diskmgmt.msc - no luck, write-protected.
diskpart allows me to set the write-protect attribute to off
diskpart shows the current status as locked and the attribute as off. Exiting dispart and/or rebooting results in no change. diskpart shows the same info again.
Looked for firmware drivers, no luck
Many manufacturers' offer their own brand name tool for dealing with their products. I have not found anything with Adata, yet. If you know of one, please tell me.

Not sure what else I've tried, but I'm banging my head against the wall here. The card is completely readable, so it's not corrupted. At least not as far as data goes. I would think if the meta-data got corrupted I wouldn't be able to read the disk.

Any input, especially details about an Adata tool or firmware would be much appreciated.

Card suddenly going write-protected is the first sign of a dying card. Controller detects issues with the flash memory so it prevents any further writing to the card, but the existing data is still readable (and should be backed up ASAP...)

You can also try inserting the card into some other device (phone, tablet, camera) and see if it lets you format it. Sometimes those devices won't be as picky as a Windows computer. But I wouldn't trust that card even if you are able to format it somehow.

Ok, good answer. Great answer.

I'm tossing it. Not like I had a choice anyway, but at least now I can feel better about throwing it away.

Already tried a 3ds and a camera, none of them could write to it either.

Thank goodness these things are cheap these days.

Thanks.
