looking for router replacement recommendations

Post by hitbyambulance »

security and reliability are both very important features, ofc.

requirements:
* i do not need to have super awesome wireless range - i live in a one-bedroom apartment. a mesh network would be overkill and is not needed.
* needs to run Linux so it can accept alternative firmware (see above)
* ac speed would be good, so i can finally make use of my SteamLink

not necessarily a requirement, but dual-band would be desirable. also a USB port, but i could just set up my RaspPi as a music server.

am also thinking of holding out until ax speed routers are available.

(i thought my current WRT54GL died, but it turned out to just be the power cord.)

The Asus RT-AC66U B1 Dual-Band WiFi Mesh Router provides a great bang for your buck for just under $100. It has USB ports, dual-band 3x3 802.11ac, and comes with Asus-WRT which includes a feature to enable SSH (allowing you to log in to the router and use Linux commands to see what's doing). It's also surprisingly easy to set up and configure.
