Google Mail wont mark read

Used to I could 'mark all' then choose 'mark as read' and it would do just that, mark them all as read so they didn't catch my eye. Now it will still highlight them all but after using mark as read they are still there appearing unread. Also mark as read disappears from my choises. Its like it thinks it did what I asked but didn't. Maybe I shoudl reboot.
