XBox One external storage issues?

Post by MonkeyFinger »

Rather than write up all my gory details, thought I'd ask first if anyone here is using USB "external storage" for games and having/had issues with it? I've got a 2TB drive slung on my One X (thanks Game Pass!) and think it's behind my odd E105 alleged hard drive/startup errors. Thanks.

Realized the implication may be that it's bricked. It's not... it happens, I re-jigger things, it works again. :|

I have a 500gb ssd hooked up with no issues for years. One X now , FWIW.

I have a USB 3.0 4TB external drive that I've been using for a while on my One X and have had no issues...pretty seamless implementation.

Got yet another E105 error. I think it's related to having the console set to 'Instant On' rather than 'Energy Saving', as it was behaving itself on the latter but then switched it to the former to download a couple of large games from Game Pass overnight. Kaboom. Shut it down and left it unplugged for a bit, then it did come back up when restarted but not everything was working properly, so assuming there's something amiss with the core console itself rather than simply the fact that it doesn't like some aspect of my 2TB WD Elementals external drive.

FWIW, since this started I've:

1. Taken it to my MS store, where they noted E105 was drive related, it was out of warranty since August and would cost $250 to "repair"
2. Broke down the console and removed the drive, checked on my PC and fixed "errors" (?) on 2 of the 5 partitions which only took a second
3. Rebuilt it, updated fine, reloaded several games and used it until the next E105
4. Shutdown, restarted without external and eventually put back external and it worked for another week before the next E105
5. Replaced the 1TB drive with a new 2TB drive using a script that partitioned it for Xbox, set the proper GUIDs, etc. etc.
6. Used for about 3 weeks before it started throwing the error again last week
7. Got tired of unplugging the external drive so it would reboot, having it error again, lather rinse repeat

Decided to just replace the damn thing, got a 1TB bundle with the Jedi Knight game for $349 as an early Christmas present from the wife. Factory reset the old one to get my information out of the NAND and will break it down and retrieve the 2TB drive. No idea what exactly to do with it, may run the Xbox partition script on the original 1TB (which has been working fine as NTFS drive on my PC) for Xbox and see if it boots. That or sell it for parts without the drive. Or something. Fun stuff.
