Windows Update Rage

So I needed to do something on my wife's computer last night, and it was like "Hey there RM9, I've got this cumulative update package to install, but I kinda need to reboot", so I was all like "Yeah man, you've got to update, I get it. I have a few things to do so restart, handle your business and then I'll handle my business...".
That was at 10:30 last night. It installed some updates, rebooted, and then it's been stuck on a blank screen since then. If you move the mouse, a cursor appears with a spinning blue wheel, and the hard drive light is consistently doing *something* for the past 11 hours. The only other sign of life is that all of the shared drives on that machine are up and accessible to me.
WTF am I supposed to do with this? Rebooting didn't help. Rebooting to the WinRE environment and trying to do a system restore didn't help. I guess Safe Mode, and if that doesn't work, a reinstall?
Also - is there a better way to get to Safe Mode from a cold boot than doing three successive cold boots? That seems stupid, although that's what Microsoft told me to do. I cannot get into Windows at all, so I cannot use the normal way to set that up through Windows.
If anyone has ever resolved a situation like this, please advise.
