Ray tracing vidgie in my future...some help please

I have been gearing up to buy a video card in the past few months, doing a bit of research, checking prices and value points, etc. The last time I looked, the recommendation for best value card was the 1650 Super, or AMD 580/590.

I've recently been looking at some raytraced games though, and REALLY want that tech! :D Also, my kids are crazy into Minecraft, and I would love to see the looks on their faces when they see/play raytraced Minecraft. Problem is that just for the lowest card on the ladder than can do RT, it's a significant jump in cost from the now lowly 1650 Super (which research now shows that the 1660 Super is the value card to beat atm).

RTX 2060 is $320+

My question: with so many options out there, what is this new "Ventus" edition I see everywhere? I have Googled mercilessly and have seen no one actually say what it is and why it's different from the non-Ventus versions. From what I can tell, it's simply a shorter card than the "normal" edition. Anyone know for sure what the differences are?

From a cursory search, it appears that Ventus is the brand name for an MSI GPU product line that appears to share a common design and cooling solution. I have no idea whether it is better than any other option without getting into comparative reviews.

so don't get suckered in with Ray Tracing. I kinda did thinking I'd future proof, but since Ray Tracing came out there's only been about 8 games that support it. There hasn't really been any new games in the last 6 months that uses it (other than minecraft) The card itself is great, but don't buy based off of ray tracing alone.

Ya know, I thought about that, and wondered if ray tracing could be the next "3D" fad to come and go. Thing is, it DOES significantly increase the visual quality of games, so it's not really a gimmick in that sense. But maybe it's a PITA to code (or go back to old games and re-code). We could also see a slew of new games using it.

I guess you could think of it in terms of "how much extra is it worth to play Minecraft (and maybe three more games on that list) with raytracing?" It's possible that as a tech it could die if very few games support it, and that list might not grow at all.

2060 is almost 50% faster than the 1650S, and about $160 more, so you're not JUST getting ray tracing obviously.

Wait for RTX 3000 series before you get a new video card.

Oh I will, thanks. Saw your same comment in a different thread so consider the advice heeded. But are you suggesting that that card will be THE one to get, or that it’s launch will push prices down on cards I can actually afford?

I think if you care about ray tracing, RTX 3000 series is the one to get. But let's wait for the cards to be released and people doing benchmark and testing them.

I think it'll push down the price of the low end RTX 2000 series but not the high end one because the higher end model are no longer in production.

I think the dam will break on ray tracing in 2021. By then the next gen consoles with AMD ray tracing support will have launched implying a AMD desktop line. More and more games will support the tech as next year goes on.

The just announced RTX 3070 for $499 (which Nvidia is claiming will be faster than a RTX 2080 TI) looks awfully spicy. Available in October.

Damn, too spendy for my video card budget. Guess I will wait for the eventual falling prices of older cards as a result.

Yeah, that's definitely a chunk of change. I'm sure there will also be an RTX 3060 announced in the coming months too. What will be interesting to see if they also come out with something similar to a 1660 in terms of Value. Hmmm.

Given that the 2080ti was $1200, that's a pretty drastic price reduction, though!
