The Trilogy is completely self-contained. Beginning and end. The Heroes and Best Served Cold have characters from that trilogy, but the trilogy isn't required reading before. I would read the trilogy first though because it's amazing.

Thanks, friend.
And in banks across the world
Christians, Moslems, Hindus, Jews
And every other race, creed, colour, tint or hue
Get down on their knees and pray
The raccoon and the groundhog neatly
Make up bags of change
But the monkey in the corner
Well he's slowly drifting out of range

For those that enjoyed the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency by Douglas Adams is the $1.99 deal of the day.
There is a long tradition of Great Detectives, and Dirk Gently does not belong to it. But his search for a missing cat uncovers a ghost, a time traveler, AND the devastating secret of humankind! Detective Gently's bill for saving the human race from extinction: NO CHARGE.
I don't know how you could have missed it if you're a fan of the Hitchhikers trilogy (all five books), but it's worth mentioning.

Not a daily deal, but they do have a bunch of DC graphic novels on sale for 50%+ off (now $5.99). I'd imagine if you are going to be trapped with family and away from your PC or laptop, these might make for some good distractions while you're trying to maintain your sanity.

There are some seriously good titles in there for $6.

Oh, for the love of...THAT'S HALF MY GRAPHIC NOVEL WISH LIST RIGHT THERE! And since they're on my wishlist, I can't buy any of them because someone else might have bought them for me. Goddamit.

Well, as a neutral 3rd party, you could provide me with the email addresses of everyone that knows about your wishlist and I'll contact them all to share the sale information?

But yeah, it's a ridiculous spread of graphic novels.

Tempting, but I still haven't read past the first section of the Sandman volume I got a while back when I first got my iPad.

Will I cave in the next 9-10 hours? <suspense...>

Did you finish Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency yet? Because today for $1.99, you can get the follow up book, The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul.

I can only hope this means Salmon of a Doubt will also be on sale soon. It was put together after he died from notes he had left. While not a complete book about Dirk, it was a great read as well.

Also, apologies to your collective wallets.

Sorry I'm late -- one of today's deals is The Essential Calvin and Hobbes Treasury for $2.99 -- quite a deal.
Beginning with the day Hobbes sprang into Calvin's tuna fish trap, the first two Calvin and Hobbes collections, Calvin and Hobbes and Something Under The Bed Is Drooling, are brought together in this treasury. Including black-and-white dailies and color Sundays, The Essential Calvin and Hobbes also features an original full-color 16-page story.
NOTE:
Now available for the first time as an e-book!

The cartoons in this e-book have been specially formatted for optimal viewing. The e-book will only work on color tablets and is not intended for viewing on desktop apps or black and white tablets.

There are a number of thrillers / mysteries on sale today, but one that we haven't see discounted before is NOS4A2 by Joe Hill. I really enjoyed Horns and to a lesser degree Heart Shaped Box (which is also on sale today for ($1.99), so it's back to abusing the wallet...

I just finished NOS4A2 in audiobook, and I really liked it. The funny part for me living in the NH/northern MA area that the book is set in was that the audiobook narrator obviously isn't from here. One of the characters grew up in a town named Haverhill. If you live here, you know that's pronounced "Hayver-ill", but she spends the whole time calling it "Haver-hill". It made me lol.

Reminds me of an episode of CSI where an actor calls the town of Tonopah, To-NO-pə instead of the TO-nə-pa, as it's pronounced in the area.

Same here. I grabbed NOS4A2 after enjoying the other two titles, and it is waiting for whenever I am back in a horror-ish mood. He's a very engaging writer. His books and American Horror Story are making me rethink my "I'm not really into horror" stance.

Whole bunch of books on sale today as part of "Books that inspired our passion for reading":

American Gods 10th Anniversary Edition by Neil Gaiman @ 1.99

Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance 25th Anniversary Edition by Robert Pirsig @ $1.99

Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson @$1.99

Sophie's World: A Novel About the History of Philosophy by Jostein Gaarder @2.99

Bradbury Stories 100 of His Most Celebrated Tales by Ray Bradbury @$1.99

You wouldn't think it, but Sophie's World is a really good book, assuming you haven't received formal education in philosophy (I hadn't when I read it) as I would imagine this might be too simplistic. Or maybe not. There are more books in the promotion, but those are the ones that jumped out at me.

Thanks for the recommendation. I'm currently listening to Dan Carlin's Hardcore History Podcast Ghosts of the Ostfront, so this is very timely.

The cheapo reviews ALWAYS look promising. It usually takes a bit of fishing, and I'm suspicious when the number of reviews are below 100. I usually get a lot more out of the negative reviews and find it worth looking for well written 3 and lower star reviews to get an accurate picture.
