2016 Steam Summer Sale .....ITS HERE!!

Post by Daehawk »

Some little birdy said the sale starts in 2 - 3 weeks. I have tons on my want list that I haven't added to wishlist. I need to catch up so they'll tell me when they are on sale. I miss them as is.

I cannot wait to put a game in my shopping cart, only to be told I already own it. I expect to do that at least a half dozen times...

I can't wait for this conversation:

Wife: What is Steam?

YK: It's that platform I buy games through. I only bought a couple of things that were on sale.

Wife: YOU SPENT $75!!!

YK: :eusa-think:

I already made a number of purchases in the big Humble Bundle sale (the added 10% off is great :D ), so I expect I won't get very many things.

I've got $27 in the wallet from my Valentine's gift. But with almost 500 games in my library, it's going to have to be a really good deal to get me to bite on something other than cheapies.

Good. The kids and I are getting close to done with BL2, and want to take a break before we start the Pre-Sequel. I'd really like to spend some time together in Torchlight 2, but I've been waiting for a sale for the two extra copies.

i'm kinda wanting DOOM now, but i'm like 'it'll go on sale!' but then i'm like 'it's a new Bethesda title so the discount will be nothing!', back and forth. i'm very sure the only time i've ever spent $50+ for a game was for one of those 'buy 1, get 2 for discount' mail-order club things in 1989, and that i had split with the sibling. (wish i could remember what the game was. Battle Chess? maybe that was actually $30-$40. no way was that $50. the discounted ones were Rainbird/Firebird/Level 9/Magnetic Scrolls titles i am sure were remaindered/clearance.)

Wife is always fretting about my birthday, as I don't normally care or want anything. This year I asked for underwear and a $25 dollar steam gift card. She said they don't come in $25 dollar amounts, so she got me a $50 dollar one. "Couldn't you have asked them to cut it in half?" I asked. She was not amused.

In any case, I have a $50 gift card waiting for the summer sale for the first time, ever. I'm actually pretty excited about it.

I still have $27 from Valentines Day. Of course, I'm much more likely to bargain hunt on a massive scale than drop it all on one purchase. I need to get back to Command:Northern Inferno to see if it will hold my interest enough to wait for a good deal on Modern Air / Naval Operations.

I really, really recommend everyone just get these cards and just completely cut out your credit card from them - and not because I lost access to my stuff for 3 months. The gift cards just work better because you don't need to authorize anything for purchase - the money is sitting there. During high-volume times on STEAM your purchases still go through...which I guess could be a good/bad thing. :D But regardless, yes - I have been using the gift cards for years now and I'll never go back to any other way.

I've noticed that the last few years' big sales have all leaked early, leading to potential customers populating wishlists, making plans, talking about the sale online, putting back money, purchasing cards, and just generally building anticipation.

Those pesky 'leaks.'

Sadly, I think we're well into the "new normal" for STEAM sales and the days we all remember - where crazy timed flash deals were the norm - are long gone. Remember, when the sales start in a few weeks, the deals on day one are the same deals on the last day. I mean, I guess they could change things but I'm also guessing this new system works out much better for them in dealing with complaints and returns. Financially, it also seems to have worked out better for all involved as well. It really is about using your wishlist to keep titles you're interested in on a short leash and then just viewing that list you've created on the first day of the sale.

I do miss the flash sales and meta games, but I can appreciate it was likely a nightmare for them to logistically keep that type of effort running.

Almost here. I have been putting back for a few months this time, as I want to get a few specific games to play with the kids in co-op. Torchlight 2 is high on that list. I've been in a gaming slump lately, so I'm also hoping to pick up The Witcher 3 and X-Com 2 for myself, but it all depends on how good the sales are.

I'm at 498 games owned on STEAM, which means two more and I cross the threshold from Game Mechanic to Director of Acquisitions. I can only assume the key to the executive washroom will follow.

I wouldn't worry about it. Whatever is on sale (and whatever price they list) will be the same price for the entirety of the sale. I mean, unless they change how they're doing things now. Also, tradition holds that the first day of the STEAM sale crashes their servers for a solid 2+ hours. I doubt you'll be able to browse anything reliably until at least 1:30, possibly later.

+1.

But I can't blame YK for his feelings. We've had a number of years of Pavlovian training with regard to the sale, and only 1 recent sale where things worked the "new way".

I think the prices are starting to leak through. When you search for something, it tends to be cheaper than on the page (eg, Clandestine shows up as $12.50 until you go to the page, where it's $25)

Totally worth it at that price (hell, full price), but it's what I paid for it back in May during a similar sale. It almost feels (the last year?) that the days of ridiculous STEAM sale prices are gone and the only place you find the really crazy cheap games are grey market vendors (like G2A) or as part of a random Humble Bundle.

If you are not able to protect your account with a Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator, a hold will temporarily be placed on items moving away from your account. Trade and market holds protect items if a user's account is compromised. These holds also give users a way to recover items before they are lost. Even if a hijacker manages to access your account, you can prevent them from stealing your items by canceling any transactions that are on hold.

What is a trade hold?

A trade hold is a period of time after a trade is accepted by both parties where the items traded are held by Steam before they are delivered. Trade holds last up to 15 days. If you're trading items with a friend, and you've been friends for more than 1 year, the hold is 1 day.
However - for people that never got around to setting up the authenticator:
If you haven't had your account protected by a Mobile Authenticator for at least the last 7 days, items leaving your account will be held by Steam for up to 15 days. This provides you time to discover any transactions on hold that you didn't make. If you find that you account has been compromised, you can change your Steam account password and cancel any item transactions that are pending before your items are stolen.

My obligatory "everything I'd want to get at sale price I already bought ages ago" post.

And of COURSE they'd cut Doom's price by $24 (!). Of COURSE!

The web version of Steam is fubared by heavy traffic atm.

I saw that Helldivers' base version is $11.99 during the sale ($8 off), digital deluxe (all DLC packs included) is $23.99 ($16 off). Individual DLC packs discounted a bit to $1.49 each.

Arrowhead's Gauntlet reboot is $4.99 (75 percent off).

Darkest Dungeon is 40 percent off ($14.99).

I really want Rise of the Tomb Raider, but my goodness, it's still $38. The price of the last Tomb Raider dropped hard and fast. I miss those days.

Maybe instead it's time to finally jump into Fallout 4. It's at $30. Hmm...
