I just grabbed this for my son for a nice price. Realized it was the special offer edition. From what I gather the offers are mainly a form of a screensaver? I'm hoping there's things in place where my son can't just go buy willy nilly

Yes, the ads are just the screensaver when the unit turns itself off. There is a store, but you can disable it for different profiles.
