il2 and il2fb not starting with sound activated

For some reason, neither of those games will start for me if I enable any type of sound under the 'sound' tab in the setup. They run fine if I put it on 'no sound', but obviously they're a lot better with sound. Does anyone have any solutions to get the games running with sound? I have a soundblaster live soundcard and other games work with sound, so I'm not sure it's that, but I haven't been able to figure it out. Thanks in advance for any help!

I've narrowed it down a bit I think. I was able to start Il2 fine when I switched the sound from 'DirectX' to 'A3D'. However, Il2FB doesn't have that option, so it still doesn't run. Does anyone have any idea after including that piece of info?

I'm pretty sure I've got an up-to-date version of directX.
