Civilization 4, Fall From Heaven SG?*2 More players needed*

Postby mipe » Wed Aug 06, 2008 7:20 am

I was thinking, incase there are other FFH players here, we could do our own Succession game. Incase you want to join, put your name here :=)

Also, DM SG Etiquette probably is good?
Spoiler:
Alpha: It's the report, stupid! We’re here to have fun, and, of course, winning is fun, but losing in style is preferable to a boring win. Reports should be detailed, with plenty of screen shots and player commentary, explanations, musings, etc; a bare-bones/no commentary, auto-log dump will not suffice. Shots of the F9 screens and overview shots of the empire are nice too, once in a while. If you can't commit to creating quality reports, please do NOT sign up.

Bravo:
Let the RNGod Be Your Guide. We will not be using specified turn length for sets in games,i.e., play 10 turns, 15, etc. Turnsets will be determined by in-game events, whereby each person will play until a “significant stopping point.” This could be a tech discovery, end of a GAge, end/beginning of war, birth of a GP, etc. Trust the RNGod to show you the way during your set. However, please play no less than 10/15, no more than 20/30 turns per set (Normal/Epic speed).

Charlie:
Punctuality rocks! “24/48” means post a "got it" within 24 hours of when the last save was posted, and play within 48 hours of that ‘got it.’ The ghost of GreyFox guides this rule, so be forewarned. Skips and swaps are fine, but try to let us know sooner, rather than later; waiting 47 hours to ask for a skip is lame. Punk out two times in a row, and you’ll be dropped from the roster.

Delta
: Major game decisions (war/peace declarations, religion swaps, city placement or specialization, wonder/nat'l wonder placement, use of GPs, etc) should be arrived at via group consensus. One of the aims of SGs are to improve our gameplay, so strategy discussions are of paramount importance in order to establish a group consensus. Players can NOT just check-in with their turns every couple of weeks. If you won't (not can't) contribute, don't sign up.

Remember:

1. If the team disagrees with you, either argue your case better, or do it their way. Do NOT just blow them off and do it your way because it's your turn.
2. However, if there’s no consensus and you’re up, do it your way and explain why. Conversely, if someone else is up, don't whine when they do it their way.
3. Similarly, overruling techs or city builds is rude and should be done via consensus, barring an emergency.
4. In extraordinary situations, sometimes an opportunity presents itself that the group didn't foresee. If the consequences of it are great, players should stop, and refer the question to the group.
5. If you deem the situation too serious and want some group discussion, feel free to "hold your breath" and not play until you get some input.

Echo:
Be Excellent to Each Other. Being a better player does not give you the right to belittle anyone else or their play. Other people are going to disagree with you on major decisions; get used to the idea, and play nice. If not, take your ball and go home. On the other hand, when pointing out any weed, try to be nice ~ a spoonful of sugar and all that.

Foxtrot:
Thread spam is good. We’re here to play in a friendly environment. Trash talking, poking fun, gentle ribbing, virtual noogies, and generally horsing around are all encouraged. However, don’t be jerk.

Golf:
Automate sparingly, and always inform the team.
1. Workers should almost never be automated, except perhaps late-game or building a trade network. However, if you have to, set your game options to “disallow automated worker forest chopping” and “keep previous improvements.”
2. Use of the “Emphasis” buttons is fine, but let the group know and explain your reasoning (specialization is a major game decision). If you prevent growth in a city, let the group know and remind them to take it off. Do NOT let the governor select build orders.
3. Sending units on go-to routes that last beyond your set is acceptable only if they’re heading for a rally point or if you otherwise inform your teammates.

Hotel:
NEVER fortify Great People. Is it so hard to push the spacebar 15 times??

India
: The Captain Reserves the Right to be a jerk. SGs are a group effort, and require everyone to participate. If you're not pulling your weight, then don't be surprised if you're no longer in the game.

Game settings:
Game: Fall From Heaven 2
Version: 0.34, Patch ? (newest at the moment of writing)
Map: ???
Map Size: Large
Difficulty: Noble
Victory conditions: All?

Special Conditions:
??

What I'm thinking, is make this very OO styled game. State Religion must always be Octopus Overlords (or none if you dont have it yet), Maybe religious victory, and not allow to war against other OO religions?

Player list:
1. Mipe
2. Stefan Stirzaker
3. Jeff T (If he gets his PC back)
4.
5.
(player list might get bigger if more players, but absolute max is... I don't know :( )
Also, make suggestions for all parts with ?

Stefan, do you personally have any ideas with what we would play with?
I personally think that Perpentrach (or whatever it's spelled) would be great to use on SG, because the craziness (People which don't know what I mean, Perpentrach has trait, which randomly gives him 3 traits, which can change at any turn, to anything) :)

I think map side medium to start with depending upon number of humans playing, if we fill up the other spots with AI lets go Large size. difficulty I would say Noble :)

How are we supposed to fill the other spots with AI? As we all are playing same civilization... Yeah, I think Noble would be good.

Is this going to be via email or are you going to have regular playing sessions?

I might be able to get in on this, but I'm still waiting for my computer to get out of the shop.

We do it like this:

Person A plays about 20 turns, uploads the save at the forum (or other place if can't upload to this forum)
After that, Person B gets the save person A uploaded, and plays about 20 turns. He uploads the save, and Person C gets it and plays it. It continues like that until the last player on list, player Z, which uploads the game, and person A again plays it.

Come on, I wanna read about this! I haven't nearly played Civ4 enough to expect to play in this myself, but it'd be nice to read about a succession game. FFH2 has made it to version 0.33 lately, BTW.

Okay, I'll bite. I installed this thing and had some first game, then another where I used the OO religion exclusively. :binky: :binky: :binky: I think I'll manage now. The first game I was Lurchuip and used Kilmorph as religion in a game at Noble difficulty level. It was a very boring builder game where I made peace with everybody to be able to trade techs, a strategy I adopted in Civ1 to great effect. I abandoned the game when I had 150% of points to the next runner up and basically built all the wonders there were. Though it was evident that I was going to win it would have taken lots and lots of hours to complete this, and I didn't have the willpower to go through all that micromanagement. For my second game I wanted a bit more action and upped the difficulty setting to Monarch, chose Daviello, quickly took out the first civ I found and made the second one my Vasall after taking time to research the tech. The game had two continents, I was on "evil island" and the remaining three civs (2 good, 1 neutral) were on the other island. The neutral civ brought the Mercurians into the world which immediately declared war on me, so I took the Mercurians out after some time and made their masters my vasall. They did have one very big stack which attacked me shortly before I defeated the Mercurians, that was the most interesting so far. Now it's about turn 250 and the two remaining good civs are about to combine and declare war on me, too, the bigger one which takes the other one as its Vasall has more points and far bigger cities than me, seems to be ahead in research, too, so I hope that she'll finally offer some challenge so I have fun. I didn't use magic except from priests (Tsunami is awesome) because the AI isn't smart enough for that, too, unfortunately.

My thoughts on the setup for this succession game:
- I'll only play if we're semi-aggressive and plan on a Domination victory. Fight against one other civ or prepare for attack on another civ at all time, no boring builder games where all you do is control production queues.
- I suggest to increase the difficulty level to at least Prince. I know I got whooped by the Noble AI on Civ4, too, but with the FFH mod you can play at least 1-2 difficulty levels higher than vanilla Civ4 because the AI can't make much use of the new things available to them. I do admit that I did a fair amount of save-load-cheating, whenever I forgot to change building queues or the city plots, didn't send somebody off or the wrong way, didn't change the research/tax sliders or stuff like that, which I'll intend to abstain from from now on. It just means that it'll take a little more time to finish things, even if you get a real setback. I'm just too impatient and diligent about minmaxing. So I hope that by not using the save/load functionality but instead use bigger stacks, accept a loss and make more use of the combat approximation (basically above 70% is okay, 80% and up is good, anything lower you have a good chance of losing the unit), the game will get harder and thus more interesting for me.
- We should discuss what civics we want to aim and race for in the early game. God King? Or City States? etc.

Since you are still looking for players, both JonathanStrange and Orgull have admitted in various threads that playing FFH is basically all the gaming they do these days. You might want to ask them to join. BTW, they released patches F and G in the meantime. :)

Isn't OO already a little aggressive religion? Also, you mixed it, the FFH AI is 1-2 difficulties more difficult than vanilla. Also, no Save/load abusing. There would be no challenge if one would just reload until winning a battle.

You're joking, right? The FFH AI feels like a lobotomized Civ4 AI. It's unaware of the magic system in general and I have yet to see an AI use spells and unit upgrades effectively. Maybe it has to do with FFH offering more things to abuse for a human player, maybe it has to do with me finally learning a little better how to play this game right, but my FFH games so far felt a lot less difficult than my vanilla Civ4 games... years ago.

Oh yeah.. I forgot.. Last time I read the info's when the game was still in beta of Fire.. Now It's on Shadow already... Back then the magic system was alot simplier + no worldspells etc.

Also, are you sure that instead the AI getting worse, it's you getting better?
