Salty beverages

Post by Captain Caveman »

Both sugary and salty foods can be quite tasty, yet when it comes to beverages only sugary drinks seem appealing. Why does the thought of a salty beverage disgust me so? Why will I glady eat a wide range of salty foods but I can't even consider the idea of consuming a salty drink?

Gatorade has some salt in it. We used to drink a kool-aid mix that was salted during football practice, too.

No, no, no. They don't make salty drinks precisely because they aren't tasty. My question is, why aren't they tasty? Salty foods are.

Sugary foods = good.

Salty foods = good.
Salty drinks = yuck.... why?

The dehydration is more immediately noticeable would be my guess. It just isn't a good combination.

My friends, in Japan, they make everything.

I actually drank a bottle of Monkey Fizz once, but I haven't had Salty Cat.

Monkey Fizz is grape soda. With a little bit of vinegar. No, don't ask, I don't get it either.

Why would you ever drink anything with those names? Especially if the F is somehow accidentally misprinted as a J.

Bloody Marys. Plus I'll finish off the pickle or sauerkraut jar by taking a sip.

But yeah, in general you don't want to consume a huge glass of salted beverage. It's your body saying, "Hey, this will dehydrate me!" Thank god it doesn't say the same about alcohol.

Did you miss ChrisGrenard's post? The protopeople who liked salty drinks didn't live to reproduce.

Alcoholic drinks like the ones mentioned are the only ones I can think of...umm Margarita. Of course go to the Japanese for the truely strange crap they consume.

Maybe salty drinks require more salt than salty foods in order to get a salty taste? If so, maybe our body just doesn't like all the extra salt.

Just had a "salty plum soda" at my local pho (Vietnamese noodle) place... Didn't like it that much.

I knew a guy when I was in law school who would salt his beer. He said it was something he picked up while in the Army.

When I drink, I do it to quench my thirst. The only way I can do it is to drink water, which is the only thing I drink. Everything else is awful to me.

Has anyone had pickled or salty lemonade at a Vietnamese place? That's a wonderful drink!

Without sodium, you can't absorb water. If you don't have salt with your water, you die.

My dad got the same habit in the navy. A pinch of salt can put a head on flat beer.

Salty dog also has salt on the rim.

The problem with salty drinks is that it's hard not to make them taste like seawater.

In Japan I had water mixed with shochu (Japanese distilled alcohol) and umeboshi (pickled plum). Really nasty, but the guy I was with loved it.

There's quite a bit of saltiness lurking underneath in the taste of most beers. That's why dogs will happily lap up lager spilled on the floor.

My dog doesn't drink beer. It was a sad day when that was discovered. :(

That's simply not true. You can absorb water even if you reduced sodium intake to zero.

It wouldn't be healthy, of course - your body needs both. However, the balance of water and sodium in the body is controlled not by absorption, but by the sodium concentration of the urine.

I knew you were desperate Kelric, but trying to get your dog drunk just to stick it in his butt?

You're a monster.
