Game of Thrones season 1 on HBO

Postby Flatlander » Wed Oct 21, 2009 11:56 am

HBO has finished casting George RR Martin's Game of Thrones. Here's a list of the actors and their pictures.

Looks like a great cast. Reading the books, I'd pictured most of the characters very differently. For some reason, I kind of had Ned Stark pictured as Charlton Heston in El Cid.
Cersei Lannister was Kate Vernon (Ellen Tigh from BSG). Brian Blessed was King Robert. Syrio Forel was Patrick Stewart, Bill Fagerbakke as Hodor, etc.

Gotta say, Rory Mccan, the actor playing the Hound, is one mean looking cuss.

Many times in the books, Arya was characterized as being "horsefaced." I wondered what poor kid they would find to fit that description. They picked one that is anything but.

I like some of the choices but the choices for Cersai and Jamie don't do it for me. I know they can Hollywood them up but they just don't have the brother and sister vibe going at all.

No Hodor? While reading the books I always pictured Bill Fagerbakke from Coach. He may be too old but it's how I envisioned the character. I'm guessing they are going to omit Rickon since he doesn't really add much to the books other than he and his wolf going a bit feral.

I'm pretty happy with the casting. Some are scarily accurate as to what I had envisioned in my mind. Others are acceptable, and only a couple are way off base. Arya definitely being one of them that just doesn't fit the book's description whatsoever. Kind of disappointing. I actually think the girl they picked for Sansa is closer to how I envisioned Arya.

Wasn't Cersei and Jaime supposed to be very, very blonde, with it being a major plot point in the books? I wonder if they'll change the hair for the show.

Yes, but I'm sure every character is going to undergo quite a bit of makeup for the part. Won't be a concern.

I can't recall if Gregor Clegane doesn't appear much in the first book, but they don't have an actor for him.

CGI.

Duh.

Or are Elijah Wood, Sean Astin, and Robbie Coltrane (just to name a few actors who have had their sizes changed for a role) naturally that small or large?

pretty much why the only thing I care about is whether or not the person in question has the acting chops to pull off the part.

appearance can be radically adjusted for anyone...(Joker?) but they can't magically make them good actors...

Only the pilot has been greenlit so far, and Gregor Clegane doesn't appear in it. They'll cast him when the show starts full production.

It's not that they can't make her ugly, I just wanted to see an ugly kid catch a break. Kind of like that one armed guy in the Dawn of the Dead remake. He was born to be a zombie!

The thing is, a "horseface" is long, not round. This kid's face is almost perfectly round. She would need to spend hours in make-up having facial extensions applied -- seems like it would be easier to just find an uglier kid.

Or it could be that they'll just leave out the horseface part, since it's not particularly relevant to anything that ever actually happened in the books and people generally prefer to look at pretty people on TV.

Umm, yeah, it kind of is. A pretty girl trying to flee without drawing suspicion and masquerade as a boy isn't as easy as an ugly girl who is able to pass naturally. Much of her character is tom-boy like and androgynous.

I kind of wondered how they were going to handle all of the kiddie sex in the books. They don't appear to have an adult playing Sansa, though.

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that they were modifying something (and I can't remember what) to accommodate the Dany/Drogo scenes. Either they were toning down/eliminating the sex, or they were changing her age. Not sure which of those would be harder to do - the sex pretty much directly leads to the dragons being born (well, indirectly, but they're certainly related), but the age is fairly critical to the whole timeline (though they'd only need to adjust it by 2-3 years, which might be feasible. Trying to sort through Martin's ASoIaF timeline makes me brain hurt).

As for Sansa, she hasn't yet (as of A Feast for Crows) had sex with anybody and isn't necessarily going to anytime soon.

They're rewriting Dany's age for the show because they wanted to keep the sex scenes from the book. Everyone agreed that they were more important.

Yeah, the only real important part of the Arya actress is that she could pass for a boy with her hair cut.
