[Portal 2 announced]Portal mystery

Post by Defiant »

Portal was updated last night with the following change: "Changed radio transmission frequency to comply with federal and state spectrum management regulations" plus a new achievement. Turns out, this update is a puzzle that may hint at a sequel or other upcoming valve games.

Some of the changes noticed and things deciphered are listed here: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/s ... st13767961

Spoiler:
-Smart people yank wav files out of game content folders and run them through steganography programs
-Produces 26 weird cryptic image files in a numbered sequence
-Some dude runs the number string through an md5 hash translator and gets a landline number
-Internet traces it to Kirkland, WA (near Valve HQ)
-People find out its not a phone/fax line but a data line hosting a BBS and telnet it
 Oh, that is too cool.

And damn, 3,800+ posts in one thread in two days? If only we could harness this power for the good of society...

From what I'm hearing, it seems more and more likely that Valve will announce Portal 2 on the 11th.

I'll almost be disappointed if Portal 2 is what it will be. That's a little too obvious of a conclusion.

They're going to announce Portal 3 and a working time machine.

Uh. Hmm. I know it was never officially "announced" as in they didn't put out a press release or anything, but Valve said they were going to do a Portal sequel when it became a big hit back in 2007.

What I'm hoping for is maybe a release date for Episode 3 (or is it Half-Life 3 at this point?).

Yeah, I'm seeing the same. But there are also people that have used audio filters to isolate voices that sound like Barney, Dr. Kleiner and Alyx suggesting that maybe an announcement regarding Ep 3 isn't too far-fetched. Hasn't the rumor been that there will be a Portal/Hl2 Ep3 crossover?

It would be pretty damn cool if we had Ep3 by year end. It's been too damn long.
Maybe next year, maybe no go

It's pretty much a certainty. In Ep. 2, the Borealis was an Aperature Science ship.

They changed the ending, it's a neat little addition but very small. And, of course, is a surefire lead into Portal 2. It's on youtube:
" target="_blank
Spoiler:
It adds a small sequence at the very end after you're lifted up out of the facility after destroying GLaDOS. Just before Chel falls unconscious, there's the sound of a robot off screen, then it says something about, "Thank for for assuming the (something something) position." Then the view moves as though that new robot is dragging Chel around.

Yeah, it's pretty clear Portal 2 will be announced soon.

More specific, it is the "party escort submission position" - a reference to an earlier moment in the game.

I finally bought Portal during, I think, the Christmas sale, and this "mystery" gave me the incentive to finally play it. It really is brilliant, though I'm a tad surprised the core game wasn't more difficult. Perhaps it's just a case of the developers communicating perfectly with the player. Also, I'd heard it was short, but I wasn't expecting that short. I take forever to play games, and I had this one beat in a couple days of light-to-moderate play.
Spoiler:
So, how did the game originally end? Or is that scene simply an addition?

You know, I've been thinking about this a bit more. I'm wondering if Portal 2 might actually lead into Episode 3. Like, fills in the gaps between the two games, and the Aperture Science ship and whatnot. If they had released them at the same time, some people might've played Ep. 3 first and missed a big chunk of the story and not get a lot of references, etc. At least, that's what I'm hoping.

I'm not sure what to think about that. I didn't think we'd be going back into Aperture years later (or at all?). I mean, the facility was already long abandoned by the time the first game took place. Still, it looks interesting. I just hope it's not the whole game. I still have hopes for a Half-Life 3 lead-in.

Speaking of which.. I haven't kept up with E3. Has there been any mention of Half-Life?

Edit: Portal 2 gameplay. Did Valve buy that indie group that made that Tag game? Seems like a lot of the exact stuff from that game. Paint that makes you run fast. Paint that makes you bounce off walls. Etc.

Edit2: Apparently they did in fact hire them.

There is a lot of advertisement in Phoenix for Portal 2, mostly in billboard form, though I have also seen the bus wrap. I'm on board (for Portal 2, not the bus) and have my pre-order in already.

EDIT: Also, the date on one of the digital billboards I swear said April 17th. Just fanning the flames...
DOUBLE EDIT: Sorry, it was the 19th. The 17th is Game of Thrones on HBO.

1: Why don't you have Audiosurf?

2: Portal related songs have a Portal Gun instead of the normal ship, and blocks are blue and orange and companion cubes litter the tracks. And the first time you pick a song, GLaDOS redirects you to a track playing this Fan Made Remix of Portal Quotes instead.

Yeah you pick a song and Glados' voice comes on, saying "interesting song choice. You must have had good taste in music... a long time ago." You then get a portal level with that awesome song and companion cubes. When done Glados says, "this may have not been your fault as our system is not advanced enough to account for such extreme lack of effort."
