Steam Treasure Hunt

Postby cheeba » Tue Dec 07, 2010 1:49 pm

Steam Treasure Hunt. Complete objectives in different games. These games go on sale for the day of the objective. Get hattes and a chance at winning prizes, such as 5 games from your wish list. Lucky assholes win 100 free games. I think you can complete the objectives in the game on any day for the month of the treasure hunt, but the games only go on sale during a 2 day period.

Today:
R.U.S.E. - 33% off, $33.49
Poker Night at the Inventory - 40% off, $2.99
Chime - 75% off, $1.25

Each objective you complete gets you another entry in the drawing. One of the objectives is to set up avatar. If you already have one set up, the objective is completed. I'm guessing they'll have a "no purchase necessary" objective like the avatar one each time.

But I have no games on my wish list and I bet Steam doesn't even carry 5 games I would want, much less 100. Sounds like a ploy to separate me from $37.50 with no upside. :x :P

Those are the two I had automatically from doing them before the Hunt. I went ahead and got Chime finally - it's a fun little game, better than I had been expecting (even though I'd read some positive reviews of it) and I got a 3rd achievement too.

If that is true, then I pity you, sir. What a miserably narrow gaming niche you must be interested in.

Suggestion: try something new. You might like it even more than complaining about something you don't know about!

The option to add a profile avatar doesn't cost anything. And if you don't have a Steam account or don't play them there computey games, then maybe you're not of the target audience for the Steam Treasure Hunt heads up.

Narrow, yes, it only encompasses all of human history.

I buy plenty of new games. Steam doesn't carry them. It is they who have too restrictive of a selection.

The Fallout:NV one and the friends one counted for me automatically.

For some reason The Undergarden item didn't seem to be working right away, but it eventually unlocked for me. I own it, and it's kind of interesting- works best with a gamepad IMO, but the mouse controls are alright. It's got some technical issues with crashes and such with some people, but right now it's working ok for me except the music may sometimes stop playing mid-level for no reason. The levels aren't too tough, I don't think you can die in the game and puzzles are minimal. Ultimately it's a cute but pointless timewaster.

For some reason I don't like playing AaAaAAAAAaA!!!!! (My whole back tenses up and my body does contortions as I try to steer one way or another) but I reinstalled the game and after many, many attempts I got the required score for that level.

So that's all 4 down for me today. A total of 7 out of 8 so far.

I have to disagree with Tscott. Undergarden looked cute but after playing for 10 minutes I have no interest in ever returning to it. AaAaAAAAAaA!!!!! On the other hand has been one of my favorite time wasters for the last year or so. It has tons of levels and a delightfully quirky sense of humor.

Yeah the UnderGarden is a bit odd. You swim a little teletubby type dude around and flowers grow. You grab fruit and use it as weight or buoyancy for switches. Nice looking game, but not something I'd go back to.

Ok, uninstalled Undergarden. Teletubbies went away. I got my free credit, though!

I picked up Aa, and didn't have any trouble pulling off the points on the mountain level. Very much worth the $2.50.

Actually I sort of agree with you. Sorry if anyone took my description as an unqualified recommendation. The game has problems, and I guess I have a higher tolerance for swimming teletubbies since I enjoyed playing 5 to 6 levels of the game. I forced myself to finish the last 3-4 levels in the hub so I could at least say I finished the game - only to find I had unlocked a brand new hub area with 10 or so new levels, I wasn't finished after all. I sighed, exited the game and didn't return to it (until I was trying to unlock the treasure hunt item). Still I could see how it could almost be worth $5 to certain gamers (or perhaps their kids).

I so want to like AaAaAAAAAaA!!!!!, but as I said I contort my body as I overshoot targets and my back becomes one big mass of stress. I think some of it is I haven't played enough to understand everything that gets points in the game- kisses, stunts, pleasing fans, etc. Maybe I'll give it another chance, now that I've reinstalled it.

Yeah, same thing occurred to me. I struggled to fill my wish list with ten games I really cared about for the last contest. If it's 100 from the current library, it would be a downer. If it's 100 free games at any point in the future for myself or giftable to others, that would rock!

I would definitely struggle. I wonder if it could be applied to future games. i.e. you get 100 Steam games, including those that are not released.

I wouldn't have too much trouble. I could easily find ten that I'd really like to have, then another twenty that caught my eye at some point but not to the 'gotta have it' wishlist point. After that, I'd just go through and start picking out anything that caught my eye. After all, free is free, and I wouldn't feel the need to be too picky.

I'm pretty sure you can't gift them. That was the policy on the last "get X games on your wishlist for free" contest they did.

Dec 10th-11th:

Join the Club: Join an official club
Family Style: Get Back in Business in Mafia II (33% off - $33.49)
Stack the Deck: Be a Devastator in Magic The Gathering (50% off - $4.99)
Just Drop It: Set a leaderboard score of at least 85,370 for 'Classic - Small Wonder' in Droplitz (75% off - $2.50)

I've been curious about Magic the Gathering in the past, but have never played the card game. Worth 5 bucks?

Already have 7 of 12 due to already having completed Mafia II, played through Magic: The Gathering, and the freebies. Magic: tG was worth the $2.50 I paid for it during the summer sale in July.

Looks like hitting 10 will not be that difficult, since there is usually one "freebie" each round with three more rounds to go.

Yeah. It could be an interesting puzzler but it's a little flawed and lacks polish. I've had it for a while, and got today's item automatically from a previous score I had.

I've got 9 items already and could have a tenth today if I pick up Magic:tG- it's tempting me, but I think I passed on it during a better sale, so it's hard to justify getting it here.

After moderate frustration, I picked up the Droplitz achievement. That's seven for me now.

I too was considering MTG. Is this a complete game though, or do you have to buy virtual booster packs, etc.? As I read you can't customize your decks, though, I'm thinking not. I actually know nothing about MTG--never played the card game. But I feel like something strategic.

Whoever came up with this sale should win marketer of the year.

Today's:

----------------------------------

It is Better to Give: Send a gift to a friend

Take One for the Team: Make a sacrifice in Call of Duty: Black Ops

Breaker, Breaker: Set a leaderboard score of at least 11,200,000 for 'Bonus Mode' in Shatter

Zombie Zoo: Create a Crass Menagerie in Left 4 Dead 2

----------------------------------

I already have the first two (although if anyone needs to give a gift, I offer myself as a humble volunteer.) :P

Take One for the Team - this is one of the early missions in Black Ops. You earn the achievement just for completing the level.

Breaker, Breaker - no clue, but it looks like a breakout clone, and it is 75% off today for $2.50. I'll probably skip this one.

Zombie Zoo - L4D2 achievement. According to the interthingy,

The four uncommon infected you have to kill and their locations are as follows:

Dead Center Campaign - Kill a CEDA Agent (man in big green suit)
Dark Carnival Campaign - Kill a clown
Swamp Fever Campaign - Kill a mudman (men covered in mud who run on all fours)
Hard Rain Campaign - Kill a construction worker

I'll have to work on that last one later on.
The Project - me building a new life, slowly but surely.
