iPad/Iphone Board Games

Postby Mr. Fed » Wed Dec 14, 2011 12:49 pm

The wife loves the Catan app on her ipad and plays Carcassone as well.

Any recommendations for similar board game apps?

Ticket To Ride, without a doubt. Great port of a great game. I played about 9 games of that yesterday waiting in the surgery waiting room.

Also, Forbidden Island is a lot of fun too.

Here are some decent iOS boardgame conversions, in no particular order:

Kingsburg is a little confusing at first, but I played it a ton once I got the hang of it. Unfortunately, once I really got the hang of it, there wasn't any challenge unless I invented handicaps for myself. The AI just isn't that smart.

Neuroshima Hex (with an available 2 army expansion) has sucked up dozens of hours for me, and I keep going back to it. The hard AI does really well, and while I win most of the time, the AI still beats me occasionally. Really love the game.

Elder Sign is a great port, and you don't have to worry about AI since you're playing solitaire Yahtzee, sort of. Still enjoying it.

The boardgame port I'm really waiting for is Alien Frontiers. There was a great geeky lengthy post from the developer today about how he is working on the AI for the game. Why, it's right here, as a matter of fact.

I concur with most of the games listed above, but would also like to add the following:

Zooloretto - Easy to learn, simplistically strategic and even cute to boot. Great board game for kids, equally great game for adults.

Ascension - Board / Deck building game. Again, easy to learn. Unlike games like Magic: TG, all players start with the same 10 cards and expand from there based on player choices. Expansion is also available.

Feast & Famine - A quick 2 part game. This game goes very quick and again is very easy to learn (seems to be a common element here).

I'm a big fan of Zooloretto, but I wish they would update it for the Ipad.

I added Ticket to Ride and Elder Sign to my wife's ipad 2. Haven't gotten her to play yet though. :grund:

However, she does love her some Angry Birds... :csmile:

Ticket to ride is really fun and well done on the ipad. Our family plays "pass n play" multiplayer and it's a great time. Our 3 and 5 year olds enjoy it and can play it just fine. We also downloaded the lite version of Zoorotello. It seems good. It's only an iphone game so you have to enlarge the image 2x for the ipad. This is a probable buy for us during the winter months. Maybe get the board game instead though...will probably also get the board game of ticket to ride.

Zooloretto is a fun boardgame, but I like the iPhone version better than the boardgame version for some reason. The boardgame seems a bit...fiddly. Don't get me wrong, it's a fun boardgame. Just funner (more fun?) on the iPhone.

I picked up Ticket to Ride for iPad, having never played the board game. I ended up liking it so much I plan on making the actual game a part of my collection in the very near future. I can see why it's on the top of most iOS board game conversion lists - everything about it is really well done.

I also picked up Neuroshima Hex, but am finding the learning curve a little steep. Need to put a few more games under my belt before I decide if I'm sold.

I really, really want Elder Signs but I asked for the real board game for Christmas so I didn't want to buy the iPad version and possibly "spoil" it for me.

For fans of the old (and new now, I guess) boardgame Titan, it's now available on iPad.

And now that I have played a game of TTR Pocket, it is much better than the board game - you know, barring the social aspect.

My wife is addicted to (the iPad) version of Ticket to Ride. She managed a 316 point victory (over the AI) which brought much joy into our household.

Anyway, I'd never played the board game, but found the iOS version very accessible (unlike, say, Small World). Definitely recommended at a price of $0.00.

I have TtR as well, though I completely suck. I'm godhugh on Gamecenter.

I can see that. The speed of the turns can easily turn a game into a long, drawn-out nightmare.

If you're willing to block out a time with your opponent to sit down and play, it's not so bad. Mine and coop's game was over quickly, but we were both on playing the whole time.

How does the iPhone version of the game compare to the real board game? Are the rules pretty much the same?

100% perfect translation of the game, only easier to play because you don't have to hold the damn cards and visualize your route cards.
