Osmos is on sale today for .99 (normally $4.99). As mentioned in the review, this is one of those games that is just a native fit for the iPad format (even though it's technically a port from PC).

http://www.148apps.com/reviews/osmos-ip ... pth-review

It was on my wishlist since it kept showing up on the "best games for iPad" lists I read through not long ago.

All these 99 cent purchases are going to start adding up! Just bought Osmos. Can't wait to try it out.

Once you set up an Appshopper account, you add games to your wishlist on the Appshopper website. You never give them your apple password or other information. Appshopper is a great way to get the apps you want at the lowest price. I really like it and it has saved me lots of money.

I'm finding it very useful, too, although I'd argue that it's not saving me any money. Rather, it's causing me to purchase tons of apps because I can't resist a good bargain. A double-edged sword for me.

Yeah, it definitely incites spending, if anything, for me. However, if there is a game you want, and you know you will eventually buy, especially on some of those one day sales which takes a title from something like $8- $10 to $ .99 (which happens quite a bit), you could come out better in the end.

My wife absolutely HATES the App Store because I nickel and dime our bank account to death. Every time there is a special occasion she gets me an iTunes card to use instead, but of course that just makes me buy stuff I was on the fence about in addition to my must-haves. :D

Angry Birds Space is out. Pretty fun if you're not burned out on the Angry Birds formula.

Key difference is that (many) levels now consist of planets with gravitational orbits. This opens up your shots to a lot more strategy, as some levels you'll have to decide between shooting into a clockwise or counter-clockwise orbit. Not every level is dependent on orbits, however. Some you'll be out in open space and utilizing weightlessness in your favor (for instance, exploding debris in the middle of the field to hit pigs in various directions). There are also some really cool levels in which you'll need to push free-floating objects into a gravitational field in order to crush pigs.

The bird types are the same so far, though the yellow bird can now actually change trajectory mid-flight making him much more versatile. You also get a dashed arrow "aim assist" which is nice in helping you judge how your bird will enter orbit. Don't worry - it definitely doesn't make the game too easy.

There is a big downside, one that has many fans up in arms. Whereas previous Angry Birds installments have offered up plenty of free content, Angry Birds Space has gone to a DLC model in which additional level packs cost extra. The first purchasable level pack is an expert challenge pack. It remains to be seen whether we'll still be getting "normal" free content along with the expert level pay-to-play worlds.

They've added enough additional gameplay tweaks to make things interesting without straying too far from the formula that made them so successful, so I'm enjoying it.

Still have not beat the 2 bonus maps.

I played through Rune Raiders, which is sorta a fantasy themed RPG/Puzzle/TBS game. The art is interesting and the game is really simple, yet has a bit of depth as you pick up and level up new classes. Worth $0.99 for sure, but you might be done with it, for the most part, after a couple days.

Target had iTunes cards 15% off (with coupon) this weekend so I picked up a $50. Lots of gaming goodness headed my way!

So far I've been stingy, only buying Swordigo which I haven't had a chance to play yet but everybody says is really good. Supposedly a 2D side-scroller Zelda/platformer hybrid with RPG elements. The only YK-attention-grabbing buzzwords they left out were "turn-based" and "zombies".

YK, Swordigo is fun and controls pretty well, but the graphics are somewhat rudimentary and no cliche goes unused in its story and world building.

Yeah, I got a chance to play around with it tonight and it seems pretty fun if you enjoy old-school platformers mixed with Zelda (which I do). For $2 I'll definitely get my money's worth.

Any thoughts on the following games:

- Battlefleet Pacific

Looking for a good turn based strategy game. Others?

Me neither...they are FREAKING hard. And i have almost all the bonus points from previous maps (I lack three points I think, which wouldn't make a huge difference I guess - one upgrade?).

I guess it's time to check the strategy video because I have tried so many times, and the few times I have survived the first 10 or so rounds, then things just get insane to the point I quite the game (only to try again a few short hours later...SUCKER!).

Just based on the way that things ramp up about halfway through these two bonus levels, makes me think there is probably ONE real way to beat these (i.e. ALL arrow towers, or only three towers, fully upgraded, or something similar to that that I would not normally do). Typical strategery doesn't seem to be cutting it for me at least. Anecdotally I have read (either on the forums or from the devs) that in contrast to many TD games, KR favors quantity of towers over quality (i.e. better to have all your slots filled (!) rather than focusing on upgrading a few strategically placed towers). I tried that route also and it didn't get me any farther on these levels.

Not putting this in spoilers, because 1. it hasn't worked yet, just gotten me closer and 2. it's a freaking casual, TD game - get over it! :D

I finally reached the 16th level on the Ruins of Acaroth map, by doing the below. Certainly helped get past my "this is almost too frustrating to keep trying" feeling that was creeping up, especially knowing that at least one item (Sun Temple), is broken on iOS (and also maybe the lightning spell?), thus the iOSer's may be having an unduly hard time with these, compared to the PC'ers that paid for the bonus content.

1. Reset your upgrade and max out points for the mage tower and the fireball spell. Next most important I think would be artillery and/or the castle.
2. Use about 3 artillery towers at the beasties' entry points. Use a mage tower almost everywhere else, except a few (4?) key points for castles to slow stuff down so your mage towers can hit
3. First thing you should do after hitting the start button is lay down a fireball at one of the entrances, and your reinforcements at the other. This will give you some extra cash immediately to upgrade your mage towers pronto, to be ready for the incoming flying creatures that will take you out if you aren't ready.
4. After this, it's up to you to try and figure out how to survive til the end, because it hasn't worked for me, yet, but I think it will if I make some adjustments (primarily castle placement)

One thing I have tried over and over on this map is a "reduced number, high power" tower strat, which simply does not work. I think you need every avail slot filled, and ASAP.

Meh. Not recommended if you have already played Kingdom Rush (and if you haven't what the hell is wrong with you?!). You will only be disappointed.

I'm enjoying iBomber Defense, but I agree Kingdom Rush is a better TD game. Still, if you've already beaten Kingdom Rush then iBomber is still a notch above a lot of other TD games on the iPad.

I am currently in a love/hate relationship with Swordigo. It keeps getting better as I go on and unlock more things, but there are also some occasionally frustrating sequences that have made me rage-quit only to come crawling back and begging forgiveness later. Fortunately (or unfortunately) it's a pretty short game, so either way I should be able to move on from it soon.

Me too. All of a sudden, I'm 12 again, staying up till 2:30 rolling and re-rolling my original Bard's Tale characters. What a waste of space I was today.

I also think it's incredible how invested I am in these characters with nothing but stats and rough, rough 2d pics. I care so much more about losing my lvl 1 Hunter that I rolled up for that 18 Dex than I do about getting any of my fancy Skyrim characters killed. Playing this circa 1985 game again and enjoying (and being frustrated by) it so much really makes me question the extent to which gaming has really "advanced."

Anyway, for $1.99, well worth the price of admission.

One other thing: the save system has me perplexed. if you're playing this and can offer some explanation, I'd appreciate it. Can I really only save at the Adventurer's Guild? And when I remove all my party members, is that the right way to save progress, or should I save party?

Avernum: Escape from the Pit is out now. Old school RPG. I haven't played any of the PC iterations but apparently it's the cats's meow if you like retro RPG goodness. Getting great reviews right now. On the high end price wise at 9.99, but they're boasting 30+ hours of gameplay. I may have to check it out now that Legend of Grimrock (PC) has me wallowing in happy retro RPG memories.

Hey you guys didn't say this included all THREE original Bards Tales! Thankfully got in on sale at last minute, but honestly I would pay the $5 just for BT III. So awesome! Playing II now and like it much better than I just because the range element adds a lot more interest to the combat IMO (range was not built into the first title). Some other tweaks in II make it superior to I, but can't wait for them up release III as that was the jewel iirc.

Aquaria on sale for $2.99, usually shows up on several "best iPad games" lists.

I'm tempted, but so many unplayed games already...

Grabbed it today and I'm loving it so far. Put 2-3 hours in and it just really clicks with me for some reason. oddly enough it's a similar setup as Grimlock. Tossed into a pit and have to find a way out. The story telling so far has been pretty good. The combat is quick and interesting... I also played their other game and burned out on that one quickly. So far I like this setting much much more.

Best games for iPad

Postby Carpet_pissr » Sun Apr 15, 2012 9:30 pm
