I read about this project a year or so ago, but had kind of lost track of it till I read the OP. Since I'm replaying WC3 atm, this looked like a natural for me so I dled it. Very nice! These folks put some real TLC into this.
Grabbing this once I get home. Hopefully it's better than the Babylon 5 stuff, some of those campaigns have this "do it the exact right way or you lose the mission" mentality that tends to piss me off a little bit.
I've got the file, but haven't tried it out yet. Other distractions at the moment. Also I loved the old Wing Commanders, and bought them again from GOG, but never played Freespace. Not sure I'll dig it quite as much. But of course, the price was right...
Yeah, the RPS previews look good. But, I've still got FS and FS2 on my PC waiting to be played when I can get my office re-constituted (and have time). Saga will go after those.
Edit: The original WC was one of the first games I got when I got my first PC in 1991 or so (previously had C=64 and Mac). I still have the boxes around here somewhere with all the fighter plans & trinkets.
Played a little of this last night. Very polished, good lucking graphics. Fighters are pretty nimble while weapons drain energy pretty quick so you can't just spray away. Word to the wise: This game has literally reams of text. I'm pretty sure I spent more time reading than I did playing. Not that it's terribly bad text, just unexpected.
Also, for some reason, they decided to disable the time compression feature, which is a little annoying because of what follows:
Mission 1: When I get control of my craft back, I fire my weapons to test them out. Immediately, mission failed. Whoop, better watch a minute of stupid hangar cutscene again. Mission 2: The first batch of bad guys destroys the objective I'm supposed to protect... after I'm three jump points and five minutes of dialogue in.
Look, fellas, I appreciate that you wrote a compelling story or whatever, but if you're gonna make your game super hard, you need to let me skip all the BS so I can get into the action if I'm doing it for the second, third or fourth time.
Finally, just a minor beef, but annoying nonetheless: no taunts!
Ok, opinion revised. After retrying the second mission three times, I give up. You have to listen to about five or six minutes of unskippable dialogue to get to the fight, and then either you or the ship you're supposed to escort dies in about thirty seconds. Completely ridiculous. I went to the developer forums, and it was apparently a conscious design choice, and the developers are "sticking to their guns" on it. Well, if your goal was to get people to stop playing your game, MISSION ACCOMPLISHED.
