Temporary crowns have put me on a liquid diet

Postby malichai11 » Fri May 11, 2012 5:29 am

I currently have 5 temporary crowns in my mouth, all on the right side (4 on the bottom, one on the top). It's been 10 days and I can't chew food on the right side without some serious discomfort (in addition to having some cold sensitivity). Even worse, I can't just chew food on the left side because, for whatever reason, that tweaks the ride side of my mouth. I don't get my permanent crowns for another 20 days (and trust me, I'm counting down the days). I was already in to the dentist once so they could add some material to help with the cold sensitivity, but that didn't end up working. I have no spare weight to lose.

Suggestions on what to eat over the next 20 days? Recipes? I'm sick to death of milk shakes and yogurt, and I can't even eat any good soup because good soup requires chewing.

Smoothies (use a straw to get them past your teeth).
Insert witty comment here.

Scrambled eggs, mac and cheese, applesauce (let it warm to room temp).

Good luck.

My dad broke both of his jaws in a car accident back in the late 60's. He had to have his jaws wired shut for like 6 weeks and exist on only a liquid diet. He had nothing but milkshakes and chili that mom put through a blender.

He ended up gaining 10 pounds by the time he was cut loose.

You can make very nice cream soups with a blender or food processor, and those wouldn't require you to chew. Borscht would work.

She looks mom enough!

FWIW: You may want to invest in protein shakes. There are tons of fabulous flavors if you go to the right places, and blended with milk, water, and ice, you'll probably continue on them after you've been re-crowned.

Syntha-6 isn't low on carbs, and since it doesn't sound like that is a dietary concern of yours, I'd go that way (heh, whey) for the different flavors. Baskin Robins is the company that did the flavor development.

Bisque. Tomato vegetable, lobster, etc. I imagine you're going to be looking for lots of savory stuff to offset the milkshakes/smooties/juice.

A nice spicy Bisque and a beer would probably be great.

I think I could do a six week chili diet. And that should even need to be blended in Mal's case. 20 days of chili? No problem. Every time I make Chili, I make somewhere between 18 and 30 cups worth and intend to freeze most of it and then end up just eating nothing but chili for four or five days straight instead.

Edit: to keep your chili chewless, I recommend getting your beans from cans packed in juice and cooking it on the slow cooker for at least 10 hours. Even then you may want to simmer the chili in a sauce pan for a few minutes before you eat it.

Thank goodness Chili fixin's are going on sale on Sunday. It's time to stock up.

Do it during that Michigan winter and you could save on heating too!

Well at least it wasn't temporary clowns that put you on a liquid diet, that could potentially be terrifying.

And now I am on a liquid diet from having a titanium screw inserted into my jaw (for a tooth implant). I was really grateful for this thread to get some liquid diet ideas! The bisque and beer idea sounds just about right for a Friday night.
