My wife watches with me and has never read the books and never will. She likes the show but isn't as invested as me. When Tywin busted Arya last night she said something to the effect of 'holy sh*t' which is exactly what I was thinking.
There may be issues with the TV show changes affecting the motivations of characters from the books, but I for one am thankful the show is even on and is doing as well as it is. I just think it's good TV and that is rare enough these days.
EDIT: heh or what pr0ner said while I was typing.
I've enjoyed the Tywin/Arya stuff, as well. It's not in the books, but I don't think it's out of character for the books. The Tywin in those scenes is the Tywin I know and love from the books. As is the Arya. The Robb that we're seeing much more of is the Robb I know from the books. Joffrey's a more pronounced waste of flesh in the show, but he's still a waste of flesh in the books. Etc.
Most of the bitching I do about book-to-show changes is not because I think DB/Dan are making poor changes. It's because 1) it makes the show more confusing for me because I have to keep track of 2 diverging sets of details (and this story is full of so many details it's hard enough with 1 set!) and 2) some of the scenes and characters they're chopping out from the books are pretty beloved.
