Things to do in Detroit when youre dead....

Postby Newcastle » Tue May 15, 2012 2:59 pm

Well am headed to Detroit (looks like thurs) for a few weeks to help an elderly aunt with stuff. I know some of you folks are from out there. But was wondering if i could call on any locals for advice...or even pre-arrival brain pickings.

1. Anyone know of a good mechanic? Because i'll be driving a car back to California from there and will need to get it checked out.
2. Anyone know of a good place to buy TV's at good prices? Looks like she's in the market to buy a couple of new ones.
3. Where can i pick up Wifi? Any starbucks? Anywhere? Libraries? She doesnt have internet there, so i'll be dependent on public access at various areas. Will be using a net book.
Oh my gravy.....

1. What type of car and what area would be most convenient. I like the shop at my dealer but mostly because of the mechanics that worked there and at least one of them recently left so I'm not going to be much help there.
2. Uhhhh..Best Buy? Other than that I got nothing.
3. Any of a multitude of coffee shops should have free wifi, I believe Barnes and Noble does as well. All public libraries should though.
4. I know where to find beer.figured I needed to demonstrate at least something demonstrating some sort of knowledge of the area. I'll PM my cell number to you. We should at least manage some type of GTG to meet the new-temp-Detroit-OOer.

If you are in the Ann Arbor area rather than actual Detroit you can try pricing things at Big George. They used to be good but when I bought my TV I got it from Best Buy in one of their package deals online with in store pick up rather than actually brick and mortar shopping.

(1) Out here near Detroit, I use COOPERS on Van Born (near Telegraph and I-94)
(2) Pawn shops. New? Best Buy or even Walmart.
(3) The coffee shops usually have internet around here.

If you end up in actual Detroit, call me.
"Where are you off to?"
"I don't know," Snufkin replied.

Sorry to hear of the problems.

1. Where does you Aunt live? I will ask around and see if I can find a mechanic someone recommends in her area. The one I use is in Waterford, which is way up North in the Detroit area. Also, any specific problems, or do you just want to get the car checked out before your long drive back?
2. Best Buy is a good fall back, but I would double check Wallmart and ABC Warehouse. Usually ABC Warehouse will beat all deals and will negotiate a little on price. This may be especially important if you buy multiple sets.
3. Wifi is easy. Starbucks, most McDonalds, Dunkin Donuts, Lord Mortis's house, etc... A lot of places will have it. You could also get her hooked up with WIFI when you go to Best Buy.
That's no reason to cry. One cries because one is sad. For example, I cry because others are stupid, and that makes me sad.
