I want to see it but don't know if it will work out that I can see it in the theater. I read an interview with Ridley Scott and it sounds like:

Spoiler:
that this is a prequel, but one in which we're seeing the ancestors of the xenomorphs, rather than the xenomorphs themselves. This may explain some of the discrepancies you referred to.

I've been following its development for a few months via the thread at GT. I'm intrigued -- I recently watched Alien and Aliens again for comparison's sake -- but I don't think I'm intrigued enough to see it in a theater unless the reviews are outstanding. It takes a lot to motivate my cheap lazy butt into a theater chair. It's in my netflix queue, though, so I'll see it eventually.

Already seen it. :)

It's not a prequel in the way most of us think of the word. It's set before the events of Alien, but it doesn't lead directly into that movie. This is more of a parallel story.

I can't think of a Ridley Scott movie I *haven't* seen in a theater, but I won't be making it on the opening weekend.

I've been in near-total information blackout on this since it was announced. I'll definitely be seeing it in the theaters.

The question is, do I take the GF to see it with me? She's good with suspense, but doesn't like horror of the gory variety. Without giving anything away, does this lean mor toward horror, suspense, or action-ish?

LOL!!! That's why they invented Jujubees! As long as some A**hole doesn't talk and/or explain the movie to their equally dense date, I am ok with some people. Then again, it usually is better to go real late, or really early.

I'll see one or two movies on 100+ degree summer days when I need that frigid movie theater AC. Other than that, if there's something I REALLY want to see I time my visit to coincide with major sporting tournaments. Super Bowl Sunday is an excellent movie day. So is any World Series day if the local baseball franchise is in the match.

I hate crowds (especially crowds with children), but I also hate paying full price. So I have to figure out when the Normals won't be at the movies during otherwise popular showtimes. Adding wifely interest into that mix makes it just that much more complicated.

I might see Prometheus in the theater if it's playing in July and August or if the local sporting clubs are in the Super Bowl or World Series.

I don't believe Tilt was saying that Halloween had sci fi overtones. I believe he was stating that Alien had a tone that was more like a horror film....which I think is a fair assertion given the feel and execution of Alien.

While it may not have been a response to Halloween specifically due to the release dates of the films, the point that Alien is almost as much, if not more horror film than sci fi film can certainly be made. As for the political aspects of an Orwellian universe, its inclusion in Alien does not negate the horror aspects of Alien. It also doesn't become a major plot point until Aliens, imho (and I would argue even then it's not really all that major a plot point...just a device to explain why these folks are getting thrown into the alien pit of doom).

Personally, I would compare Alien to Halloween before I would compare it to Blade Runner.

Yeah, I'm with hepcat, they even were lauding the fact that people were so terrified that they were walking out of the theaters during the screen tests for Alien (at least that's what I sort of remember them touting in the big DVD set). They don't normally point things like that out for sci-fi movies. It's a sci-fi horror movie in my opinion.

Also, in going back to Tilt's original reply, he never actually stated that it was Halloween that inspired Alien. I'm not sure how the discussion turned towards that film specifically.

O'Bannon himself stated that he wanted to make a horror movie in space...and that's what he felt Alien was.

"This is a movie about alien interspecies rape," O'Bannon said on the documentary Alien Evolution, "That's scary because it hits all of our buttons." O'Bannon felt that the symbolism of "homosexual oral rape" was an effective means of discomforting male viewers.

With more elaboration from O'Bannon, part of his concept was that by making the male body a vessel in a forced reproduction scenario, it ups the freakout ante.

He may not have used those exact words.

But basically, it's playing on these ideas that (most) men have a fear of penetration, and misunderstanding of pregnancy and birth.

Wha? I'm seriously skeptical that 51% of males don't understand how babies are made and children are born. Unless you're saying that they don't get all the details right. But that wouldn't be limited to males.

Paraphrase of O'Bannon's ideas, not mine, and I think it's important to put it into the context of when the movie was made too (as fathers become increasingly more involved in birthing as the decades roll by). What I think he's driving at is that men have an abstract understanding, but because it is not a thing that actually happens to their bodies, putting them into that position makes it more visceral. It's not that they don't basically know how it works, but that it remains this huge natural phenomenon in which the male can be reduced to playing a role that's downright peripheral.

My "interpretation" of Alien when I was younger didn't include O'Bannon. I thought it was horror/suspense set to a sci fi back drop and that was way cool, so I believe I get where TiLt is coming from. While I never thought it was overtly sexual in its intent, it did get me to discover who Giger was and it was pretty clear that his work has that sort of sex into nightmares of horror rape thing going on... And I still never put that together with Alien[i]... And then the disappointment that was [i]Species came out and I still didn't put it together. I'm just dense. *shrug* My real appreciation of the movie beyond discovering who Giger was didn't come until Aliens when they changed the whole thing up become an action flick set to a sci fi backdrop. That blew my mind at the time. To make sequel of totally different genre and IMO to make it better than the original while not taking anything away from it. That simply awesome.

Have not seen the movie, yet, but...

1) The voyage is to "find the origin of humans outside of earth" in the prequel (this movie) - so - no charting.
2) Part of the purpose of this film is to explain the "Space Jockey/Engineer" - the giant pilot as you described
3) and why the Space Jockey appears to be breeding those alien things.

As to why Nostromo detects life for the "first time" - remember the Company wants them to find this thing so it is not necessarily the first time. Re-watch Alien and how the Cyborg acts. He clearly knows something, but the crew has no clue - thanks to the intervention, via the cyborg, of the Company.
