This is truly groundbreaking stuff.

I should write for Rolling Stone, then. I can pare down a report like the FBI firearm crime report down to a pithy blurb, too.

At least both sides of the gun debate can probably agree on this one!

No BB guns or Pellet guns made the list???

The way the cops respond to a call about one makes me think they could have
made the top 20 list.

Their criteria is type of firearm most often confiscated at crime scenes. Definitely an odd way to determine "dangerous". They could have at least added up the guns that were responsible for the most bullet wounds or homicides or something.

Personally, I would go with 16" Naval guns. Those are pretty dangerous.

Well, the FBI isn't cool enough to break out pistols, revolvers, and derringers from handguns in their homicide statistics.

If you are murdered, it's more likely to be by being beaten to death by an unarmed assailant than shot by a rifle or shotgun.

Clickbait - and very poor clickbait at that. I don't think they've had a relevant article that I've seen since Taibbi left to (eventually?) start up a new magazine at First Look.

While I never see anyone buy them or even look at them, there are indeed a couple derringers for sale at most gun stores around me.

It is probably referring to street derringers of the 'Saturday Night Special' variety - cheap, easily concealed belly guns meant to be fired once and disposed of.

Their idea of a derringer is a 410 shotgun.

And yes, I have one.

I'd have said the most dangerous gun would be the one the homicidal maniac is holding. Model and all that would be way down on my list of concerns.

Rip's gun thought experiment postulates that:

Until you check it the gun is both loaded and unloaded.

Until you check it treat it as loaded. After you check it keep treating it that way regardless.

So they dont really go in depth at all on the guns just the type..rifle, pistol, shotgun blah blah....thats like saying the most dangerous spears are a stick wit ha sharp point ta the end.

I think it would be

1. Long stick with a point
2. Large medium length stick with a point
3. Small short stick with a point
4. Very slightly smaller stick with a point
5. A teeny tiny itsy bitsy stick with a point on the end (otherwise know as toothpick)

Rolling Stone is taking its cues from Buzzfeed? That seems like a solid decision.

A gun-nut friend of my brother's once was given a derringer in exchange for firing a burst from his uzi. The guy is a cop -- but a desk cop, as even his fellow gun-nut colleagues consider him too unhinged to be let loose in public with a loaded weapon and license to kill.

Come on, everybody knows number one should be "Long Stick with crafted metal tip"
Well do you ever get the feeling that the story's too damn real and in the present tense?

I would love to have a derringer. If nothing else it would round out my list. Well, I no longer own a revolver, so I'd love to have a derringer and a revolver.

As an owner of 6 or so derringers I don't think you'd like them. Anything but a 22 and you'll be lucky to hit anything at 10 feet. The larger calibers kick like a mule. The 45/410 is a little bit better but it's larger than my PPK.
The best little gun in my opinion of the small guns is one of those little North American 22/22mag 5 shot revolvers.
Also satisfies both your needs for a revolver and a derringer.

BTW Deringer is the name of the Deringer company that made guns in the 2nd half of the 18th century.
Derringer is a generic name for all those type little guns.
