Interview with Jordan Weisman

Will you have fiction to go along with the game?

Fiction is an important part, both in the game and accompanying the game. We're working with the Catalyst guys so we coordinate with their fiction line. We're putting the game back in the original setting in 3025, because I think it played up the geopolitics really well and it lost some of the feudal nature later on. We want to sell the whole sweep of the story and sell the platform to do that.

3025.. I'm so in :horse:

Cool. I don't mind the Clans but 3025 is a cool era of Battletech too.

Perfect, right in the gap between the 3rd and 4th succession wars.

Now to decide what to wear for the Hanse Davion and Melissa Steiner wedding.

Smart choice. I didn't mind the clan stuff personally, but I do agree that game balance and the setting in general were more interesting/fun before the clan invasion.

I don't know anything about Battletech except that it has mechs. If HB is making an RPG turn based game with mechs, I'm in. They've won my trust with Shadowrun.

Also a plus, the founder of HBS (Weisman) was one of the founders of FASA which is the compsny that launched the tabletop Battletech game.

This is great news! Especially with a dev that has a solid recent track record.

Yeah, that does sound good.

They'd really have to screw up to make this game less than mediocre. Which means I'll be playing it in the future in all likelihood.

What's the kickstarter status? I'll look myself later but maybe you guys can fill me in.

edit: oh, the article says they are kickstarting this fall.

Kickstarter is up, I'm in -- though I wonder if the multiplayer goal is attainable.
I forgot to call it "a box of pure malevolent evil, a purveyor of
insidious insanity, an eldritch manifestation that would make Bill
Gates let out a low whistle of admiration," but it's all those, too.

$25?! What happened to the $15 level from the Shadowrun projects?

And $1M before we get a SP campaign?

I think I'll be sitting this one out.

On the fence right now. The initial game will only have skirmish mode, they need to hit the first stretch goal of $1 million before we get a campaign, and $1.8 million before you get side missions. I don't care about just a skirmish mode so I'll probably hold off until they hit the first stretch goal. Not enough meat in the original offer.

Yeah, I'm not going to prime the pump given what they're proposing. I've backed enough games on KS to let someone else handle the heavy lifting. I have no doubts it will be a quality product, but there's no incentive to join early - so 48 hour reminder it is.

$200k in less than an hour makes me think they'll at least hit the $1M goal pretty handily, but I'm also only really interested if they hit the $1.8M goal.

I'll wait until they hit a million to back it, as I have no interest in a multi-player only game.

Actually, now that I see it, 1.85M is definitely where it's at.

I'll consider picking up the slack when I get home. I'll need to read up on it a bit more.

I "kickstarted" the battlemech online dealie for over a hundred bucks. I didn't get my money's worth but neither do I regret it, really. I enjoyed what they had at the time.

Did you mean to say "I have no interest in a single-player only game"?
The Kickstarter wrote:BATTLETECH is a single-player, turn-based, tactical 'Mech combat game for PC. (And Mac and Linux!) The game may also include PVP multiplayer if enough funding is reached - more on that below.
In any case, I am very much in for this!

Over $600k on day one. I don't follow these things very closely, but my understanding is that all the funding comes at the beginning and at the end. It seems like 600k is pretty good for 1 day, although I'm sure there have been much better performers out there.

I kinda want the hat, but that's richer than I wanted to go.

Will think on it some more.

Yeah, I mis-read it. I'm not really interested in an aimless skirmish game, either, especially for $25. Toss in a campaign mode though, and I'm in.

As for their ability to deliver the goods, well, they've done it with all the Shadowrun games, so I don't consider it an issue.

Their first Shadowrun KS topped $1.8 million total, with the first day coming in below $300,000. And that was before they had the reputation as the folks who did such a great Shadowrun.

Because it's likely that Battletech is more well-known and more popular than dice-and-paper Shadowrun ever was, I'm guessing that this KS will easily reach their Stage 3 and probably Stage 4.

That's a likely factor. Here are seven things you didn't know about the game. Still in the first 24 hours and it's already at 835k, which is terrific.

I'm a sucker for MechWarrior/BattleTech and have thrown way too much money at MechWarrior Online (maybe around $300 over time) just to have fun stomping around in Mechs. I suppose I'll be joining into this as my second Kickstarter at $50. My last was Exploding Kittens.

I wondered about Clan Mechs...
KS FAQ wrote:There are no Clan ‘Mechs in the game yet but the BattleTech universe spans hundreds of years and in success, we plan to include them in later installments.
So if this is a success, they want to make more BattleTech games. I'm okay with that.

Aaaaaand backed. They'll probably blow through the $1M stretch goal today and I'd say they are definitely on track to hit the $1.85M goal by the end.

Screw it, backed. They're close enough to a mil that they'll make it over easily, and I'd rather get in at $25 than have to pay $40 when it comes out in two years.

I'm not much of a fan of paying to beta test but due to the nostalgia I have for this game both on the tabletop and computer I decided to let them prey on my memories and pony up the $50. I'm glad they have enough $$$ to throw in a campaign and a bit of RPGish personality and backstory since paying for just a random scenario generator isn't worth that much cash out of my pocket.

They really need to hit that $1.85m. Want the expanded Merc Campaign. :D

At the rate they're going I'm sure they'll hit it...

I think they'll hit it sometime during week 2. And they're certainly on track to hit $2.5 million before the final days, so they'll probably come up with a new "Stage 5" goal before the end.

I'm not sure about that. They learned during the Shadowrun KS that more money doesn't mean you expand the offering beyond what you can reasonably finish. I would imagine they'd use extra money to hire more staff, artists or writers to help finish the game not expand scope.

Yup, just as long as there isn't a Stage 4+ unlockable for "Chris Roberts joins the team!" :P
