Games Finished: 2016, now with discussion!

Post by Blackhawk »

Hey, it's that time again. Here's a place to list the games you've been playing and finishing, a tradition that comes from the Before Times, when we were called by a different name, when the Overlords had yet to arise. List games you finished this year, using your judgment on open-ended games. An 'abandoned' section to your list is fine, too.

To begin with, post once, then edit that post as a sort of 'master list.'

Starting with the 2015 thread we began allowing the discussion of games we've finished, similar to what is done with the Books Read threads. So, give this thread a couple of weeks for everyone interested to claim a spot on the first page or two for their list, then it will open up for general discussion.

Stealing Jolor's great link set from last year, here are the previous Games Finished threads, edited for the first post:

"2016, what is best in life?"

"Crush your games. See them finished before you. Hear the lamentations of their hard drive. "

Finished (PC unless specified):
  • Fallout 4
  • Overlord: Raising Hell
  • The Talos Principle
  • Sniper Elite 3
  • Borderlands (two playthroughs in coop, plus all DLC, plus all Headhunter packs)
  • Grand Theft Auto V (PS4)
  • Uncharted: Drake's Deception (Nathan Drake Collection, PS4)
  • Uncharted 2: Among Thieves (Nathan Drake Collection, PS4)
  • Borderlands 2 (two playthroughs in coop, plus all DLC)
  • Spec Ops: The Line
  • Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel in coop (plus DLC)
  • Deus Ex: Human Revolution
  • Serious Sam HD: The First Encounter
  • Call of Juarez: Gunslinger
  • Subnautica (Early Access, but I put in 50 hours and saw every bit of current content, so I'm counting it.)
  • Far Cry: Primal (PS4)
  • Wolfenstein: The New Order
  • Refunct
Playing:
  • The Witcher 3
  • Overwatch
  • Fallout 4
1/2 - I just finished Fallout 4. My full thoughts are here, but the short version was that I thought it was a Bethesda game, with all the wonderfulness and flaws that implies, but that it was a king amongst Bethesda games.

1-something - Overlord: Raising Hell

1/23 - The Talos Principle

2/13 - Sniper Elite 3

3/5 - I think I'm shelving Divinity: Original Sin for now. I've tried, and I just can't seem to get into it despite it being the kind of game I usually love.

3/14 - Took a long, free week and finished off GTA 5. Great game.

3/31 - Finished Uncharted: Drake's Fortune (the remastered version.) Still a great game. I played it before on the PS3, but wanted to run the whole series together with the remasters.

4/10 - Uncharted 2. I think I'll take a break before I hit Uncharted 3, just for the change of pace.

7/20 - Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel. A decent game, but it pales in comparison to the regular Gearbox offerings.

7/22 - I finished the grand Borderlands experience in coop with the kids, including all three games and all DLC. This has been an absolutely fantastic experience.

8/4 - Serious Sam HD: The First Encounter

8/28 - Finished Call of Juarez: Gunslinger. Good game, great storytelling, but I hated the dueling.

9/16 - Abandoned Front Mission Evolved, because that awful, cheesy port was puppies.

10/25 - Far Cry Primal. Good game. Very much Far Cry.

11/1 - Wolfenstein: The New Order. Really good shooter that did a great job of blending old-school feel and gameplay with newer mechanics. Good pacing.

11/26 - Dungeons of Dredmor (first of several characters to reach the end)
12/- - FE: Legendary Heroes (won 3 games; calling it quits after the last game started crashing every 10 turns)

Honorable Mentions (Games that get played repeatedly, won/lost, and are never really done.)
Sentinels of the Multiverse
TableTop Simulator: Shadows of Brimstone
Diablo 3 (Season 5 - completed. Also spent a lot of time improving existing characters.)

I haven't been neglecting to update, I've really just been that slow about finishing anything this year. :(

Finished!:

- The Witcher Enhanced Edition - 1/26 - 43 hours - This was more of a slog than I'd hoped. The interesting bits were overshadowed by technical wierdness, and way too much backtracking and shuttle running across the maps.
- Firewatch - 5/22 - 5 hours
- The Witcher 2 - 6/20 - 27 hours
- The Wolf Among Us - 6/25 - 9 hours
- DOOM - 7/17 - 16 hours
- Tomb Raider - 10/30 - 16 hours

2016 Starting Lineup
Divinity: Original Sin EE
Wasteland DC
Witcher 3
and Pillars of Eternity

Completed

May 3rd --Dead Secret - scared me a couple of times - picked the best ending on first try - short but fun adventure.

July 9th -- Risen - with level 28 mage character - completed 84 quests - 3 quests left undone, 2 quests to reforge weapons and 1 bugged druid quest. Very immersive quests. Fun combat, but final boss battle jumping puzzle makes it a AAA minus.

September 3 -- Shady Brook - a text adventure mystery where I didn't have to type any commands. I got stuck on the very last turn and it was fun.

December 9th -- Space Pilgrim I-IV - a point-and-click, straight or lesbian choice adventure. Four episodes took about 10 hours... and for once I didn't have to look for a walkthrough. Yae.

December 13th -- I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream - Played this when it came out in '95 but I don't think I ever got the optimal ending. After giving it an honorable mention in another thread I decided to replay it and it held up great after all these years. With a walkthrough I got the happy ending. The voice of the computer "AM" must be done by Shodan's older brother  This is definately worth the 6 bucks at GOG.

Jesus said, "Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body."[Matt 10:28] God can totally destroy us.

Jesus also said, "For my Father's will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.”[John 6:40] Eternal life is conditional.

His disciple John wrote, "Whoever has the Son has eternal life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have eternal life. [1 John 5:12] Eternal life is optional.

Reserving my spot. Continuing something I was very diligent about in the second half of 2015, I'm trying to juggle no more than two games at a time - typically one console, one PC. So I expect this list at the end of the year may be short in terms of quantity, but very high in terms of quality.

Finished
Grim Dawn (PC) - Normal Difficulty
Batman: Arkham Knight (PS4) - 100% - all Riddler trophies and endings
Super Mario 3D World (Wii U)
Uncharted: Drake's Fortune (PS4)
Uncharted 2: Among Thieves (PS4)
Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception (PS4)

Playing
Far Cry: Primal (PS4)

I finished the relatively short story in Roundabout yesterday, but that's really only about 25% of what there is to do.

9/10 Broken Age (PC) - All the pieces in place for a perfect adventure game, but not sure if the story suffered a bit from the timing during development. It's both clever and contrived, but works overall.
7/10 Refunct (PC) - It would be nice if every first person platformer ran this smoothly, but that alone isn't enough for this 20-30 min game to be great. It's a very simple, VERY short jumping puzzle.
9/10 The Room (PC) - Excellent 3D puzzle game, unique, clever, satisfying, not punishingly difficult. It's short and therefore the story makes little sense, if it's even meant to make sense.
9/10 SquareCells (PC) - Essential puzzle game, as well made as the Hexcells games, but a bit more tedious, less variation, less colorful. Still, I felt the need to perfect every level within two days.
8/10 Tengami (PC) - Beautiful and original, but this papercraft game is hurt by limited gameplay, simplistic puzzles, and minimal length. It's still worth a look, though.
7/10 Sakura Spirit (PC) - Nice art. You know what you're getting with these titles.

Finished
  1. Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons (PC, Jan 5) Rating: 6/8 (opinion)
  2. Shan Gui (Mar 16) Rating: 5/8. I learned about this short visual novel from JetFred's list from last year. It's predictable but adorable. I like the voice acting and spiritual message.
  3. The Blackwell Legacy (May 13) Rating: 5/8. (opinion on Blackwell series)
  4. Blackwell Unbound (May 14) Rating: 4/8.
  5. The Blackwell Convergence (May 17) Rating: 6/8.
  6. The Blackwell Deception (May 19) Rating: 3/8.
  7. The Blackwell Epiphany (May 21) Rating: 6/8.
  8. Organ Trail: Director's Cut (July 6, PC, Normal, score of 6836) Rating: 4/8. Good retro art and gameplay concepts, but tedious overall. Better soundtrack than I was expecting.
Playing
  1. Fallout: New Vegas: Playing on Very Hard difficulty and Hardcore mode with a 1-Intelligence melee character, using my list of mods. Lately I'm singin' the Old World Blues!
  2. The Last of Us Remastered: I've lowered the difficulty from Hard to Easy so that I could make some reasonable progress and hopefully find out why this game is so acclaimed.
  3. Luna Silver Star Story Touch: I'm stuck at the Vile Crustacean, a boss battle that happens for no reason.
  4. Out There: Omega Edition: It's like FTL but the enemy is now resource scarcity instead of other ships. It's great, but I expect to get tired of losing.
  5. Gridiron Solitaire: Currently 3 wins 4 losses in my season. Two of those wins were from auto-resolve.
  6. Sentinels of the Multiverse (PC): Have beaten 2 villains so far. Really enjoying this game.
Abandoned
  1. Mile-Age: Mediocre endless vertically scrolling car combat game on iOS.
  2. Alphabear: Reached Chapter 6 and that's enough for me. Thoughts here.
  3. Creeper World 3: Arc Eternal: Nifty but grindy RTS. Thoughts here.
  4. Kairo: Myst-like walking game with some nice visuals but too abstract and difficult for me to enjoy. I YouTubed the ending and read this interpretation of it.
  5. Ground Control: Another sci-fi RTS I couldn't stick with. Thoughts here.
  6. Starseed Pilgrim: I had a lot of fun (and a little help from the Internet) playing this weird puzzle platformer. But after finding six of the "nodes," further progress seems too difficult and not rewarding enough.
  7. Aeon Command: A simple and fun RTS for people who can only handle one dimension. But I can't handle the difficulty. The Alliance campaign is a breeze, but beyond that, I just get creamed.
  8. Bombing Bastards: It's my first Bomberman game! And, unless they make the next one easier, it's my last. I gave up on Area 1-4.

Scoop20906 2016 Games List

On Deck
  • The Banner Saga 2
In Progress
  • Fallout 4 - Having Fun
  • Far Cry 3
  • Witcher 3
Finished
  • Massive Chalice - (7/10) This game has more than meets the eye. I don't like the art style (the character models are hideous) but the breeding of your heroes is fascinating. Unfortunately, the game doesn't prepare you for the final battle so the way you build your bloodlines matters a lot. I did't mind figuring it our but this game is hard if you don't know what you are doing and hard if you do. Good strategy helps but there is lots of randomness which leaves replay-ability but sometimes had me tearing my hair out. Ending was anticlimactic. I guess I was just expecting more celebration after 300 years of toil. Maybe a list of my heroes or them all at a dance afterwards. But Massive Chalice is worth the price I paid and I recommend it. Jan. 9, 2016
  • The Talos Principle - (7/10) This was an interesting experience. I enjoyed most of the puzzles and the progression of difficulty. The story sprinkled in here and that added a nice layer over the puzzles and the meta-world was interesting to explore. I didn't get all the gold stars but it was a pain in the ass to go back and find all the places there were. It would have been nice to unlock a power to find them more easily so you can work on the puzzle. The ending was satisfying and made all the puzzle solving seems worthwhile. I feel I got my moneys worth and recommend to puzzle solvers. Jan. 30, 2016
Move of an experience than a game and at the end it made me feel uncomfortable not because it made me feel bad but because I could relate to the narrator's surprise and shock and ultimate loathing for himself. How do you move past those type of moment's in life? Well you just do I guess. Most of us have.
  • The Beginner's Guide - (Unrateable) At the end I am wondering is Coda a real person or is this a mixture of moments for others. Kind of like names were changed to protect the innocent. Anyway, its worth experiencing so try it out. Feb. 9, 2016
  • Firewatch - (8/10) I'd been looking forward to this game since I saw a trailer last summer. The art and sound design make this a place you want to explore. The sounds of nature are relaxing (the wind, sound of grass swaying, calls of birds) its all very nice. Using the map and compass to find my way around the map was fun as well. The communication between the two main characters is fun too. I loved the back and forth and it was a great way to move the story forward instead of lots of notes and voice logs that other games have to fall back on. And that the thing, your character is absolutely alone otherwise without the walkie talkie. Both the park feels like a real place with things to discover and talk about with the other ranger. My only disappointment was that I finished it too quickly. Now that is my own fault. I could have spent more time gazing in the distance or hiking around but truly the story made me curious and I wanted to know what would happen next. I feel like the game could have been longer and the story felt like it wrapped up too quickly at the end. I feel like there was an action sequence or two that they could not get working and left out. That is probably for the best in the long run and the ending had an impact. Ultimately, I want more of the game so I'm hoping we see DLC or something else. But I don't think their is any replay-ability here. Once you've experience the story there are no surprises left. Also, only 5 steam achievements? That is another sign of a game rushed to the end. So would I buy this game knowing what I know? YES! Its a great couch gaming experience. February 19, 2016
  • Never Alone (Kisima Ingitchuna) - (3/10) I will take partial blame for the rating because I usually do not like platforms that kill you every five minutes. Not my idea of a fun game design. Now this is a beautiful game that tells a interesting story and that is what kept me pushing through it. However, the gameplay itself sucks. Controlling the characters sometimes feels like they are moving and jumping through mud. They game constantly expects you to die 2 to 5 times before you figure out what it wants you to do in a particular action sequence and even then its still not simple because of how easy it is to over shoot or under shoot a jump or platform. It really felt like the game did not want me to win. Add some annoying bugs like the game switching me to co-op without telling me making me die and go into the menu to change it back. The problem with this is while fighting the game you miss out on a wonderful story. Also the game has these interesting videos about life in the arctic but again this pulls you out of the story to watch them. The trailer seemed to promised an easy story experience and this game is definitely not that. March 5, 2016
  • Borderlands 2 - (8/10) - Finally finished this game. Better than the original and a super tight, super fun shooter with great writing and stories. I have to say Handsome Jack is one of the number one adversaries I've faced in games and this helps make this game memorable. My only problem with the game is the number of side quests that really stand to pad the games length and don't add to the overall story that much. Trying to complete all these side quests is what caused to me pick and drop the game several times over the years. However, I was happy to complete it and feel I got my money's worth. A great series and some day I will move on to the Pre-Sequel someday. June 9, 2016
  • Dragon Age Inquisition - (8/10) - The Dragon Age series is one of my favorite gaming experiences. From the first one fighting as the Hero of Ferelden against the 5th Blight, to surviving the mage rebellion of Kirkwall as Hawke, to finally leading an mighty Inquisition to defeat one of the first darkspawn, Dragon Age has one of the best story telling in gaming today. Of course, each of the games has had shortcoming and quirks but The 3rd in the series was easily the most ambitious and over designed. My chief complaints were the resource gathering which is great in concept but tedious in practice and the horrible "consolely" controls that nerfed keyboard and mouse controls. But beyond that AWESOME GAME. So many lands to visit. So many creatures and Dragons to fight. The story is fairly tight as well. I felt a purpose to my actions as I closed rifts and settled disputes throughout Thedas. However, at the end I have to say the ending was less satisfying as the ending for Mass Effect 3 which gave your party a more intimate time with you. But in the end, this is a great game and I'm excited for the next installment. Just crossing my fingers that they develop it with PC first controls. June 10, 2016
  • Grand Theft Auto V - (10/10) - A true masterpiece of our time. A world game engine so real that companies who are programming AI to drive cars use this game to test on. I don't have much more to say other than I played the heck out of this game and got my money's worth and more. This game is a rare gem. August 31, 2016
  • Oxenfree - (6/10) - I have a LOVE with a little hate relationship with this game. So the love part is that IS a really great game and you can see how much attention, care, and creativity the development team put into this. The writing, voice acting, art, music, and sounds design are all top notch. A special nod goes to the radio noise when scanning the channels. However, the little hate goes with the game engine itself. I found navigating the island to be tedious. The exploration became a chore for some reason and I'd lose interest and stop playing. And when I came back to it, I had a very difficult time remembering what I was supposed to be doing next. I also had a problem with the game freezing up often causing me to reboot which really killed the momentum. I know the developer wanted to take you out of cut scenes where you passively watch the dialogue but they weren't able to give you something better to do while you watched the dialogue. I don't know what they could have done different. This just didn't work for me. But overall its a great experience and I would have enjoyed the story more if I hadn't had the problem with the engine crashes and moving around the island. Still, overall a fun time and you should buy it. September 23, 2016
  • Punch Club - (8/10) - This is a pretty neat throwback kind of game with tons of references to 80s and 90s action hero tropes. I enjoyed the gameplay with is slowly building up your character and taking on harder and harder fights and the game seems to have a sense of progression that most games of this design do not. I found it a nice relaxing game to play with no need to twitch based game play. In the end however I was surprised how abrupt the game ended but I won't spoil it for those who want to play it. Overall, I think it is a great game with a little replay-ability in that you can try to beat the game with the three different build types. November 11, 2016
  • Batman - The Telltale Series - (9/10) - What a pleasant surprise this game turned out to be. When I saw Telltale was taking on a Batman game I didn't assume they would break with the Batman cannon or make Bruce Wayne into a fleshed out character. He has always been a sideshow to the main event of Batman but in the game I found the choices that Bruce had to make far more interesting. Overall, I'm really happy I played this and am excited for whenever Season 2 is released. Another win for Telltale. Congrats! December 27, 2016
Abandoned
  • Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth - (4/10) I was excited to be getting a spiritual successor to Alpha Centaur however after trying to enjoy the game through a few play throughs over the past year and a half I just can't even get enough interest to start game. It is a bitter disappointment but maybe you just grow out of certain types of games and maybe I've grown out of civilization games. The game never hooked me and I didn't feel compelled into pushing farther with. Feb. 29, 2016

The thread is two and a half weeks old. That's given people a chance to stake their territory, so I think it is probably time to open the thread for general discussion.

Call of Juarez: Gunslinger completed. I decided to take redemption over revenge. Unfortunately, I'd have to play the last level over again to see the Revenge option. Off to YouTube!

I finished Overlord: Raising Hell last week. I had a lot of fun with it, and will play the sequel (which is already in my Steam library) sometime soon. It was a very good game, and was just one layer of polish away from being great.

Tonight I wrapped up The Talos Principle. It is a first/third person puzzle game using the kind of logic and trial-and-error that Portal did, leading to a very similar mechanical feel, although with a much different atmosphere, relying heavily on exploring the philosophy of life and death, along with an undertone of both tragedy and hope. It was a great game.

I want to finish Talos Principle but I got stuck somewhere on puzzle and didn't want to cheat. Is the ending memorable/worth it?

To me it was. I thought it was a great wrap-up to everything that had been set up.
