Think Team Fortress 2 with thirty or so classes and Blizzard polish and you'll be close to what this is.

I graciously accepted anyway. The rugrats may give me time to play and I can always sneak in after they go to bed.

EDIT: sorryf or the late response, work and all that.

10 minutes to go for the early access beta, folks. If you want to play with me, I'm Butterknife#1748.

Also, I've got an extra friend key, so first person to ask for it here with at least 10 posts on their history gets it. Assuming I check back on the forums sometime soon. ;)

Open beta is going on for this now. I would highly recommend giving this one a chance, I have put in about 7 hours in the past couple of days and it is really fun. If you liked Team Fortress 2, you will like this.

Another rousing endorsement here. IceBear's early access code has gone to great use, and I'm also enjoying it immensely. There is a mode to have your character change with each death and I find it frustrating, educational, and sometimes extremely rewarding. I'm getting a good overall skillset and having a blast along the way. When I want to feel better about myself, I join a game vs the AI and pick whatever my team is lacking, current favorite Zenyatta the healer. Fast rounds, fun characters, way fun. Thank you, IceBear!

I just played a couple of rounds against AI so far, but this was fun. A friend urged me to try it for a long time, but so many games and so few gaming-hours...

Basically a prettier version of TF2. I liked the battleborn beta better. That was at least interesting to play.

I played the last beta for maybe an hour. This time I loaded up the new one, hit quick match, chose Bastion, and pulled a 23-kill streak on the first match. I then quit. Leave while I'm ahead before I get my ass handed to me and learn humility. I'll play more later.

I confirm once again that capture and pure PvP missions are beyond my fps skills. They do have payload/escort missions which is what I play exclusively in TF2. I'll have to give that a try.

-- There's no way to choose your play mode, at least in the beta. All you get is random map quickplay or bots. Given the musings of some random online weirdos it may be that way in the retail game too. If so I'll not be buying this one.

I gave this a shot last night. I randomly selected a character, Symmetra. I didn't die once in 12 or so matches (except when I fell off the map), my team never lost a round, and I won a few commendation votes. Either that character is way OP or I kept getting very lucky with my team assignments.

I probably need a PC upgrade if I'm going to keep playing though, I was getting down to 10 FPS in some areas. I guess Symmetra is pretty good for laggy/choppy play.

You probably played against the ai... its very very hard to die in those unless you jump into 5 guys.

The game itself is very well made, with a lot of champs who make other champs life hell.

The game looks nice and plays well enough for me to seriously consider buying this. It's been that fun when i get 2 or 3 friends together and we actually work like a team.

Yeah, it wasn't training. I was chatting and getting votes. I did wonder at first but it changed servers a few times and was definitely with live human players.

Not saying whether it was or was not a full on PvP match but just wanted to point out; one of the modes is "bot" team vs. human team in which case your team mates will vote at the end of each match. I will also say I have found that the medium and hard levels of the humans vs. AI matches are not a complete cake walk. The AI doesn't miss and will absolutely focus fire on high threat targets to take them down.

I was going to say the first half of this. You get votes for human team vs ai team, and they are.... at the lowest setting... nigh impossible to lose to. Medium and hard, not so bad... But that first human vs human game you get a real idea how chaotic it can be...

I'm pleasantly surprised at how addicting this game is. It's got that "potato chip" factor where you can't have just one match. Currently having a blast playing as Mercy and Roadhog. A friend of mine has also taken to playing Mercy since she reminds him of the medic from TF2 days. I think the similarities are hurting him though because he's too close to the players he's healing (Mercy has a long healing distance and can heal through walls) and he doesn't take advantage of Mercy's "flight" ability to keep from dying. The end result is I end up relying on Roadhog's ability to heal himself more often than not.

When he's not on though I go to town as Mercy and zip all over the place, healing folks and saving up her ultimate for when 2 or more heroes are down.

It was definitely human on both sides.

I've since played a lot of more competitive games and I think it was just bad players my first time through. In general, people are getting better, or least I'm playing with and against better players. Does it match roughly based on your level?

Fun game, I'm most likely going to pre-order. Like I said above though, my PC can barely squeak by on this one.

It's 10pm somewhere...

FWIW, check the news in the Battle.net application:

"The Overwatch Beta has concluded and is now offline..."

Also:
The Open Beta will conclude in all regions for all players on Monday, May 9 at 10:00 a.m. PDT (5:00 p.m. UTC).

I found the problem. It was 10am NOT 10pm like I thought I read...
We couldn't be more grateful. So, as a small way of saying "thank you" to our community and the millions of players who've logged in so far, we will be extending the Open Beta by 1 day on all platforms. This means the beta will now conclude on May 10 at 10:00 a.m. PDT in all regions.

So is the only reason to keep playing...besides the gameplay....cosmetic rewards? No growth in power, no neat new shiny weapon? POwers stay the same, just as you win and progress...the only rewards are...cosmetic? Am I right on the take on that? So there is no loot treadmill? No player power growth?

Nope, which I think is awesome. It means that, mechanics-wise, all players remain on an equal footing. Blizzard, unlike DICE or [various COD developers] will actively work to keep the classes balanced.

Note that I didn't say it was balanced. I said that Blizzard would work to keep it balanced. They are famous for the constant tweaking of their multiplayer games.

That's not necessarily unbalanced. Play of the game rewards multikills, which Bastion excels at. K/D doesn't always decide wins/losses.

I own the crap out of Bastion with Pharaoh.
It's 109 first team All-Americans.
It's a college football record 61 bowl appearances.
It's 34 bowl victories.
It's 24 Southeastern Conference Championships.
It's 15 National Championships.

At some places they play football. At Alabama we live it.

If I'm Bastion I try to keep a roof over my head. In a corner. Where I can see anyone coming in my FOV.

With the right placement, he's hard to beat. Self-healing and that much damage output is not a bad combo.

Stairs. I like to plant him hull-down. He makes a very small target that way, and can shoot people in the feet under the floating payload.

Ooh that's good. I'm stealing that, I can think of a few places where that would be good. I also like the floating moving platforms, people get confused for a second and sometimes that's all it takes.

We already have a glut of games that are all about the "quest for better stuff". The problem I see with those games is that, due to my limited gaming time, I end up falling behind my friends who have more gaming time, which means they end up having better stuff, which means they want to play harder levels to get even better stuff, thus rendering me impotent when we do play - or feeling like the ugly duckling who has to beg to be pulled along in the quest for better stuff.

In a game like Overwatch I can be assured that no matter how much more they play, they will end up with no better stuff than I do. And that in the end it will be player skill and teamwork that matters.
