So it it just me, or does the scale of the Ghost seem off? I pictured it about the size of the Falcon, but that ship is HUGE.

Yeah, a lot of people feel that way but they're pretty good about keeping to scale for that game (Armada plays more loosely with scale) so I think it really is supposed to be that big. I think it's mainly because everyone just assumed it was about the size of the Falcon. I guess the Phantom is a hint -- the bulk of its body is about the size of an X-wing, and I couldn't picture the Falcon being big enough to have something that size dock into its rear.

I haven't watched much of Star Wars Rebels, but thinking about it all you see of the Falcon is that common area, some engine spaces, the turrets and the cockpit. There are a lot more internal rooms on the Ghost.

In case anyone was looking, the Force Awakens core set is available as a May 4th sale at Cool Stuff for $18, which is about as good of a price as you will find. Unless Target puts them on clearance again. If I were to buy only 1 core set it would probably be the force awakens one, the damage deck is just much better.

Are you mixing original minis with the Force Awakens ships? Since moving I haven't been playing but I can't pass up a sale and El Guapo has inspired me and I'll probably break out some ships and try to play with my daughter again.

Yeah they mix just fine and are created to mix. The new x-wing single blister pack comes with stuff to improve the original x-wing for instance. The resistance plays with the rebels, the first order with the imperials. If you don't mix then then you only have T70 X-wings vs FO tie fighters.

Excellent! Heard about the improved damage deck so naturally I bought two sets for convenience. Since my daughter loved The Force Awakens I'm hoping this is the thing to drag her into playing again.

Thanks for the heads up. I'm thinking that I'm going to hold off on this until her birthday in July (and then weigh it against other presents). Looks like Amazon has this for $26 generally.

Also, are their recommended expansion pairings to keep things balanced? Like, if I wound up buying Ghost, finding out what a good balancing ship on the imperial side is so that the match isn't unbalanced?

The other potential issue is whether my daughter and I could finish a game of this before her 3 year old brother comes in and kicks everything over.

If you get into really competitive play you'll start getting into whether swarms or fat turret builds fit the current meta better, or whether Brobots can stand up to an Aces build, or plenty of other jargon i'm surely butchering.

For casual play, just pick the ships you like the best because they look cool or you like the characters or whatever. I think the game is the most fun if you don't overthink it.

Yeah I agree. Mostly just pick ships you like and want to play with. If you want though check here before making a purchase in terms of if they will be balanced. We can help out. For instance if you buy the falcon for the rebels, your thought might be to buy the shuttle for the imperials since they are both big ships and iconic, but the shuttle is difficult to master while the falcon is beginner proof.

Good rule of thumb is imperial depend on numbers while rebels depend on hull and shields, though there are exceptions on both sides.

Also new ships announced today... kind of. I think both of these have been heavily expected by X-wing enthusiasts. The falcon with a complete dish, and Poe's X-wing. Looks fantastic, now we just need the special forces from The Force Awakens, guess we will see when that gets released.

Shockingly it says the sculpt for the falcon is new, so is the pain job, not just the sensor array.

I am trying not to buy more than 1 big ship and 2 small ships, but hopefully they still have playmats.

I am certain this is to move stock before Fantasy Flight brings down the distribution hammer. Makes me sad.

Had a fun game of X-wing in the last month. No time for a good long write up, but it was one of my first ever 3 player games. I played as the empire, my brother as scum, and my wife as rebels. I lost gloriously, and Boba Fett cleaned house with my brother winning. It was a blast of a game.

Image
Early scuffle with all three players getting involved.

Also there has been quite a big of content announced, including 2 ships from the upcoming movie Rogue One, a rebel tie fighter from Rebels (not sure how I feel about that), and 2 ships from The Force Awakens:

Image

Also they have announced that the new Falcon from Force Awakens has engine glow, finally.

Also my wave 9 stuff should finally be arriving next week which means I have even more ships to get to the table...

Man, I still have not managed to get this game to the table again. That's several months now. Disappointing. The ships and lists I want to try out keep stacking up.

Coming up with new lists is a lot of fun but I need to get them to the table. Perhaps this week finally. Planning on starting one of the campaigns from one of the huge ships. Most likely the Gozanti cruiser. I have enjoyed the missions a great deal but I have not done one of the campaigns yet.

In the news department... finally FFG has risen the Scum faction to be epic, with a variant of the gozanti cruiser:

Image

Looks fantastic, also comes with a nice strong boost to a previously useless scum ship, the scyk. Epic is my favorite format, so I am very much looking forward to scum being a viable option in Epic. I like each side to have an epic ship when playing.

Started the Gozanti cruiser campaign yesterday. So far it is a lot of fun. Did just the first mission so far, looking forward to the next couple of missions.

I played as the Imperial squad. My squad was:

Goazanti class cruise with docking clamps, shield technician, dual laser turret.

Loaded underneath were:
2x Omega Specialist (Tie/SF Fighter ie. special forces Tie Fighters from The Force Awakens)
Cool hand, sensor cluster, lightweight frame and special ops training.

The rebel squad opposing me was:

Rey in the millenium falcon
- Trick shot, Bistan, millenium falcon title

Bodhi Rook in a U-Wing
- Jyn erso, pivot wing

Braylen Stramm in an ARC-170
- Alliance overhaul

The first mission on the campaign starts with 3 satellite tokens spread around a 3'x3' mat. The wing leader of the rebels (in this case Rey) must pick up all three satelites and escape without being destroyed while the Imperials only goal is to destroy the Wing Leader.

We started in opposite corners, and Rey quickly made her way to the first satellite token, picking it up before I could even get close enough to take a shot at her. The Arc-170 and the U-Wing positioned themselves in my way attacking my Goazanti cruiser. I dropped one of my Special Fores TIe Fighters off and dropped some damage on the U-wing, but was unable to hit the Falcon.

Image
The Special Forces Tie hitting the U-wing while trying to get to the Falcon

The Falcon turned the corner to make a run at the second satellite, but the Arc-170 was stuck and turned away from the fight. Turned out to be a big turning point in the game. I released my second special forces Tie which hammered the Falcon.

Image
Chasing Rey in the Falcon down the side of the mat.

The U-wing took an inadvertent turn and ended up being a casualty of the Gozanti Cruiser and with the Arc-170 effectively out of the battle as well the Falcon withered to the blows of all three ships. The Falcon was destroyed shortly after getting the second satellite.

Image
Two Tie/SF working on finishing off the wing leader. The U-wing is about to get destroyed.

Overall it was a very close mission. Rey was just about to turn the corner and take down the side to escape. But before doing so the 3 Imperial ships got lucky with big hits.

Overall it was a great game. Looking forward to continuing the campaign!

Mission 2 of the Gozanti cruiser campaign in the books.

I continued as the empire, my opponent continued as the rebellion.

Imperial List:

Gozanti Cruiser
- Emperor palpatine (powerful card which allows you to turn one dice per round to any face you want)
- Docking clamps (allows ships to be docked)
- Turret (gives the cruiser a way to attack)

Tempest Squadron Pilot (Tie Advanced)
- TIE X1 (allows very cheap system)
- Advanced Targeting Computer (Gives you an extra critical hit as long as you keep a a target lock, and you don't spend the target lock, very powerful, only for Tie Advanced)
- Twin Ion Engine Mk II (Gives all banks green status)

Darth Vader (Tie Advanced)
- Tie X1
- Advanced Targeting Computer
- Twin Ion Engine Mk II
- Squad Leader

Rebel List:

Rey (Millennium Falcon)
- C-3PO (lets you guess the odds of getting hit for more evades)
- Smuggling Compartment (allows an illicit upgrade)
- Burnout Slam (Single use illicit slam)
- Millennium Falcon Title (gives evade action)

Poe Dameron (T-70 X-Wing)
- BB-8 (free barrel rolls)
- Primed Thrusters
- Black One Title

Zeb Orrelios (Stolen Tie Fighter)

Lists were made primarily just to be interesting, especially using the rebel tie fighter for the first time. I'm not a huge fan of the idea of the rebel tie fighter, not because it is such a big deal since stolen ships are a big part of Star Wars lore, but because it takes a unique ship from the empire and gives it to the rebels. Sure there are no generic pilots but... I still find it disappointing. The pain job is beautiful for what they are trying to represent though, have to give credit for that.

Rey was the Wing Leader again this mission. Her mission was to weaken the cruiser to low health and then get within range 1 of the Cruiser and then roll the dice to attempt to board, then once boarded stay alive for a round. Either that or force the cruiser to flee the battlefield.

The imperial mission was simple- destroy Rey

Deconstruction of the Cruiser would lead to a draw.

We started across the mat from each other, and instantly the Rebel ships flew full speed at my Cruiser. I kept my two tie advanced docked for the first round with plans to release the second round at range one with no ability for the rebels to react and put them in prime position. Some initial sparring from afar was sucesful as I hit the Falcon with my turret and Poe Dameron landed a couple of hits on the Cruiser.

Image
The initial approach. No suitableness to either approach, head to head approach by both sides.

By round two the rebel ships which were getting as close as possible without being in danger of being run over managed to land strong hits. But the ships were in perfect position for my two Tie Advanced to be released and be in range 1 of the falcon. Both Tie Advanced were released and in perfect position. Darth Vader landed major hits, 4 successful critical hits against the falcon with the Emperor's help. The Tie Tempest managed to land 3 hits as well (C-3P0 managed to guess the odds correctly). But then the rebels did a surprising move, they focused on Darth Vader rather than the cruiser, and Vader was destroyed in a single round. A devastating loss to the Empire.

Image
The perfect placement of the Tie Advanced ships in position for range 1 damage.

The next round was a huge scrum, rebel ships narrowly avoided being run over, and the Falcon took serious damage, being down to 1 health only by the end. The Empire was close to victory. Knowing that the rebels would need two rounds to get in position for boarding and then survive a round I knew I had it in the bag.

Image
The scrum, and the very lucky rebels for not being run over.

With only one health left on the Falcon I thought it was in the bag, but Poe Demeron landed all hits and the millennium falcon landed a critical hit... which turned into two hits, and in a perfect roll of dice the Rebels managed to destroy the Gozanti Cruiser. The rebels had realized as I had that they could not win, and instead decided to play for a draw, and they were successful. Since both Poe and Rey have very high pilot skills the Tie Advanced I had left and the Gozanti did not get to fire another shot.

Image
Perfect dice rolling with a trailing Falcon and Poe left the Gozanti dead.

Really fun mission, close as could be. One more mission in the campaign, we will see who comes out on top.

Enjoying the cinematic version of the game a lot right now.

I have this, but never get to play it (I rarely get to play two player games due to having too many people when I board game.)

When I first picked it up, I also picked up a set of asteroids (ok, a big back of lava rocks for a BBQ.) This bag has been sitting in my bedroom for three years now, and I'd like to take out what I need and toss the rest. Should I get deeper into the game at some later date, is there any real reason to hang on to more than what is needed to cover the asteroid templates in the base game? Should I keep more?

Keep 10. In epic 3 v 3 battles (I have a full set with duplicates) we'll throw down 1 obstacle per player and 2 per player in smaller matches. Later sets change the size of the obstacle templates.

FYI. There isn't really a limit to how many players you can have as long as you have enough ships.. We did 2V2 when we played regularly. It can be ramped up..

Agreed. Just set a point limit and go. You can do teams, free for all, there are tons of different options for how to approach it. It really is a sandbox system you can do whatever you want with it.

BTW, for those interested, lots of new things coming out for it still. I'm pretty excited about some of the new options, less so for others. I don't get to play it as much anymore as I used to, but I do still get it to the table occasionally, and I'm looking forward to the new stuff.

My C-ROC epic ship for scum arrives later this week.

Image

Excited to get that to the table.

Wave eleven was announced a little while back too, I'm slightly less excited about it than pretty much any wave prior, but it has some interesting looking things to offer at least.

Image

And the first scum related pack of repaints with ship "patches" was also announced in the last couple of months:

Image

Looks good to me, so looking forward to it as well.

I just need to find a way to play it more.

Managed to squeeze in (funny calling it a squeeze when it took several hours) an epic game of X-Wing. My scum C-ROC cruiser arrived a little while ago and I have been just itching to get in my first game of Scum Epic. My opponent and I don’t get to play X-Wing as often as we like, so instead we both created lists that were more about ships we don’t use often, or combinations we just wanted to try out rather than what is most competitive. Honestly this is normally how we play.

So my scum list-

C-ROC Cruiser with
- Jabba the hutt
- Heavy laser Turret
- IG-RM Thug droids
- Quick- release cargo locks
- Insatiable Worrt title

Constable Zuvio (Quadjumper)
-Cluster mines
-Scavanger crane
-Tractor array

IG88-A
IG88-B
IG88-C
-All three with Arc Caseter, Glitterismt, and IG-2000 title. (All 3 share their unique pilot abilities, been wanting to try out more than 2 for a while)

Inaldra (M3-A Scyk)
-Heavy scyk title
-Pulsed ray shied
-Heavy laser cannon

Sabine Wren (Lancer-craft pursuit craft)
-Burnout slam, glitterism

Zelous recruit (Protecterate starfighter) x 2

My friend took the following Imperial fleet-

Raider Class Corvette
-Hot-shot pilot
-Concussion missiles
-Ordnance tubes

Gozanti class crusier
-Dual laser turret, docking clamps

Kylo Ren (Upsilon-class shuttle)
-Determination
-Weapons engineer
-Weapons guidance
-Targetting synchronizer
-Kylo ren’s shuttle title

Zeta Specialist (TIE/SF Fighter)

Duchess (Tie Striker)
-Adaptive Ailerons

Omicron Group Pilot (Lambda-class shuttle)
-Darth vader
-Hull upgrade

Academy pilot (TIE Fighter) x2
-Both docked with the Gozanti cruiser

The match started out fairly standard for an epic game. Both sides with ships moving towards each other rather predictably. The 3 IG-88 droids all went together to take on the Imperial Raider, which was assisted by the Tie Striker “Duchess”. On the other side of the battle the C-Roc cruiser went for both of the shuttles, with the lancer-craft working along the periphery with its arc set for broadsides into the battle, while the quadjumper and 2 protectorate starfighters attempted to get close as quick as possible to cause damage. Then I snuck my Scyk Interceptor around behind the Gozanti hoping it would largely be ignored as a little nuisance with bigger fish to fry at the time.

Image
The sides race towards each other.

The plan worked very well against the gozanti cruiser. The Scyk was able to get behind the Gozanti and alsmot single handedly destroy it with its heavy laser cannon while the Gozanti was focused on the C-Roc.

Image
My heavy Scyk staying behind the Goazanti to geed results.

The Death shuttle (With Vader) destroyed itself but in the process managed to destroy one of the protectorate starfighters and do a lot of damage to the Lancer Craft as well.

Image
My Protectorate starfighter attempting to hide behind an asteroid to hit Vader's shuttle, to no success as it was finished off.

On the other side of the battle things were a little less successful for me as the 3 IG-88 droids managed to do damage to the Imperial raider, but between its two primary weapon fires and ordnance tubes each turn it managed to tear through two of my IG88 ships, while the third did survive and slipped behind the Raider, where the Raider couldn’t get any shots off. Things were fairly tight for the entire game.

Image
The Raider managed to split the IG88 ships and destroy two of the three.

Just before the Gozanti was destroyed by the pesky Scyk interceptor it managed to deal crippling blows to the C-ROC by both its own turret, and with its two TIE Fighters which were deployed at range 1. Eventually the C-ROC made its way across the battle to land a few good shots on the Imperial Raider while Kylo Ren slowly followed and destroyed the Lancet. The lone surviving IG88 almost finished off the Raider before Kylo Ren finally made its way over to protect the Raider. Eventually only the pesky Scyk was left who had essentially survived to this point by being ignored. But with it being the only threat left, it wasn’t able to sneak behind any more ships and was finished off.

Image
Near the end of the game when the C-ROC took a leap across the board to attempt to assist the IG88 with the Imperial Raider.

In the end the the battle came down to a crippled Raider which only needed one hit left and a damaged Kylo ren getting a good round off on the Scyk before I could get behind the less mobile ships and use its heavy laser cannon. Fun game as always, and I’m happy to have the Scum faction join the ranks of the epic game.

End of the line for my scum fleet.

I'm sure you hardcore fans already know, but I figured I'd post the announcement of the Second Edition version of X-Wing coming in September.
Today, Fantasy Flight Games is excited to announce the next evolution of your interstellar dogfights: X-Wing™ Second Edition, a game of daring space combat for two players! With three fully assembled and beautifully pre-painted ships, and all the cards, movement tools, tokens, and dice that you need to get flying with the second edition, the X-Wing Second Edition Core Set is the perfect way to introduce yourself to the new mechanics or experience X-Wing for the first time.

Second edition is going to get some flack from fans and some people who have spent thousands on the game (like... maybe I have...) but honestly it is time. The lists and fixes and FAQ are getting completely unwieldy and it was about time for a reboot. I wasn't even sure if I was playing some stuff right anymore with the size of the eratta.

The way they are doing it makes a lot of sense because the squad cost of different cards will be controlled by the app which means they can readjust costs without doing refits and repeat launches etc. It's very smart. I love it.

The conversion kits are also a nice touch. Sure they are not cheap but when you realize how much you get from it it seems like a pretty good deal, and with how they are fixing the ships it's like getting 50 ships released at once.

Other things I love about it is the splitting off officially of the resistance and first order as separate factions. For one thing they feel very different and it was weird having luke fly with poe etc. But, it also opens up another option for more factions... the prequel era ships. Now while many people are triggered by any mention of the prequels there are some cool ships that would be really fun to get into the game, and it has been heavily discussed that there is no good way to fit them into existing factions so... who knows... maybe we see them in the future.

Wow, people who didn't invest heavily get screwed over with the conversion kits. You can't order it per-ship, you have to get enough stuff to convert about 40 ships at once, and only a specific combination. I happen to have one more TIE fighter than one conversion kit handles. For the 14 ships I own, I'd have to pay $200 to convert them, and 90% of the stuff I'd be paying for would be parts for ships I don't own. That is more than what I paid for the ships initially.

I'm glad I'm not actively playing this game.

Except nobody is getting screwed. The game you bought still works exactly as it did the day you bought it. Now to upgrade to 2.0 won't be cheap but if you weren't planning on continuing to buy ships (sounds like you weren't) and you don't play competitively (sounds like you don't) there is zero reason to upgrade to 2.0. the conversion kits are clearly aimed at people who have been collecting the ships all along. Honestly it's a much better gesture than a lot of 2.0 versions give. I have to give ffg props for thinking of the big fans of the game and not leaving us behind.

I'm only buying one of each conversion kit. Sure I own 8 x-wings but outside of the rare epic game I never use them all. I like more varied lists anyways rather than spamming one ship type so I figure that's the best way to handle it.

Also there is a new damage deck which means you need the new core set to play 2.0.

Personally, no, I'm not. I'm not representative of every player who didn't invest big, though. I'm sure there are plenty of others who play casually at FLGSs who are either going to have to double their investment or not be able to continue.

After years of buying GW products, I'm a little intolerant of companies who invalidate expensive lines of products every few years. It's a shitty business model unless you're the kind of person rolling in cash.

The game has become unwieldy. The eratta pages and pages long. The number of corrections over and over again to bring ships back into relevance was getting crazy. Honestly if you flew an x-wing it was getting to the point where you would have 7 upgrade cards attached, not to do something cool, but to make it viable. That's crazy. It is time for a reset. Almost all players that are up to date with the game agree. It is time. Players who aren't up to date... Hard to understand why they would care. Honestly people who think it wasn't getting out of hand with fixes and eratta haven't been paying attention. Which is fine. But 2.0 isn't necessary for them. If they were playing even at their flgs they would be encountering The same issues everyone else was encountering.

Is ffg in it to make money? Obviously. But it's hard to call it much of a money grab when literally all of our old ships can be used. It's actually a pretty decent approach to it.

Most importantly though for casual players who are complaining about this is that all of the past products are not invalidated. That's the part I don't understand about the complaining. Nothing changed overnight with the ships everyone had. If they still love that game more it's still there. If they were playing outside their home or with people at stores the last few years then they know that the game was getting long in the tooth and that there were serious imbalances that could never be fully retrofitted (hello turrets and weak ordnance). The only answer honestly is a relaunch. So either this game these people supposedly love tons and this change hurts so much would gradually drift off and die or it needed to be rebooted and retooled.

The changes are fantastic honestly. It fixes sooooo many problems with the game. The gut reaction of being upset I understand. But for anyone that has played the game significantly once you start looking over the changes you can't help but be excited because they appear to be fixing nearly every little quibble players have had with the game.

On the live stream they hinted that smaller conversion kits may be coming out in future waves, so even that's not ruled out yet.

The rule changes may be a good thing. They often are. But six years is too soon to invalidate an extremely expensive product line unless you have an affordable option to let people use older components. $50 kits designed for people with thousands invested is not that.

I would not object if they put up print-and-play conversions at a dollar a pop, or let you customize your kits and buy exactly the ships you need. If you write the rules in such a way that they need this much repair so quickly, then you do what you can to mitigate the impact on your players. But then again, this is FFG, and they're known for very pricey components to begin with.

Yeah I understand where you are coming from. Overall I am really happy with how they are handling it but still I see where you are coming from.

I think they made some design mistakes early on that have been costing them over and over again. Balancing new stuff constantly is an extremely difficult task. It's the reason that Magic only allows a couple of years to be in play at any time. Balancing new stuff with everything ever released is obviously a monumental task. Some of the stuff should have been play tested a bit better, but a lot of the mistakes were things that seemed like a good idea and were even balanced at that time. A good example is the Falcon. It was very strong on release, but was still beaten by swarms of tie fighters. It seemed like the turret was an ok idea, it was just one ship after all and it could still be beaten by high numbers of ships. But... it was the path down turrets that ended up being a ruinous path. It was balanced at the time, but as more ships were released it became obvious it was turning into a real issue. And without a relaunch there is no way to put that cat back into the box. They tried. But... there it was.

So yes I really hope they are more careful with new additions this time and don't have them drastically change the game with 2.0. The app should help a lot with this as overpowered things can simply be costed better.

There are other things that were balanced initially that eventually became auto includes that were a problem. An example is push the limit. This upgrade became so incredibly ubiquitous. They already have said they are not releasing it for the 2.0 version, which is a smart move. Auto include upgrades are boring.

But yeah as hard as it is to balance new stuff with 50 ships already released, they need to take more cautious steps in the future or 3.0 will be around in less than 10 years. Hopefully they learned their lessons.

I think you present some good options about making it more affordable. Would be nice if they did that. I could see them releasing smaller upgrade packs, but print and play at home they will never do, not their style. But yeah it would be nice. Not a bad point.

I have played enough editioned games that I certainly understand the need for rules revamps!

Again, like I said, a lot of this comes from my experience with Games Workshop and their habit of sometimes releasing new editions every four or five years written to specifically invalidate all of their previous line (which was already expensive) and require repurchasing everything if you wanted to play in any recognized venue (including your FLGS.) Of course that was GW, who were famously consumer-unfriendly. I don't know if they've gotten any better in the years since I waved them off or not. It makes me extremely leery of anything that has that kind of impact as it is so, so easy for companies to abuse. Especially once they see the burst of revenue it brings in.

I get that. FFG certainly has been known to do some money grabbing. C3P0 only came in an epic ship! Things like that. But then they also these fixes with later expansions and give 4 copies of the fix. They are somewhere between the good guys like stonemeier games and the less good guys like gw. But they certainly have purposely made x-wing in a manner that people will dump money on it.

I am starting to get into phase V with the second edition news. =)

Mechanically the changes sound cool, anything that makes the flying matter more than list-fidgetry and min/maxing is something I will wholeheartedly embrace... and the 50 money updatebox is not a monetary issue.

But I have been pretty horrified at the thought of getting even more clutter (or just throwing away all the 1e cards/tokens and whatnot) into my already overcrowded gaming boxes. Oh well, guess I will slim down my feet to be just Rebels, no urgent need to buy also the Empire update box. Probably will just play a few of my favourite Rebel ships in 2e with my main gaming mates in our rented gaming cellar and leave rest (and Empire) for random pickups with other mates back home... Or something.
