On the temp server.. IF you're seeing this..

Post by FishPants »

If you are seeing this, we are on the temp server -- all traffic hitting that.

TTL is at half an hour so people should be trickling in again, keep in mind more maintenance coming as I rebuild the physical server and get us off the hourly charged server.

In the meantime report weirdness here, I expect that email will be borked for a bit until I get reverse lookups sorted.

I'm happy to report I'm getting email notifications and reverse lookup is squared away.. I'm pleasantly surprised so far. Doing a full backup and copy down to my local machine as we speak.. Once that's done, I will be nuking our physical server and starting to install ESX and then the host VM.

Thanks for all the tips guys, I would never have thought to install a hypervisor first -- that's going to make my life a lot easier in the future I think.

This may be the first time in my IT career, but I think I made the right call?

Server up on temp cloud server - great!

Reinstall physical server (ubuntu to test) things get ugly through install script...

I go do other things, hear my phone ding an hour later.. Server had a "fault", tech went and pulled the server, replaced the power supply and the server resumed...... We had a bad power supply, but didn't reboot! Yowza.

TL;DR We moved to a VM, physical reinstall failed due to bad power supply - we dodged a bullet.

I won't be doing a VM after all -- the only ESX template offered is ancient, and I don't want to deal with HyperV.. I'm pretty happy with the virtualmin process for recovery.

These days I need less pizza, more kale. Please don't mail me kale, I don't like it even when it's fresh ;)

I'm going to do a backup test to the original server and see how it goes. If all goes well, anticipate another outage this week.

Can you do it on Friday? I'm off that day, and will be planing SOD. so my browsing is shot anyways :)

Thanks so much! And now for a stupid question. Will Tapatalk go back to working once complete?

I still can't on my Android version; every time I go to log in I get a "network error". Not sure where I need to go from here.

Same, I have also tried removing and re-adding OO to no avail. I guess my next step is a complete reinstall of Tapatalk.

I hardly ever use Tapatalk but I just tested it on my phone, works fine, didn't even ask me to re-login. Tapatalk version 6.5.5 on Galaxy S5.

Still not working on Android for me. Network error. I've tried removing the OO subscription and re-adding, logging out of Tapatalk then re-adding, and clearing data completely on Tapatalk (ie reinstalling), then re-adding OO. Same behavior regardless. Have rebooted phone for effect, too.

Ok I re-added the Tapatalk API key.. did that help any? It appeared to be blank in the config (odd, but whatever).

No dice. FWIW, the OO entry in Tapatalk (before logging in, where it gives you a summary of the forum) shows data current as of 4/28. So it appears that whatever happened that's affecting some of us probably happened on 4/28.

I turned the url back to http vs https in Tapatalk.. If that fixed it we can at least trace it back to the SSL cert. Let me know, otherwise I will open a case with Tapatalk.

I'm in now. I also just deleted data for the app again before trying that time, so I'm not 100% certain that your change to http fixed it, but that seems likely. Thanks!

At least I know what started it.. now I will open a case with that as the cause, and see what they say.

I submitted a ticket.. but I thought of something, I'm only supporting TLS1.0+ (SSL v2/v3 are not enabled). Wonder if your phone is old or the config doesn't have TLS enabled? That something you can check out?

Any chance you are using Adfree? Some folks online were mentioning a couple years ago that it would fix the connection error (had nothing to do with SSL tho):

directory.tapatalk.com

Add that to your whitelist which you manage through the Adfree web page.

It would have to be pretty ancient to not support TLS. Even 1.0 has been around a long while. Most browsers and sites are running 1.2.

edit: Wrote a bunch of crap, realized we were talking about an app and not a browser specifically, so removed it.

FYI. All afternoon I've been getting the following random error.:

Code: Select all

General Error
SQL ERROR [ mysqli ]

Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (111) [2002]

An sql error occurred while fetching this page. Please contact an administrator if this problem persists.
Using Chrome.
After a bit, I can refresh and the page comes up. My normal workflow:
Click the unread posts button, then open multiple topics I am interested in via new tabs.
Some of these tabs were getting the error, along with going to page 2 of the new posts.

Ya that's me I had some php scripts that needed updating. Should be all good for the time being, I'm cloning the database to another directory so I can test other board software without affecting this environment - as such posting/searching may take a tick or two longer.
