This has become especially relevant due to my new gaming PC. Mediocre performance was another reason I put vanilla on the shelf.
I think if haven't played XCOM2 already you might find all the options added with War of the Chosen completely overwhelming. That is just my guess though. There is a LOT more going on with the expansion.
The changes with the expansion are pretty expansive and there is a lot more going on, both tactically and strategically. The new Factions give you new soldier classes, but they also give you covert ops missions which give you more things for your soldiers to do. Oh, but your soldiers get tired now so be careful just how much you send your soldiers to do. In XCOM2 you could beat the game without ever using more than 6 soldiers. That is not going to happen in the expansion. Also, the Chosen are popping in on your missions making life difficult, Similar to the alien rulers, but more often and less powerful. They can attack the avenger and injure your engineers and scientists and steal your supplies. You need to hunt them down or they will ruin your campaign.
There are also new continent bonuses, new mission objectives, new mission mechanics, new skills, skill points will let you get abilities you skipped. Why choose between combat protocol and aid protocol, get both. Soldiers have a combat intelligence stat that impacts how many skill points they get. Smarter soldiers will get more skills.
I'm going to stop now. Can you tell I am excited for the expansion? My last campaign was Campaign 8, though I think one of those was an early loss on legend, so I have completed the game 7 times, one of them with the long war 2 mod. No game even comes close for me.
