This has probably been asked before. Is playing the base game worth it? I'm planning on playing the base game first and then another play through with the expansion.

I mean, I had a pretty good time with it.

Of course, if you've got the expansion, you may as well just play with the expansion.

way back when the base game was all we had, it was fun. But it is 2017 man, get with the times. Before I had played WOTC, I was saying it would be too complicated to start with it, but now that I have played through a couple time, I think you would be doing yourself a disservice by skipping the expansion on your first playthrough. Also, it's still pretty much the same game with the expansion, just better in most every way. Why wouldn't you want better?

Well, I gave up on my first game. Dark Event Timer was about to run out and I could not get through assaulting a second facility as the snake ruler was showing up. I hate the rulers.

My team was not strong enough to handle the Ruler and a Spectre plus all the other enemies.

Got to figure out how to get the rulers out of the WOTC game.

Right click and select properties from your steam library. On the DLC tab, deselect the Alien Hunters DLC.

that easy? I thought I read somewhere where they were in the WOTC game automatically. I think I will lose all the others stuff I like in that DLC.

Excellent. hate to lose the other content but the ruler are just not fun. Tried to find a mod that would alter their having a move after every action but could not find one.

Isn't it possible to just avoid attacking the facilities where they are stationed?

If you hover your mouse over a facility it will tell you if one of the rulers is there which has allowed me to go 100+ hours without encountering one.

I think I read that somewhere. I attacked a facility that was going to reduce the event timer, I had no choice but didn't see anything about a leader there. maybe I just wan't paying attention because I had to attack it.

I hated fighting the Alien Rulers, but killing them brought me great joy. Also, the RAGE suit and Serpent Armor have brought me great joy as well. Almost every Berserker panics when they see my Ranger in the RAGE suit (armed with weapons from the Assassin Chosen). I designed that Ranger after my wife and she is a beast. In game as well.

Yes, that is what I miss. I didn't mind the rulers too much when it was in the standard game but mixed into this one it is a real booger causing me to lose my first game before I could even get half way through. Guess it is better to lose early than invest nearly a whole game then lose.

I am really have bad luck with creating a soldier called Victoria Raverna. I played Ironman and the first time I reached the tech for armor upgrade and got Victoria Raverna (with plenty bonus stats from doing covert missions) killed wearing upgraded armor.

I decided to start a new game and also with ironman, Victoria Raverna died long before getting upgraded armor.

I started a new one with ironman and lower difficulty, during the rescue VIP and two other soldiers mission, got the VIP and two of the squad killed by muton's grenade and two badly hurt. Victoria Raverna was outside the blast area but got poisoned by a viper. Since I used my specialist to heal the two soldiers that survived the blast, I can't save her. So once again I lost Victoria Raverna before the upgraded armor. :(

I'm back from my trip and even though I've only been home four hours I've already started my first true WOTC campaign :D. I've uninstalled all DLC except WOTC so I don't have to deal with anything other than that. I did download and install the mod Capnbubs Accessories - WotC cause I like my soldiers to look like soldiers . I'm playing on Normal but with the doubled timers as I really don't seem to be able to complete a mission on the default timers

They nerfed Rapid Fire on Rangers (it now has a 5-turn cooldown), which was a staple for me, but I agree it was op so it's a good change. Also the addition of the the Lost zombies indirectly slightly nerfs Grenadiers (Grenades attract more zombies) and boosts Gunslingers (infinite ammo + Between the Eyes makes Lost missions trivial). All good changes imo. Hacking seem less important now, not sure how I like that but whatever.

The biggest complaint I have is the frequency in which my soldiers get "Tired". I guess the mechanic is there to force me to use my whole roster of soldiers, but it's penalty-driven game design and as such, not fun. It merely means I have to use underpowered troops on some missions instead of my regular badasses. I don't entirely understand what that change is supposed to fix, especially since the frequency of missions have skyrocketed now with the Chosen strongholds and Convert Action ambushes and rescue missions. So now I can't bring my Colonel on some missions because he has to have a 10-day nap from that last mission? That sucks.

There seems to be a balance issue with some mission types too. The new "Neutralize Field Commander" mission is quite a bit more difficult than other kinds of guerilla ops, and some retribution missions late-game are almost impossible to win on Legendary, when the Resistance troops takes low-damage pot-shots at Codexes, who promptly clones and massacres everyone. Or the Cryssalids who get activated faster by the Resistance troops, and therefore gets to start reproducing earlier and with more targets. Maybe I just need to learn how to play agains, but some of it seems excessive and maybe not play-tested fully.

All in all, it's a good expansion with a lot of new content (map types, mission types, new enemies, Covert Actions) but it needs another balance patch or two before it's perfect.

I totally agree. The tired mechanic seemed interesting at first, but by the end of the game it was just an annoyance, forcing me to sit and advance days to ensure I could get my major troops into key missions. I, too, was wondering what it was trying to fix - for me the game was always about building a crack team of special op guerilla fighters, not a large rotation army - so this felt out of sync with how I play the game. The only explanation I can see is that, since you can use ability points to make your troops into living gods, the tired mechanic is to prevent you from steamrolling through with a crack group.

Similarly, the negative conditions started out as an interesting idea, but quickly became either too annoying (everyone had them and the squad freaked out at the dropping of a leaf from a tree) or just another reason to advance time as you healed the condition.

The Lost are a PITA. They were fun for the first two missions, but became a chore very quickly. My biggest mistake was to allow a Dark Event called The Lost World to activate (I had a terrible choice of events to block and had to let it through). The event basically meant, for the rest of the game, that the Lost would show up in missions. Every mission (except for a few scripted ones). They never posed a threat, after you get Bladestorm and Reaper on Rangers, make a gunslinger, and get high-level armor they are no longer a threat. But they are a massive chore. And they count as enemies for missions where you have to clear the map. Which means that you have to kill the remaining Lost without summoning more Lost.

Long story short, unless you want a major annoyance, do not let The Lost World activate. I suspect fan complaints will lead to a mod removing that or a patch lowering the frequency the Lost show up in normal missions.

I quite like the Lost actually, especially once you learn how to use them against the aliens. I had a mission where one of the Chosen got beaten up pretty bad by a gang of Lost. It was the Hunter, so she had no way of dealing with melee attackers. She kept firing and missing with her sniper rifle on the point blank Dashers...

There is a mod called "Lost World Fix" or something like that, which (in a new campaign) makes it so that the Lost World dark event is cleared properly when it runs out. It also kind of works for existing campaigns, the dark event will get cleared next time you go to a mission with a "Lost" sitrep.

I actually don't believe that the spawned lost count for kill requirements on "clear the area" missions. The ones that started on the map do, but I've had missions come up with the victory screen even though there were still a few loose spawned zombies hanging around.

Agreed that they're more of a chore though, once the novelty wears off.

Now that I've killed all the alien rulers and chosen, I feel like I don't even need tier 3 weapons any more. I'm plowing through sectopods and gatekeepers with tier 2 stuff just fine: lead off with an acid grenade or two to strip the armor, then commence the whaling. I'd downloaded the "more squad size upgrades" mod, but I only really needed it at the beginning of the game, when I couldn't afford the squad size upgrades anyway. Think I'll just beeline for the end-game at this point. I've got three dark events in the pipe, two of which relate to the Chosen. I guess nobody told the aliens that we'd killed all the Chosen off.

Edit: To qualify re: the Lost, my main problem with them is the excessive number of unskippable "pod reveal" animations. They're sometimes scattered around the map in groups of two or three, but because they're so expendable there's a lot of those pods. So you get a nice thirty seconds of watching the stupid zombies shuffle around.

Wait... that event is supposed to clear?!?! :grund:

This stupid event makes missions take quite a bit longer than they should.

I strongly disagree. I love the idea that I can have a large roster of soldiers that I will actually get a chance to use. It gives me a chance to try out alternate character builds for use in specific circumstances.

Yeah, I'm with Apollo on this one (except for the alternate builds - you do what works son!). The game is easy enough as it is (on Commander, I am not a Legend). Allowing you to always bring your best would remove a lot of the challenge.

Heh, now that I've got three squads worth of majors and colonels, the "tired" mechanic doesn't really make a difference either. Of course, I wouldn't have gotten to this point if not for that mechanic - I'd have been using just the one squad of guys and it'd be pretty awful whenever I lose one. Between that and the covert ops allowing your guys to gain experience without going on field missions, I really feel like Firaxis has managed to address my main complaint about the base game, which is that if you lose your elite badass squad, you're screwed with no way to recover. Now there are multiple ways to recover and a built-in mechanic that forces you to spread out your XP.

Still managed to "partial success" a "neutralize Advent VIP" mission last night when a Sectopod blew up next to the car the VIP was hiding behind. Whoops. Well, better the VIP than one of my guys.

Edit: I love that some of my guys still have a "Fear of the Chosen" negative trait.

Article on Rock, Paper, Shotgun... Long War devs’ next game is XCOM at a galactic level
We already knew that Pavonis Interactive, the team behind the RPS-approved, game-changing Long War mods for XCOM and XCOM 2, were working on a complete new game of their own, but seeing as Long War 2 has been in the wild for a while now, I thought I’d catch up with ’em about Terra Invicta. This takes the essential XCOM concept – humans fending off an alien invasion – then expands it to a grand strategy scale...

Just finished my first play through on veteran and went through and only failed one mission and that may have been due to a bug. Had a retrieve data on the train mission and I could only assign rookies and lower ranked team members to the mission. All my mid to high ranked players were grayed out. They were not injured or tired. Reloading did not fix it so I went into the mission with a few rookies and sgts. All were wiped out but one who escaped before the mission was completed.

No sure what caused it. That was the only time it happened during the game. I had about 20+ players I was rotating between missions and all of a sudden I could not use any of them. Only the lower 10 were available to choose from.

Now that I know what I am doing I will ramp up the difficulty.

That's probably the "Low Profile" sitrep. It means you can only deploy sergeant and lower troopers.

I'm certainly not hardcore. The original X-com (as in the 90s) made me a save scummer and I have been one ever since. I just can't stand losing a squaddie. So this really has to do with a difference in how I play Xcom. I understand what you guys are saying, but I just could never play this way!

Ah, that makes some sense then. Kind of stupid. What's the explanation for that sit rep? Are they all in a meeting? Guess I missed that as I was playing.

There's another sitrep where you may only deploy three troops. I avoid that one like the plague.

Some other sitreps really crank up the difficulty too, like the one where lots of mechanical troops spawn.

Re: the "Tired" mechanic: One side effect of this feature is that combat wounds become less dramatic. Since your troops will be out of commission by default on tough missions, it doesn't matter much if they suffer a few wounds - they need to sleep anyway. Late game, when the Infirmary is built, recovering troops from will drain is a bigger challenge than healing from taking hits.

I think what would fix it for me is:

- Make it more transparent what exactly is causing loss of will, and make it somewhat preventable, for a cost
- Add a building to the game that increases Will restoration (upgrading the Bar? the Psionic chamber?) or make it so that you can heal will loss faster in the Infirmary.

Like baelthazar, I play this game for the pleasure of training an elite squad of guerilla fighters, and then cry when they inevitably die... The whole "army rotation" idea doesn't jive with me. If I'm forced to take a Corporal Specialist on a late game mission, it should be because I made some kind of mistake, not because the game forces me to.

IMO.

They made this game so easy to mod that I'm going all Daehawk on it. I think I've got like 20 different mods applied to the game right now. Mostly "bugfix" mods, a couple of cosmetic ones and map packs. Still.

Me too. On my second playthrough I am using a few mods to add difficulty (like the "Better Advent" mod) along with a few that give me small perks (like an extra inventory slot so I can start using some of the cool things you can build in the proving ground). I can't remember the last time I found a game I actually enjoyed playing as much as this one. I don't think I've ever put 100+ hours in a game, finished it, and then immediately started a new campaign.

I'd post more about how much I love the game but since that cuts into my playing time... :P

It really is a fantastic game. I've already got hundreds of hours into XCOM 2, and it only came out last year.

Spoiler:
Spoiler:
The new ending cinematic again hints at a Terror from the Deep sequel. I'm talking about when the Templars gaze out at the ocean and mutters that the war has only begun.

I can't seem to find that mod, would you provide a name or a link? Thanks!

It adds an extra utility slot and a slot for ammo.

Almost at the end of my first WOTC playthrough. I've got about 30 soldiers, and most are majors or colonels. Somebody said earlier that they didn't like having to spread the wealth among so many troops. I found I really like it. It creates more personal attachments than the old style of 7 or 8 main guys. The downside will be trying to pick the 6 lucky ones that get to go on the final mission.

I just lost a soldier for the first time in many game months last night. It was my own fault though. I shot at a new pod of 3 aliens with a concealed ranger before finishing off the last 2 units from another pod. Two of the new ones tag-teamed my 4th best (but personal favorite) sharpshooter. Her bondmate went berserk (literally) and killed one of the newly revealed aliens. I almost reloaded but then decided to let it be part of the story. A moment of silence for Arziki Miambo.

Steam says I've played 1,586 hours of the first game and 552 hours of XCOM 2! I love this game. :D
